12:34 pm Five Things That Never Happened to Luke Skywalker by Corana (PG)
Fandom: STAR WARS OT
Pairing: Gen (with a little Luke/Mara in the last one)
Length: 7,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rynne
Author Website: The Background Hum, Corana's Fanfiction.net Profile

Why this must be read:

Ever since it was first used as a fanfic challenge, the "five things that never happened" concept has become one of the most popular writing tools in fandom. I've read a few such Star Wars stories, but this is the best I've read thus far.

Corana uses the "five things" to great effect in Luke Skywalker's life. Each story is self-contained, but together they reveal interesting facets of Luke's character. In each incarnation, he is still the character we recognize despite his changed status, or even his changed name. Each AU is distinct from the others, but they all work as valid (and intriguing) possibilities. All of them are so good that one wishes the author would write full stories for each of them instead of the snippets with which we must be content.

Who knows? Maybe someday she'll expand a couple of these little AUs into full stories. We can only hope.

Why this must be read:

It's basic, I mean, what's not to love about a cracked out fic that contains boys playing a game called, "Things That Shouldn’t Taste Like Beef"??? There's some good voyeurism here, boys hilariously being boys, and searing hotness. This is beautifully written, moving from fun and punchy to sexy and intense to sweet and soft. Indeed if you aren't in this fandom already this one might be the one that convinces you.

Pairing: Gibbs/Female

Why this must be read: I started watching this show for Gibbs. I love the way he thinks. In this story we get to see something we rarely get to see on the show, even with all the season three flashbacks. This Gibbs is honest about what he wants and goes about getting it in a way that leaves hot behind and races towards spontaneous combustion in the best way.

Gibbs doesn't take the obvious bait and stands just in front of her, only his thumb moving, stroking her skin. "You're a public figure, Cindy." He rolls her name on his tongue. It tastes good; it tastes like too long since he's done this. "Gotta watch out for stalkers and the like."

Her laugh is warm and she tries to move closer to him; Gibbs doesn't let her, not yet. "So, how do you suggest I open my door, Jethro?" He smiles. It's even better when they play the game back.

08:59 pm Midnight by Blinkytreefrog (PG-13)
Fandom: DC COMICS (subfandom: Flash Rogues Gallery)
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] blinkytreefrog
Author Website: Blinky's Tree
Why this must be read: Nearly a year ago, [livejournal.com profile] blinkytreefrog, active proponent of DC's [livejournal.com profile] secondbananas, or lesser known characters, and of the Rogues' Gallery of the Flash in particular, organized a small ficathon for said Rogues' Gallery. This is her own entry.

It takes place toward the end of the last run of FLASH, when there were two branches of the known as Rogues--one a group of former villains led by Jesse James, the first Trickster, and working for the government, and the other, led by Len Snart, Captain Cold, sticking to criminal ways.

[livejournal.com profile] blinkytreefrog shows the inner workings of both teams, as each leader checks on his teammates during the night. Not a whole lot of action (well, aside from that incidental to some powerful, messed up people having nightmares!), but a great introduction to and interpretation of each Rogue and his or her nightmares, background, and relationship to the others.

Everyone is beautifully in character; Blinky makes the villainous (and formerly villainous) characters sympathetic without whitewashing them.

Go read it!

Fandom: STAR WARS PT
Pairing: Gen
Length: 1,700 words

Author Website: It's Not For You!

Why this must be read:

This short story shows Anakin and Obi-Wan at the beginning of Anakin's apprenticeship. Anakin is unsure of himself and of his place at the Jedi Temple. He thinks Obi-Wan could do much better than him for an apprentice, and Obi-Wan seems oblivious to Anakin's plight.

This story is unabashedly fluffy, but I enjoy such stories every once in a while. Star Wars Prequel stories naturally tend toward tragedy and angst, so it's nice to read a happy ending occasionally (although it is a bit bittersweet considering what happens later in our heroes' lives). Both Anakin and Obi-Wan are in character, with mentions made of Obi-Wan's tendency to lecture and Anakin's tendency to sulk. I especially found Anakin's characterization accurate for the nine- or ten-year-old he is in the story. (Some fans will also really like the author's gleeful little dig at a despised EU Marty Stu character.) Go, read, and give yourself a bit of a smile for the day.
