Fandom: ANDROMEDA Pairing: Harper/Eureka Maru Author on LJ: grey_bardAuthor Website: http://www.belladonna.org/GreyBard/gbindex.html Why this must be read:There are a couple of stories that feature Harper having intimate relations via dataport with either the Eureka Maru or The Andromeda Ascendant (our Boy is a cyberpunk, if you'll recall.) I like this one because it's fun, playful, and disturbingly hot. High Maintenance - Mood: amused

Fandom: ANDROMEDA Pairing: Harper/Tyr Author on LJ: toscas_kissAuthor Website: http://www.toscaskiss.net/ Why this must be read:Harper explores possible endearments and nicknames for Tyr, Tyr is disgusted, and the peanut gallery is amused. This fic ranks pretty high on the "cute and funny" meter, and is a must-read for those who like cute, in character humor. Babe - Mood: amused

Fandom: ANDROMEDA Pairing: Brendan Lahey, character studyAuthor on LJ: fandomfrom3Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=fandomfrom3 Why this must be read:This is a new story for the fandom, and its about Brendan, Harper's cousin, and it takes place in, around and after Bunker Hill. The format of the story is in single sentence "chapters" and is non-linear. The writer has an excellent handle on the constraints of this format and each sentence pulls you deeper into the over all story. Brendan is a freedom fighter who realizes that he's also a terrorist--but he can't stop fighting, any way he can. Part of the Fire - Mood: amused

Fandom: Popslash Pairing: Justin/JC Author on LJ: addictedkittenAuthor Website: addictedWhy this must be read: In one word? ClonesInLove. In many words? Ohhhhh, where do I even start? The story loosely borrows the premise of The Island and turns it into a wickedly funny, hot, and ultimately sweet story of love not being as complicated as everyone wants to pretend it is. It takes a deft, deft touch to pull off something like this, even before the pop culture references start zinging in, everything from Jon Stewart to Paris Hilton to Lindsay Lohan, and Sara just nails it. I'd quote, but honestly? I'd end up copying and pasting the whole thing. Famous People You Can Live Through

Fandom: Doctor Who Pairing: Mild Susan/David Campbell Author on LJ: cadhlaAuthor Website: Author's tagged ficsWhy this must be read:Because Old School characters need love, too. For a character that has caused so much debate, fandom-wise, and who essentially started off the companion tradition, there is surprisingly little fic focused on Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter. She tends to be a character who is written about in terms of her importance of others, on how she effects them rather than as a character in her own right. This beautiful fic here is focused around Susan, about who she is, about identity and home. It's utterly gorgeous and oh so very sad. Because for all the dodgy stories, and characterisation and even acting at times, Susan has always been a fascinating individual to me, who loved and was loved. And it's wonderful to see a fic that makes her so real. ( Excerpt )Five Moments In a Life That Never Was

Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: Carter Wellan/Haresh Clay Author on LJ: devilcAuthor Website: The Speculations of DevilChildWhy this must be read: So many characters in Highlander make a brief appearance and a lasting impression. With some, we're fortunate enough to have a bit of backstory via flashbacks. With others, their history must be inferred or invented. The writers of the DVD snippets, supposedly from Watcher records, had their own fun with the characters. We have ours. Haresh Clay, from West Africa, and Carter Wellan, from England, are companions who rode side by side for 900 years. In this sensuous short glimpse, DevilChild paints a picture of their coming together. Hayloft

Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: Methos/OFC Author on LJ: keerawaAuthor Website: N/A Why this must be read: Keera writes beautifully, touchingly. As a reader, you can trust her storytelling. Olive Branch is a memory, a flashback to a violent disruption in Methos's life. The setting is an olive grove owned by a Sephardic family in Iberia, a family into which Methos, as Aaron, has married. In his emotions and reactions, Keera draws out the levels of Methos's experience in sorrow and ultimately sweetness. ( a taste )Olive Branch

Fandom: GOOD OMENS Pairing: Crowley/Aziraphale Author on LJ: penknifeAuthor Website: Penknife to PaperWhy this must be read:Penknife is best known for writing [wonderful] stories in fandoms other than Good Omens, but multi-fandom challenges like yuletide can be very tempting (Hmm. Almost as if Crowley had something to do with it....) "Comfort and Joy" is a charming tale, set just before Christmas, in which both Demon and Angel are getting into the holiday spirit, each in his own particular way. Aziraphale likes "...standing around chatting with people and looking in windows and admiring the holiday decorations...." And Crowley? He likes shopping ("... it was great for inspiring greed, envy, and, around the holiday season, the occasional fit of out-and-out homicidal mania.") and sees no reason to believe "it's the thought that counts"... ...until Aziraphale steps in to teach a little seasonal lesson to his counterpart. Hi, I'm Cat and I'll be reccing Pirates of the Caribbean this month. I've recced Pirates here before, but not in quite a while and I'm looking forward to getting back into it with some post-DMC recs. I read a little bit of everything in PotC and pretty much any pairing, but lately it's been more gen and character-centric stories that have been catching my fancy, so that's what I'll mostly be reccing this month. I'm starting out with a couple great character studies from the recent Norrington ficathon. Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean Pairing: none Author on LJ: tenshinyaAuthor Website: none Why this must be read:Five glimpses into the heart of James Norrington, five snapshots of time, each illuminating another aspect of his character, and his fall from grace. The Norrington we meet in Dead Man's Chest is almost a different man from the one we last saw in Curse of the Black Pearl, but as tenshinya lays it out, it's easy to see how one became the other, how the character traits the raised him up and allowed him to become the proud, accomplished Commodore are the very ones that brought him low again. Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean Pairing: none Author on LJ: winter_babyAuthor Website: none Why this must be read:Another take on Norrington during Dead Man's Chest. Woven through the narrative of DMC, this series of interconnected scenes illuminates both Norrington's emotional state during the movie and his motivations for his actions. It's a deft piece of writing, tight prose and sharp, precise scenes that integrate perfectly into the flow of the movie, both feeding off of and complementing the source material in the way the best fanfic does. Fandom: STARGATE SG1 Pairing: Jack/Baal Author on LJ: maracelesAuthor Website: Lex DominationWhy this must be read:Because it's Jack/Baal that works, and even in the Stargate universe, where the characters can almost rival cats for their number of lives, it shouldn't be possible to get over the whole 'tortured to death multiple times' thing. And they don't, not really. But it does work. The initial throwing-together has them almost relying on each other but the rivalry between the two remains, along with the violence and the threats - Baal is still a god and Jack still hates the Goa'uld - but there grows an underlying respect, almost in spite of themselves. And with Jack never one to keep his mouth shut and Baal one smooth-talking parasite the author captures their banter really well. 'Wrong' deals with Jack and Baal captured and its sequel continues with them both free and on opposite sides. ( Excerpt )Wrong, and sequel Conflict of Interest
