Note: Rating provided by reccer; oh, and apologies for before on accidentally double reccing. I honestly believe I haven't done that again. *ducks head* Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: N/A; Gen; Jayne, River, Kaylee Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read: This story is very good at capturing Jayne's seeming contradictions of nature: his gruffness; his rough, crude nature; his soft spot for Kaylee and River; and his devotion(love) for his mother. It is also a very good look at the two girls and their relationship with Jayne. There is some lovely humor in this piece, and it is over-all a true and touching picture of these three characters. Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: Billy (references to various pairings) Author on LJ: alocalbandAuthor Website: Idea no. 8Why this must be read: When I was looking for recs to make this month, I almost couldn't believe that this story hadn't been rec'd before. Not only is the writing excellent, but the characterisations are simply gorgeous. For anyone who wants to know who Billy is -- this story will tell you. ( excerpt )Blind, Deaf and Dumb

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: Kara/Lee Author on LJ: leda13Author Website: n/a Why this must be read: Leda's been rec'd a few times here already, and it's always for a very good reason. In this story, not only is there clear, precise writing and characterisations, but there's also a sense of breathless anticipation that builds at just the right pace, and ends with one of the best final lines I've read to date. Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: gen; Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Jo Grant, Sergeant Benton Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: A Teaspoon and an Open Mind profileWhy this must be read: There's not nearly enough UNIT fic to satisfy me, but this lovely piece does a great job of filling in some of the gaps. Learning to live without the Doctor is something particularly relevant given how the new series has portrayed departures, and here we get at that carefully and gently, through an investigation of a haunted house and an examination of what it's like to be the ones left behind, doing the paperwork, picking up the pieces, and waiting and wondering. All the voices are dead-on, especially the Brigadier's, and it's subtle and touching and funny, without ever being sentimental or cloying. Still Waiting

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT Pairings: Assorted, including, but not limited to, Casey/Dana, Dana/Natalie, Natalie/Dan and Dan/Casey Author on LJ: leiascullyAuthor Website: No Parenthesis ( The X-Files) Why this must be read: One of the downsides of reading Sports Night fan fiction is that there are very few longer-length fics in the canon. We tend toward quality rather than quantity; most of what we get is beautifully written, but nearly always far too short – ficlets, drabbles and snippets, mostly. This isn't a complaint that can be levelled at And We Are All Together, which is something like 30 pages in length and, although it's not a continuous narrative – in fact, it's 30 pages of, um, ficlets, snippets and drabbles – it's perfect to sink into for a lovely, long read. leiascully is yet another writer new to Sports Night writing; her writing is fluid, vivid and lovely, and her depiction of the characters fills them with living, breathing colour. This is her only SN fic to date, but I very much hope one day to see more from her. And We Are All Together Part I And We Are All Together Part II

