09:36 am The Death of Arthur by Kindkit (PG)
Hi! I'll be reccing for X-men fandom this month. I'm going to start out with some of my favorite X3-inspired fics, then move on to comicverse stories, and some movieverse "classics."

Fandom: XMEN MOVIEVERSE
Pairing: Gen, Charles/Erik as background
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kindkit
Author Website: elysium
Why this must be read:

One of the things that fascinates me about comic-based fandoms is how frequently -- and often easily -- characters slip between identities and, sometimes, entire lives. In The Death of Arthur, [livejournal.com profile] kindkit explores the many transformations of the man who (sometimes) calls himself Magneto. Using changing names as a unifying metaphor, this story empasizes that such metamorphoses are far from easy; instead, they shake a character's sense of identity to the core. This story also takes advantage of the movie's location, building on a few images in the film to create a sense of San Francisco that feels lived-in and real.

Excerpt (spoiler-warning for X3, if that's still needed): Invisibility doesn't need a mutation )

07:49 pm Marshmallows in Jell-O by The Whole Brain (PG-13)
Subject: Marshmallows in Jell-O (PG-13)

Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: n/a
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] themonkeycabal and [livejournal.com profile] somedaybitch
Author Website: Red's Place
Why this must be read:

This was the first fanfic teleplay I had ever read. It was a format that I didn't know existed and one that blew me away. This is a Farscape script. This is something that could be shot and put on television. It's a fast story told in two parts. Taking place in late S3 between "Fractures" and "I-Yensch, You-Yensch", it's this group of folks at some of their most gloriously screwed-up. And it has pirates in it. Seriously, how can you go wrong with a story that has PIRATES! Also, there is a kick ass scene near the end of part one with John and Chiana that just makes me smile.

Seriously, go read.

08:27 pm Inversus by LoneGunGuy (PG)
Hi. I'll be reccing XF stories for September. I thought this would be easy, since so many excellent stories have been recommended already and there wouldn't be much left to choose from. Boy, was I wrong. Whittling my list of choices down was really difficult. This month's recs will be a mix of gen and het, casefiles and short stories. I hope you'll enjoy them.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: NA (Mulder & Scully do the work partner thing here)
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: No current one that I can find

Why this must be read: Inversus was written for a Virtual Season 8 project, so takes the familiar form of an XF episode. It's a tightly written case file (one of the best XF fic casefiles out there, in fact), with an intriguing central mystery, a memorable victim/villain, some startling, surreal imagery and Mulder and Scully written as the intelligent sleuths they are.

A brief excerpt, and a hook if there ever was one... )

09:18 pm Take As Directed by Jennamajig (PG)
Fandom: HOUSE MD
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jennamajig
Author Website: Stories by Jennamajig
Why this must be read: Because it deals with a subject the show has brought up a number of times - House's Vicodin usage and dependence - in a realistic way that doesn't slip into a maudlin or angsty tone. There's a lot of emotional honesty in the piece: it keeps House recognizable both as who he is and who he was. Moreover, House's pain and medication are rarely the primary subject of such long works, and when they are, said works are rarely this well researched.

09:52 pm Skip Trace: Fractured by Charlotte C Hill with Maygra and Megan Kent (PG-13)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN ~ Modern Day AU
Pairing: Chris/Buck
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] charlottechill
Author Website: The World In Fiction by Charlotte C Hill
Why this must be read:

Fractured is the launching pad for the Skip Trace universe but it stands on its own as a thoughtful and very moving study of exactly how two men fall in love. It does not mumble over or flinch away from the fact that Chris was in a loving marriage or that Buck thoroughly enjoys women - plural. It begins a breath after Chris loses Sarah and Adam to a car explosion with Buck stepping seamlessly in to protect Chris from the press and then later on from himself. Charlotte does not rush Chris and Buck through their long journey but instead gives them day to day detail with no crashing revelations until all involved are at the inevitable conclusion.
