Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: Sam/Dean Author on LJ: esorlehcarAuthor Website: Supernatural fic on LJWhy this must be read: When it comes to Sam, Dean has always been a little selfless for his own good. Following the events of "Devil's Trap", Dean gets the two of them close enough to California to Sam to make it back to school on his own, leaves him a wad of money on the nightstand, and disappears. What follows is Dean crisscrossing the country without purpose or reason, too broken by desperation and need and good intentions gone awry to realize that Sam might be out there somewhere looking for him, unwilling to be left behind. There's an equally wonderful companion piece of their separation as told from Sam's point of view, Practical Men of the World. Stumbling Across Its Bleak Ending

Fandom: The Magnificent Seven Pairing: Ezra, Josiah friendship Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Helen's Fanfic PageWhy this must be read: A thoughtful story that gives us a peek into Ezra's character as he contemplates his life and relationship with the other men. When was the last time he had truly felt something more than amusement or pity for those other souls? How long had it been since he had opened his heart to anyone? Respect did not come readily from Ezra; it was a thing that needed to be earned. Likewise trust, affection and fellowship. Traits that he had found in shocking abundance when he met his six fellow peacekeepers. Traits he wished almost desperately for them to find within him. Stopover in a Place of Quiet Truth

Fandom: The Magnificent Seven Pairing: Chris/Vin/Buck Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Charlotte C HillWhy this must be read: Being in a threesome isn't easy. Sure, the sex is great, but even the dynamics of group sex takes a little work. In this story we get to see how Vin, Buck, and Chris deal with the challenges that arise when a third lover is added to an existing relationship, both in and out of bed. They were right for each other, and he felt it again, that warmth in his belly that could still scare him. He'd once thought that he might be a one-off for them, some kind of kinky thrill to spice up what was so obviously a long-term relationship. But he'd gotten past that, moved on to a point where he could admit to himself that he loved them, loved them both if in slightly different ways, and loved them both a lot.Keep On Keeping On

Fandom: Battlestar Galactica 2003 Pairing: Kara/Lee Author on LJ: romanticalgirlAuthor Website: A Multitude of VoicesWhy this must be read: One of the most interesting things about Battlestar Galactica, in my personal opinion, is the fact that there are 12 cylons. A, because it lets me know that Ron D. Moore had some basic plan from the onset, and B, because that way people can play with who those cylons will be. And there have been a lot of versions. I've seen quite a few "what if so and so was a cylon" fics in my time. Number Twelve is yet another version, wherein Zak Adama is number twelve, the final cylon, the last unidentified model. This isn't an outrageously original concept (because who better to disrupt the entire framework of Galactica than Zak Adama being a cylon?), but romanticgirl writes about Zak-the-cylon and his aftermath with such grace it makes your heart sink. Zak's dialogue is enough to give you shivers and make your stomach do a little dance. Check it out. Number Twelve

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Refs to Bob/Caroline, Buck/Bob Author on LJ: lozenger8Author Website:Why this must be read:Usually, fics containing Bob focus on his relationship with Benton and Buck rarely appears at all. But while Bob Fraser may be an ornery ghost and Sergeant Frobisher have a gas problem now, a few decades earlier they stood across a canyon and one of them made an impossible shot, winning the love of the woman they rescued. This is a great snapshot of an earlier time in the characters' lives. The choice of Buck's point of view to retell this canon referenced event works well. This fic captures the banter between Buck and Bob, and gives a good offscreen presence for Caroline. The humour of the story just edges the poignancy of knowing the canon fates of the characters. Fandom: THE WEST WING Pairing: Gen. Author on LJ: tinkerbell99Author Website: tinkerbell99Why this must be read: It's a humorous piece set during a campaign. The author has a real knack for writing the banter and dialogue as it would be on the show itself. She captures all of the characters well, especially Donna. It's incredibly funny. “My uncle-”
“The trucker?”
“-once sent him two dollars to pay for an autograph, and do you know what he did?”
“I would imagine I’m about to find out.”
“He sent it back. The money. He sent it back with a note that said friends don’t take money from friends.”
“Yet you take money from me all the time.”The Wheels on the Bus

Fandom: Veronica Mars Pairing: Duncan/Veronica Author on LJ: missambsAuthor Website: u-l.org Why this must be read:Set in Season One, this story explores what's going on in Duncan's head the first time he ran away. It's interesting, isn't it, that Duncan works so hard to get so far away, not once but twice. He's written Veronica Mars dozens of letters over the course of the year. He never could get up the courage to send them. In them, he would confess everything. He'd tell her the reason why he broke up with her, and how much it killed him, how much it still kills him. He'd tell her what that night meant to him, and how sad he is to be disturbed that he loved it. He'd tell her everything, he'd spill out his soul.Being Roberto

Fandom: DC COMICS (subfandom: Golden Age Batman) Pairing: Bruce Wayne (Batman)/Dick Grayson (Robin) Author on LJ: glossingAuthor Website: glossingsAuthor's warning: "Intergenerational content some most readers may find disturbing and (thankfully) *obsolete* social values that everyone should find disturbing. I'm not kidding about the Golden Age setting, okay?" Why this must be read: This is a Golden Age fic--that is to say, it's set in the forties and early fifties, in the earlier years of Batman's publication. ( glossing helpfully provides some scans of these old comics that inspired her.) This fic about who Batman and Robin might have been if they had existed and maintained a sexual relationship in the days of McCarthy--while simultaneously upholding anti-homosexual standards of the day. A difficult fic to write, and one which glossing, new to this particular fandom, manages splendidly, providing fascinating glimpses of the life in the gay bar Dick is (quite innocently) sent to infiltrate, and of Bruce's complicated strategies of denial that allow him to exclude his relationship with his ward from the condemned catagory. The style and the setting are Golden Age; Glossing's sensibility is modern, but seeks to understand and get within that of the times. The Pleasures of Civic Duty, part 1 and part 2.

Fandom: Veronica Mars Pairing: N/A Author on LJ: spike21Author Website: The Spike's Slash Pages Why this must be read:Set just after the finale of season one, this story takes a quick, intense trip through Logan's mind just as he's being surrounded on the bridge. Rough, intense, and truthful, this story makes a perfect movement between what we see in season one and what we're eventually given at the beginning of season two. It's one thing to take a beating, he'll explain to Weevil one day with a lead pipe in his hands, but from now on nobody touches him where he can feel it.
Nobody. Logan swears it, whispers it in blood to the last ground his mother ever walked on.
Nobody. Not ever again.Fealty