Fandom: U2 Pairing: Bono/The Edge Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Love Is BlindnessWhy this must be read:I guess you could call this a series of vignettes that, taken overall, coalesce into a full narrative. It's taken from both men's POVs, and skips back and forward in time, from early '80s Boy era up '00s Elevation era. One of the things I like about this one is the matter-of-factness of the sexual component - so much slash sex is of the earth-shattering variety that it's kind of nice to see that the "meh" sex happens sometimes! It adds an element of hominess, domesticity and comfortable well-wornness to the relationship which, given the way these two often act around one another, is very in-character. Being set in a bunch of different time periods, it also follows the ups and downs of the relationship, the contrasts in maturity between young Bono and Edge and older Bono and Edge, and the development of both of them as individuals and as a couple. Before the Thanksgiving holiday, I thought I'd pimp three stories by one of my favorite authors--CC. She's got a wonderful way with the boys, especially the domestic, committed years. Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Why this must be read: The boys are a committed, loving couple, who are also out of work, thanks to budgetary cuts on the force. Starsky is sure it will only be temporary, while Hutch is sure they'll face financial ruin while out of work. It's a wonderful meeting of the minds. But soon Starsky learns that they might have been living a little above their means. "We are not poor. We just don't have any money. There's a difference."
Having raised his finger to make another point, Hutch was clearly caught off-guard. "Wanna run that by me again?"
"Poor people are poor because they never have any money. We have money, but we spend it all."
Hutch thought it over for a moment. "So we're not poor; we’re just stupid. Is that your point?"
Starsky frowned and squirmed in his seat. "Not exactly. My point is I don't like this any better than you do, but I know everything's going to work out okay. We'll just cut back like you said."
"You just don't get it, do you, Starsk?" Hutch sorted through the napkins until he found the one he wanted. Holding it up for Starsky to see, he asked, "You see the circled number? Know what that is? It's how much income we need each month just to pay the bills we have now." He scrambled for another napkin and held it up. "See this number? It's how much income we're gonna have. Notice how much larger the 'need' is than the 'have?'"
Starsky grabbed both napkins and scrutinized Hutch's calculations. He'd known they would have to cut back on expenses, but he'd had no idea their situation was quite so dire. "Savings?" he asked, hopefully.
Hutch shook his head and held up another napkin with a dismally low figure on it.
Starsky studied the numbers some more before he finally sighed in defeat. "What're we gonna do?"They'll get through it together, but it's a fun journey along the way. It's simple, everyday living that makes this time so special. Whether they're living in a mansion or a cardboard box, they're doing it together and that makes all the difference in the world. Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Why this must be read: Together, forever, and loving it. Hutch was forced to have a haircut thanks to a comment made at an inopportune time. Now his mustache is gone and his hair is as short as it was before they became lovers. This clean-cut, clean-shaven Hutch is a new experience for Starsky and he's loving every minute of it. That led to the boys discussing the properties of being normal. "Do I really look that different?"
"Yes and no. I mean, you looked good before, but you look like you did then. . . ."
"Then when?"
"Before. You know, back when we were normal."
"Starsky, I'm as normal as I ever was; unfortunately, so are you. "
"You know what I'm trying to say. We're slightly left of normal now."
"Trust me--we didn't change; 'normal' did."
"Hutch, normal is normal. It's constant."
"I don't think so. It's more of a pattern that shifts around to fit what's natural, don't you think? Some things stay the same, but others change to fit the environment."
"We changed a lot of things, Hutch."
"Yeah, but some stuff is the same, like watching you eat beef stew for breakfast and doughnuts for lunch. Or sitting in the car for four hours playing 'guess a number' until I'm ready to shoot myself or you or both of us."
"Okay, but what about the things that changed? You're saying they're normal to you now?"
"Yep, 'normal' now is waking up with your fat, hairy leg wrapped around me. Ow, ow, ow--enough already--I'll take it back. Your, um, stocky leg wrapped around me. How's that?"
"Acceptable. What else?"
"Seriously? 'Normal' is going to work with the smartest man I know and coming home to the most beautiful man I know. Oh, this is fun. You're actually blushing. Let's see, what else? How about cutting my hair even though I don't want to, but because you asked me to? Or you loving me even when I don't deserve it. Or maybe most of all, it's feeling every nerve in my body light up just from the touch of your fingers on my lips."Whatever state they're in--normal or left of normal--they're still the same boys and watching them experience life and love together is a wonderful thing. Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Why this must be read: Hutch changed the television channel in the middle of a blowjob; changed the channel from a Dodgers game Starsky was listening to...in the middle of a blowjob. To Starsky, this signals the beginning of the end of their relationship. The spice is gone, he thinks, and they need help. Where does Starsky go to find help? A sex shop and he's dragging Hutch along for the ride because it's THEIR problem. Ain't togetherness wonderful? But along the way, looking over all the things the shop has to offer, they get right to the heart of the issue. "You are such an idiot," Hutch fumed. "Do you mean to tell me that I'm spending a perfectly good afternoon off work in a porn shop because you think we're--that I--you're--Shit! Starsky you can be so dense sometimes." He turned and paced down the aisle. "All this," he waved at the shelves surrounding him, "because of one little--"
"But that's how it starts, Hutch--"
"What starts?"
Starsky shrugged. "You know how it is. You're going along thinking things are okay, and then your attention starts drifting and you're starting to notice other wom-- uh, people, and then before you know it, you're calling off dates and making excuses, and then...." His voice trailed away as it became apparent that Hutch was laughing too hard to hear him. "Mind telling me what's so funny?"
"You." Still snickering, Hutch closed the distance between them and pulled Starsky into his arms. "You're what's so funny."
Wondering why being laughed at was making him feel so good, Starsky feigned a step back, putting just enough effort into it to cause Hutch's arms to tighten around him. "Shut up," he muttered.
Hutch chuckled one more time and pulled away. "Okay, I'll shut up. But only after I say one more thing." He reached out to straighten Starsky's collar. "Are you listening?"
Lost in the sensation of Hutch's thumb caressing the skin beneath his collar, Starsky could only nod.
"We," Hutch waggled his finger between them, "are not done yet. We're not going to be done for a very long time. If we're together for the next fifty years, it won't be nearly long enough. Forever wouldn't be enough, got that?"It's a wonderful journey and we're lucky enough to take it with them. There's some wild and wonderful things to be found on the shelves, but there are some pretty wild and wonderful things between just the two of them. They don't need leather or rubber, they've got each other. Sweet Submission
