Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Ginny Weasley (Hermione/Ron, brief Ginny/Harry)

Why this must be read:

I'll be honest, there are some mechanical errors in this one, but the story - oh, the story! It's like the best chick lit you've ever read, but it's Harry Potter and it works! Ginny's life is perfect: she's the editor of Witch Weekly and she's dating Harry Potter, she's on top of the world. That is until Harry decides to call things off (don't worry Harry enthusiasts, he's not a bad guy here) and Draco Malfoy, once presumed dead, takes over control of the magazine. Now Ginny's life has turned upside down, and it doesn't help that as she's trying to pick up the shattered pieces she has to deal with her crazy family, finding a new place to live, increasing sales of the magazine and her totally inconvenient crush on her new boss. Ginny here is a cross between Bridget Jones, Elizabeth Bennett and Elizabeth Swann. It's fun, it's light, it's got killer one-liners and everything works out okay in the end.

Why this must be read:

A college friend with an unrequited crush on Sarah wishes himself to the labyrinth, and Sarah barters her dreams to face it again to get him back out. It's full of fascinating original Underground characters, interesting contemporary characters, and includes an explanation of Jareth's pendant which utterly slayed me. There's also an epilogue (which leads into a sequel), but for me, the story stands just fine alone without the sequel or the epilogue. Set aside plenty of time to read this one, though... it's a wonderful long adventure.

"Children were extremely precious then, especially boy-children. There were black markets, slave trains. The greatest fear of a man's heart was coming home one day to find his sons had never returned home that evening, or that they would disappear from their beds in the middle of the night."

"Which is where the goblins come in," Brian said slowly, beginning to understand. The man nodded, once.

"Magical creatures with no other joy but to snatch those precious darlings from their wee little beds," he said softly, "In order to create more of their own." He shrugged elegantly. "An easy explanation, one for an all too common mystery."

Brian frowned. "But the king," he said hesitantly, "Why isn't he a goblin?"

"Aha." The man raised one finger. "You are quick. Goblins for the boys, a king..."

"For the girls," Brian finished in an admiring tone. "Damn."

"A king to seduce their daughters, to steal their hearts and bodies away from the home. Wives, too." The man sighed and let his hands drop, relaxing further into his seat. "The shape of the legends change, of course, as the world does. But belief is an amazingly powerful thing. And at the core, the stories are all the same."

Why this must be read: I'd rec this for no other reason than the fact that my own mother also makes flourless tortes at Pesach, and it made me incredibly happy to see people get the little details right. But there's more to this than just that. It's tricky to write a story using a common premise that's different from the rest. Wilson finding out his missing brother is dead is one of widespread ideas, and this is one of the finer takes on it I've seen. It's sad without being angsty, written with unassuming and careful prose, and handles Wilson's complexities and friendship with House in a wonderful way.

Why this must be read:

Terra Firma was the one S4 ep that generated one of the highest amounts of fanfic. There was much speculating and filling-in-the-blanks by the fandom, but rarely do we get to see this kind of character rationale. This is the John Crichton we all know and love/hate. This is the man who, at this point and time, has to make a very hard choice and finds out it's much easier than he thought.

Why this must be read:

This story has an interesting premise. It's twelve years after Harry and co. have graduated from Hogwarts. Harry has become a professor and Draco is a single parent with three children. When one of his children has some problems adjusting at school, Harry and Draco are forced to interact with each other. At first it's sparks and anger, but they're both older and more mature in this story, and eventually they become friends for the sake of the children. Their relationship evolves at a nice pace, and there's also a background plot that's compelling about the psychological reprecussions of the war on Harry. This story features a kinder, gentler Draco. On one hand, it seems sort of OOC, but on the other, it also reads like a plausible response a dozen years down the line to the hardships that Draco's been dealt. This is a great, long story with well-rounded characters, including one of Draco's children who is a little too influenced by his grandfather's teachings.
