Pairing: Cally/Chief

Author Website: fanfiction
Why this must be read: For a pairing that has since become canon, the lack of good fic focusing on it is a definite shame. Thankfully, SentraAquila fills the void here with a beautiful piece that shows an evolution of Cally and the Chief's relationship. With lovely writing, characterisations, and flow -- this fic is one to keep and reread. (Plus, hand!kink! HEE!)

Why this must be read:

An engaging story about sexuality, the identity and conformity of, This Is Not The Love Scene follows Justin as he lives out his own movie:
If Justin's life were a movie, one of those obnoxious movies marketed at the 18-to-27 crowd but really watched by middle school kids, the first time he'd seen JC would have played out [...] )

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: gen; Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, OCs
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: The Mysterious Planet

Why this must be read: A gorgeously long, plotty genfic with the Ninth Doctor, this reads like an episode of the series in all the right ways. Rose and the Doctor arrive in San Francisco in May 1960, at the height of the Cold War, and get tangled up with the House Un-American Activities Committee, conspiracies, atom bomb threats, and good old-fashioned human drama - families, friends, the good and the bad mixed up perfectly. The writing is very strong, the historical details are well-researched, the OCs are all well-drawn and feel like the regular sorts of new characters you meet in an episode, and the Doctor and Rose both get to play strong roles and have lots of plot. Really satisfying.

Why this must be read:

In honor of Robert Vaughn's birthday today, here's a delightful and insightful Napoleon-centric story. At first glance a disabled travel agent and an international spy have nothing in common, but appearances can be deceiving, in more ways than one. An evening on the town proves they are more similar than either could have imagined. Their encounter proves something else, too – that there's more than one kind of steel, and it can define people in tangible and intangible ways.

The characterizations in this story are terrific: Emily is an intriguing, vivid person in her own right and Napoleon is revealed as an incredibly complex individual. Even the minor characters shine as distinct personalities.

There are adult situations in this story, so although the label says gen, it is still for mature readers. It's a terrific read, chock full of insight into people in general, and one specific man in particular.

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do.

Pairing: Napoleon/Illya

Why this must be read:

This is, plain and simple, a Feel Good story. This is one I turn to when I am in need of comfort. The perfect read for a day when we offer thanks for what we have.

A random encounter in a shabby neighborhood brings out what Napoleon calls "the white knight" in Illya and sparks a small mystery for Napoleon. Where is Illya's coat and why does he leave Napoleon's cozy bed to go shopping? What do an Oxford biochemist, a heroine of the Great Patriotic War and a life of Thoreau-like simplicity have to do with a Thrush stakeout? All it takes is one small act of compassion to tie them all together.

Napoleon and Illya are happily, securely together in this story, no relationship angst, always a big plus for me. Also, Kellie has created memorable characters in Masha and Joe, noble human beings tangled in an uncomfortable web of administrivia and legalities.

A beautiful story about nobility, character, pride and compassion, about what is and isn't important in life; a fabulous, guaranteed-to-make-you-happy reading experience. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I do.
