Fandom: SMALLVILLE Pairing: Chloe/Lex Author on LJ: nindulgenceAuthor Website: memories on LJWhy this must be read:This story reminds me of a really good movie out of the Golden Age of Hollywood, like Chloe and Lex would be friends of Nick and Nora Charles, or something. Stylish, sexy, and smart -- both the characters and the story itself. It's cute, fun, and delightfully absent of the extraneous romantic stuff -- and dead on in a meta sort of way that still remains true to the characters and their universe. Best Laid Plans

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Skinner Author on LJ: dkwilliamsAuthor Website: Spiral Into Diana Williams' FictionWhy this must be read: This is a send-up of The Princess Bride recast with X-Files characters in the XF world, and it's very funny. ( more details )I guess you could say it's crack!fic, but it's a lot of fun. The Prince Bridegroom (It's the 4th story down on the page--I can't seem to link directly.)

Fandom: HOUSE Pairing: House/Wilson Author on LJ: apple_piAuthor Website: RPS Fiction by Apple PiWhy this must be read: It is a sad fact of House fan fiction that the good porn is scarce, and my recs so far have reflected this unfortunate situation. That's why when we have the good luck to come across a story that is both hot and in character like this one, that story simply must be read! What I like best about this fic is that House and Wilson behave like the grown men I see on the show. They don't say much outright, but there are lots of little gestures that reveal how deeply they feel for each other, how deeply they know one another. Don't miss it! And please don't forget to tell apple_pi how much you enjoyed it. Too Long at the Fair

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: None Author on LJ: indriAuthor Website: Blood and WeetabixWhy this must be read:I enjoy gen stories that explore dusty corners of fandom, or that elaborate on some aspect of canon. All those Slayers before Buffy, and we only got a glimpse of a few. The Chinese Slayer who Spike killed is the focus of this piece, and it's moving and evocative of another time and place. Foreign DevilsOther stories about Slayers of days gone by can be found here on history lesson, the site katemonkey created to showcase stories of past Slayers.

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: none; ensemble gen Author on LJ: inlovewithnightAuthor Website: Exaggeration and Blank VerseWhy this must be read:Engrossing story about Jayne and his family, both the one he came from and the one he's joined on Serenity. He gets called home to tend to family business and when he doesn't come back, Mal goes after him to make sure he's all right. I really liked the use of all the crewmembers here - everyone's in character, and the interactions between them all ring true - and I enjoyed the original characters, especially Jayne's sister, Charlie. I also liked this background for Jayne, and the insight into him this story gives. "My mama's dying," he said flatly, not breaking stride on his way to the door. "My brother wanted me to get myself home, if I was able. Have to tell him that I ain't." He turned the corner and they listened to the metallic ringing of his boots on the catwalk down to the cargo bay.
Mal went ahead and let himself curse then, trying to avoid the seven pairs of accusing eyes aimed his way. "Well, if he'd said that first of course I'd've told him he could go," he muttered, pushing his chair back. "I'm going to talk to him right now, quit looking at me like that..." The last was mostly for Kaylee and Inara, who between them had perfected the art of not saying a word and still making a man feel about six inches tall and ashamed of himself.Homestead by inlovewithnight* If you enjoy the story, please let the author know! *

Fandom: Horatio Hornblower Pairing: Horatio Hornblower/Barbara Wellesley, implied Horatio Hornblower/William Bush Author on LJ: black_houndAuthor Website: N/A Why this must be read: It's fic! It's artwork! It's a fic that is artwork! black_hound is one of the most -- if not the most -- gifted fan artist in the Hornblower fandom, and with this, she proves that she can write, too. A sharp turn of phrase, a fabulously atmospheric job on the illustrating end, and the result? A short, pointed piece exploring the gray areas that lie between Hornblower's Navy and civilian life. Fandom: RPS Pairing: Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum Author on LJ: hackthisAuthor Website: dysFUNctionalWhy this must be read:It's freaking hilarious. It's only marginally slash, but man the doubling over with laughter makes up for the lack of dirty sex. Hackthis's take on the boys is absurd, completely cracked out and probably the most real of all fic. Still The Prettiest in the Land
