01:53 am Pirate Arcana by Gloria Mundi (PG-13)
Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: "none really, but mention of triangles, squares and pyramids"
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] viva_gloria
Author Website: none, for the moment
Why this must be read:

Some works beggar description. This is one of them. Gloria Mundi combines the tarot and Pirates to give us a stunning version of the major arcana. Twenty-two carefully chosen images (spoilers for Dead Man's Chest), each with its own sharp and insightful drabble. Together they do a fabulous job of making one think about the characters in ways that are quintessentially Gloria Mundi and beautifully in sync with the movie. It's just. *waves hands*. It's that good.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Gen story
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: Mele's Fanfic This is a multi-author site.
Why this must be read:

I usually devour slash, but I enjoy this gen story, an AU on a shape-changing theme, which is what you get in a fandom with canon animal spirit guides. Fine old TS themes of trust between our guys are given an enthusiastically angsty airing in a tale combining horror and case-story elements. One caveat if you insist on clean text; this longish story has a few proof-reading errors, but don’t let it stop you. Also, the author gives an R rating, but this hardened horror buff is more inclined to suggest PG13.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Implied Rose/Doctor
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] loneraven
Author Website: Sleeping With Ghosts
Why this must be read:

Ah, the fic that spawned an entire community of even more excellent fics. Technically, it's an AU, but it's a really, really good one, despite its length (or lack thereof); the ending alone makes it worth reading. (And, yes, there is femmeslash. That helps.)

08:22 pm Precious Things by the_green_sheep (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: according to the author?  None. (Well, Gibbs/DiNozzo, but in Extra-Squinty-Vision.)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] the_green_sheep
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Tony thinks Gibbs will pay any price to catch Ari.  He's wrong.

The chase lasts five corners and less than three minutes, but in Tony’s head it melts into slow motion and stretches, three minutes, three hours, three hundred nights spent running down leads instead of going home to sleep. It’s been ten months, and Tony still finds himself rubbing his face as if the skin was getting itchy from flecks of drying blood.

08:24 pm Not The Reel Nsync by No pSeud Attached (PG13ish)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Lance/OMCs, Lance/JC, Joey/Kelly, Justin/Cameron
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nopseud
Author Website: nO PsEUD aTTACHED - a pOPSLASH fICTION aRCHIVE

Why this must be read: Because it's the funniest thing to have been written in the fandom in a long time. Because the story of how Chris, Lance, and Joey started dubbing gay porn in Chris' basement studio just for the fun of it, roping in (a very eager and willling) JC along the way, the subsequent feud with Justin, and what the final outcome was is absolutely brilliant and not to be missed by anyone who loves popslash and Nsync. In addition to being totally hilarious it's wonderfully written, has some lovely subtle characterisations - JC and Kelly comes especially to mind, and it's long. Seriously, I can find nothing wrong with this story. If you haven't read it yet you should run and do so at once!

Hi, I'm Lin, and I'll be your driver for The West Wing this month. Apologies for the late start, I've been away from my computer. Hopefully I can make up for it now. Enjoy.

Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: CJ/Tabatha Fortis (with a side of CJ/Toby and Toby/Tabatha)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] littleloonlost
Author Website: no frills
Why this must be read:

It's hard to know what to say about this fic, really. [livejournal.com profile] littleloonlost dips artfully into moments from relationships, past and present, with a beautifully poetic style, and then ties them up with a bow. Her CJ is perfect, and moving. Her Toby is, well, Toby. If only we could have seen this Tabatha on the show.

11:11 pm Words are Flying out like Endless Rain into a Paper Cup by Doyle (R)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Oz/Devon
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4
Author Website: exitseraphim.net
Why this must be read:

I had real trouble deciding which of Doyle's excellent fics to rec but I ended up going with this because not only does it have a great premise and fantastic Oz characterisation, it has an ending that will simply knock you down cold.

Place like this doesn’t even warrant a backstage, so he sits at the bar and waits for the band to come out front. Oz can get by in a dozen languages, say hi and order drinks in fifteen more. Half the bottles behind the bar are mineral water. Oz can say ‘no thank you, I don’t want any drugs’ in eight major European languages, ‘I’m looking to score’ in twelve. He orders a coke, drinks it slowly.

Devon, when he spots him past the groupies, gives him a sloppy hug that staggers them both backwards like drunken dancers, pissing off the guy behind Oz. They ignore the pissy German and Devon says, “Where the hell’d you go, man? Been like two years.”

“Yet your math’s as stellar as ever.” Sixth grade math, Ms. Michaels’ class, Devon cheating from his homework. If a werewolf leaves California going East at sixty miles per hour and a musician stays in Sunnydale till it’s a hole in the ground and then goes all over at a hundred miles per hour, where will they meet? Five years later, a shitty club in the Reeperbahn, and Ms. Michaels gives them twin gold stars.

11:36 pm If You've A Ready Mind by Maya (R)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter (Draco/Cho Chang, Draco/Terry Boot)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mistful
Author Website: Lasair and Maya's Fanfiction and Ramblings
Why this must be read:

This is a long, captivating story with a simple premise: What if Draco Malfoy had been Sorted into Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin? Draco's personality doesn't change in his new House, though Maya's Draco is generally more aristocratic and less snot-nosed brat than the Draco from the books. The concept is great. It starts with the Sorting in first year and goes through the end of sixth year. Some events stay the same, but some are altered by this one change to the story, and the shifted alliances that occur because of it. I love the whole cast of characters here. The story is primarily Draco/Harry, though over the course of six years in school, Draco has other relationships. But even if Draco can't, or won't, admit it to himself, all of these relationships somehow lead back to his obsession with Harry Potter. It's great fun.
