Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Ray Vecchio/Ray Kowalski Author on LJ: akiteAuthor Website: Tales of A. KiteWhy this must be read:This series is just a bit angsty and is definitely testosterone driven at times, but in a good way. I like the progression the relationship between the Rays takes, and I buy this dynamic of Vecchio pushing Kowalski until he can't take it any more and does something to stop it. Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE Pairing: Scott/Jean, Scott/Emma Author on LJ: xenokattzAuthor Website: Katt's AerieWhy this must be read:In honor of the new Astonishing X-Men coming out today, I wanted to rec a story about Scott Summers (Cyclops), set during the current AXM arc. This is a dream story and, while it's vaguely spoilery for recent events, it mostly deals with Scott's development over years of canon. We see Scott/Jean and hints of Scott/Emma, and also some nice brotherly bits about Scott and Alex (Havok). xenokattz does an exceptional job of conveying Scott's inner conflict, signaled by parenthetical asides where he argues with his own dreams. (Is it just me or does inner-Scott sound suspiciously like Logan?) ( Excerpt: Bobby can't even spell 'beatifically' )Read the rest here: Riding Horses, or, Five Things that Should Never Happen to Scott Summers.

Fandom: HOUSE Pairing: House/Wilson Author on LJ: copperbadgeAuthor Website: Author's tagsWhy this must be read: Long stories are good. Funny stories are good. Long and funny stories are almost never written, and when they are, they should be shared and celebrated. There are a few in this fandom that are already in the memories to this community and I thought I should add this one to the list. Reading this is genuinely delightful for many reasons, but the best one is quite possibly that the author managed to capture House's and everyone else's voices beautifully, and if you do that you're guaranteed to get at least one laugh. Here's one of the better ones: He waited for Cuddy to start talking.
Three.
Two.
One.
"All right, I think we can -- "
"Let me be clear about this," House said. Interrupting Cuddy was a joke that never got old. "We are very busy and important doctors and have lots of life-saving to do of people who aren't stupid enough to crash their SUVs full of children and potentially puppies into a tree. You get one question each, which should be a nice challenge for you. My name is Doctor Gregory House, I'm a diagnostician, that means I tell people what's wrong with them, which is the best job ever. That's Doctor James Wilson, he does something with cancer, I've never really asked."Synchronicity

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairings: Vecchio/Kowalski; Fraser/Kowalski Author on LJ: china_shopAuthor Website: china_shop's fanfic/slash indexWhy this must be read:This one hurts, but it's worth the pain. Love triangles aren't dealt with easily when there's genuine feeling, and here Kowalski faces the hardest choice: past love or new love. It's possible to love two people, but in the real world, unlike fanfic, polyamory isn't always an option. This Here Now

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: DiNozzo/McGee, with a bit of DiNozzo/OFC/McGee Author on LJ: meadowlion Author Website: livejournal memoriesWhy this must be read:Tim wants something he doesn't think he can have. That doesn't stop him from trying. Her name is Cindy, or maybe Cindi or Candy, for all Tim can remember. What he knows is that she looks like a Barbie doll, she probably tastes like the sugary wax lips that used to get stuck in his braces at Halloween, and she's blocking his view. That's been the case the whole night, but he won't hold it against her. She can't help being what Tony wants, and Tim isn't blind enough not to want her a little, too. The Things You Do

Fandom: POPSLASH Pairing: Justin/Lance, Justin/Britney, AJ/Lance Author on LJ: not that I know Author Website: popslash by kisaWhy this must be read: Because long AJ/Lance stories are incredibly rare, and good long stories even rarer. Because it's a quiet and understated story about the end of one relationship and the beginning of another, without over-the-top angst or excessive emotional wallowing. That said this story does have a couple of problems that might put some readers off. One is the rather idiosyncrathic punctuation, and the other is the strange way the text is broken up into paragraphs. To me these two things are however easily outweighed by the quality of the story itself. ( Excerpt )Something Come Undone

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski Author on LJ: cimmeriansAuthor Website: Stories by AristideWhy this must be read:Aristide had me captive to the wonderful lunacy (so much like canon) at the bologna sandwich bit. Fraser is driving Ray crazy, and it's laugh-out-loud fun to see events unfold. The dialog is brilliant, and the whole story made me go to that fannish happy place. I'll be re-reading this one whenever I am in a bad mood. (Bonus for Turnbull fans: he's got a wacky feature role.) Foreign Territory Part 1Part 2Part 3

Fandom: THE WEST WING Pairing: CJ/Toby Author on LJ: lifeasanamazonAuthor's Website Wishful ThinkingWhy this must be read:There didn't turn out to be as much post-ep fic for 'Here Today' (7x05) as I was expecting, which is why I'm so glad lifeasanamazon wrote this piece. It's not very long, but it's moving, and harsh, and CJ and Toby the way they probably really are, even if we wish they weren't. The Comfortless Tragedy of Isolated Hearts

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Dawn/Kennedy, Willow/Faith Author on LJ: thelastgoodnameAuthor Website: A million possible universesWhy this must be read:Because it's a great and unique way of looking at the development of a relationship, and because it's got some lovely dialogue and character moments sprinkled throughout. However, before they could be served -- two spaghettis with meatballs, one lasagna, and one pizza with the works -- seven demon ninjas dropped in from the skylight above the waiting area.
Buffy hesitated for a single instant. It was just long enough for Dawn to say, "If Faith were here."
Both Kennedy and Buffy immediately leaped up and, using a few broken chair legs, a set of steak knives, and the cash register, disposed of six of the ninjas. The seventh ran away.
When the dust had cleared, Buffy and Kennedy glanced around at the other diners. Everyone was looking at them; Buffy opened her mouth to deflect suspicion."
"Those were... gang on PCP?"
The stares continued.

Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully (of a sort) Author on LJ: brighidestoneAuthor Website: No current X-Files-related one that I can find Why this must be read: From the Author's note: Lee B. challenged people to write something where loss of control was a bad thing for Scully, instead of the more accepted 'good thing'. I doubt this is exactly what was wanted, but it's what came. For me, as a reader, "what came" is one of the most memorable stories I've ever read. Short, but packs quite a punch. Tonight I Was by BrighidThere are also two sequels to the story: To the Bone, Part 1To the Bone, Part 2Atrocities Done, Part 1Atrocities Done, Part 2
