12:38 pm The Young Gentleman by Nautacarus (PG-13)
Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Edward Pellew/William Bush
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] nautacarus
Author Website: Author's LJ Memories
Why this must be read:

This is a unique piece of fic. Not only for the early setting -- 1787 -- but for the meeting of Captain Pellew with William Bush in his midshipman years. The characterization of both Bush and Pellew is adroit. Much said in a small space. The author knows what she is about, and has given us a completely believeable and beautifully written story about how William Bush came to be a lieutenant, and the man who made it possible.

He will make sailors of the midshipmen, he will make a gentleman of himself, and you will make officers of them all.

04:29 pm The Peerless Patience of Obi-Wan Kenobi by Ladyjaida (R)
Fandom: STAR WARS PT
Pairing: Obi-Wan Kenobi/Qui-Gon Jinn
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ladyjaida
Author Website: Author's LJ Memories
Why this must be read:

One of the most lyrical extrapolations of canon I have ever read, the writer's prose vibrates and rolls off the page. Jaida pieces together Obi-Wan's perspective on loss, waiting, and what exactly can be held onto over time.

Obi-Wan was rather of the mind that he wasn't capable of inflicting change on his master no matter how quiet and small it was. In fact, Obi-Wan had come to learn, the quieter and smaller the change, the more important it proved. He'd thought about it until he'd wrapped it into knots while it knotted him. It was all internal and personal, Obi-Wan seventeen and a world of changing and buffeted about and testing himself too in order to find his own decisive unflinching core. It was Obi-Wan changing again.

04:35 pm Disorderly Conduct by Calicokat (R)
Fandom: STAR WARS PT
Pairing: Anakin Skywalker/Chancellor Palpatine
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] calicokat
Author Website: Author's LJ Memories
Why this must be read:

Fans have often discerned a possible (and disturbing) sexual undertone between Anakin and the much older mentor figure of Palpatine in The Revenge of the Sith. The ambivalent nature of any abuse Anakin has suffered adds to the relevance of this idea. This pairing is unusual, but the underlying motives between the characters piques the imagination. It is NOT explicit, but the premise is highly intriguing: what would Anakin, as a self-interested teenager, do in order to bring about what he wanted in his relationship with Palpatine? This is a convincing glimpse of exactly how much Anakin has pursued his own path to the dark side.

06:48 pm Eyes Wide by Tamarak (PG-13)
Fandom: HOUSE
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read: Because it's really nice to come away from a story that fills your mind up and makes you think. The momentum in it is fabulous, as is the realism. Tamarak is wonderful for showing House doing what he does best, which is being a doctor, as well as another role he's exceptionally skilled at, which is being a teacher. The readers are also allowed a visit inside his head, which is a fascinating place to go.

"If you think in terms of seconds, you have a lot more time than you think you do when you call a code. Three minutes, that's 180 seconds. You can do a lot in that time. You want to make sure you do it right, and you do that by thinking about what's happening and why."
