Why this must be read:

This story has many connections in my mind to two of my previous recs this month. Near the beginning of the month, I recced Trust Me, about a young Qui-Gon taking care of a sick Dooku, and my most recent rec was Somewhere I Belong, about a young Anakin's anxieties that he is not good enough for his new master.

This story shows a young Obi-Wan watching over an injured Qui-Gon during the wee hours of the night. He is fretting about how bad an apprentice he is when an unexpected visitor stops by. Obi-Wan tries to evade the stranger's notice without success. (Of course, it wouldn't be much a story if he had succeeded).

Even though he sleeps through the entire fic, Qui-Gon's presence permeates the story. He is the vital connection between Obi-Wan and Dooku, and he balances out their lives in many ways. The reader can easily see how his death would affect both Obi-Wan and Dooku in separate and profound ways. But this fic is not about Qui-Gon dying. It's about his importance to both his master and his apprentice. While he sleeps, they get a chance to chat a little, and their brief discussion reveals much about them both, and about Qui-Gon as well.

This is an enjoyable little story. The characterization is excellent, and the character voices are genuine. If you're a fan of Dooku, Qui-Gon, and/or Obi-Wan, you will especially enjoy this story.

Why this must be read:

Ok, this needs to be read because its just a mastery of language. The tension, the pacing, JC: just perfect. Each time I read this I get dragged completely into the sensuality of the story and can't stop until it's finished. I've reread the last passage so many times because I just want to get the feeling just right of what's happening. And it's of such a simple thing as Chris tutoring JC in scriptwriting...

Never mind that Chris is often cranky and will just as often scowl at JC's vaguely waving hands. Words, he always tells JC, we're working with actual words, here.

Why this must be read: It's hilarious! I rarely enjoy humorous stories in fanfic, for whatever reason, but this one is great. It's told in epistolary form, mostly notes to Mulder from a woman living in Mulder's apartment building and snippets from the residents' newsletter. Wombat does a great job of imagining how Mulder's neighbors might have reacted to all of the various shoot-outs, fights and anomalous incidents that occurred in their building, not to mention the late-night TV and basketball bouncing.

Why this must be read:

This is a Wilson's divorce story (technically AU given the late S2 canon), a common theme written with an uncommonly good House voice. With lines like ""Nice is just another way of saying unimaginative," it feels more like House is whispering his bitchery right in my ear than that I'm reading it on the screen. All the major characters make appearances in this fic, and they all ring true, but it's the killer House POV that really makes this fic a cut above.

Also, this story is structured around one of my favorite themes: jealousy. In the post divorce days House jumps to the conclusion that Wilson and Cameron are sleeping together. This notion drives him, completely, deliciously insane with envy and longing. I love it!

Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics

Why this must be read:

As some of you may have noticed, I adore Star Wars fics that explore the parent/child relationship or lack thereof in the Skywalker family. This fic accomplishes that exploration when the parent half of the equation is missing. In essence, the author asks a simple question: which of her biological parents does Leia take after? The answer should be obvious, and this fic supplies that answer in a unique way.

I find it fascinating that Luke is constantly compared to his father in the movies when it is his mother he truly resembles in personality. Likewise, though she inherited her mother's looks, Leia Organa's temperament and outlook on life are all Anakin. This very short story shows some of the ways in which Leia is very much her father's daughter. Highly recommended.
