Since I am starting late with my recs because of travel, I figured I would start with the shorter stories in the vain hope I will catch-up faster. Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: gen Author on LJ: tigsAuthor Website: Sarah's Story PageWhy this must be read: This is a funny, delightful entry in the weaponry challenge over at ds_flashfiction with the most perfectly matched title in existence. For reasons that don't need exploring Ray Kowalski and Ray Vecchio end up as partners after the series and in a confrontation Ray Kowalski throws his gun at a perp much to his horror and Vecchio's amusement. The story so deftly captures both Kowalski and Vecchio that I get beautiful, hilarious, technicolor, canon-esque visions of its events which is the best kind of gen short story in my opinion. As the icing on top, we see how Vecchio, because of his common background of both Chicago and Fraser, can commiserate (and mock) and help Kowalski work through his conflicting emotions at 'pulling a Fraser' which means we can see how these two could work together despite their rocky interactions in CotW. ( Because Chicago cops, see, they didn't throw their guns at perps in an attempt to—to disarm their assailants. )Gunslinger by Tigs

Fandom: ANDROMEDA Pairing: Dylan/Harper Author on LJ: viridian5Author Website: The Green Room Why this must be read: Time travel is extensively covered in Andromeda canon, but it doesn't crop up much in fanfic. In this story however, Dylan and Harper are thrown back in time to before the Fall. They land on Tarn-Vedra, centre of the Commonwealth and Dylan's homeworld. Viridian makes pre-Fall Tarn-Vedra come alive; she introduces well-rounded original characters and perfectly describes a civilisation complacent in its belief that it is the invincible centre of the universe. I found it fascinating that Harper thrives in this new environment, attending university and making friends (and enemies), while Dylan becomes withdrawn and depressed, unwilling to spend any time in a place where he once belonged. Fandom: THE WEST WING Pairing: Andi/Ainsley, Toby/Sam Author on LJ: don't know Author Website:Ashes of Old Lovers Why this must be read: This fic has Toby and Andi's marriage as a marriage of convience, but despite this still manages to show deep and genuine affection between them, it has Toby almost giving himself whiplash trying to keep tabs on Sam at at party and Andi making a pass at Ainsley to amuse herself and annoy Toby. Despite how easily a fic with this premise could have gone out of character, Suki manages to keep all the character voices true to the show. Andi looks back at Ainsley, leaning over to place her empty plate on the table and swinging her hair out of her eyes, and quickly decides on a course of action. "You would prefer I took your best friend CJ home with me, or maybe Ginger, your trusty, but off-limits, assistant?" She asks teasingly but with no smile.
"Andrea," he growls in warning.
"Exactly, so, I think I have been more than considerate of any possible discomfort you may feel at the thought of my having--"
"--Andi, can't you at least restrain yourself from hitting on White House staff?"
"Toby, I am hurt. Seriously, I would never do anything to make you feel uncomfortable in the least," she says, smiling softly and smoothing down his lapel with her fingers. She drains her wine and places the empty glass on a passing tray before grabbing two glasses of champagne. "I'll let Sam know you want him," she says with a wink and a smile as she walks purposely across the ballroom toward Ainsley, knowing Toby is rooted to the floor behind her watching her move, scowling and freaked, fearing she may actually say something to Sam.Inconvenient

Fandom: SGA Pairing: McKay/Sheppard, Weir/Zelenka Author on LJ: eleveninchesAuthor Website: That Boy Ain't Right (Fanfiction by eleveninches)Why this must be read:This story combines a homage to the humor and adventure plots of B-movies with the Atlantis characters, making a few slight twists along the way, such as Zelenka as the lead scientist. John is a botanist, skateboarder, and ex-environmental extremist who ends up partnering Rodney as they explore Atlantis, only to discover that someone is turning people into dinosaurs. The story's fast pacing, absurd situations and buddy-oriented rapid-fire dialog shine, making it a delight to read. ( excerpt ) The Roads Never Lead Where They're Supposed To Go

Fandom: ANDROMEDA Pairing: Tyr/Harper, Harper/other Author on LJ: none Author Website: Sienna's Slash fictionWhy this must be read: I'm recommending this because it hits my kinks. Big time. It's a pre-Andromeda story. Pre-Maru even, set before Harper met up with Beka and escaped to a better life. Harper's survival on Earth through prostitution is arguably canon, as one of the original writers, Zack Stenz, said this about Harper's past: A realistic "Harper growing up on Earth" prequel would probably be equal parts City of God, Salaam Bombay, and My Own Private Idaho. In the Kitchen was written before he said that, but I know a lot of us had been thinking it. Harper is young here, but he's still a survivor, doing what he has to do and making the most of it. Tyr is the Tyr was saw in season one, a mercenary, an assassin, a great cook... And there's blisteringly hot sex and spanking! Oh yes, it hits my kinks. ( Excerpt )In the Kitchen
