12:40 am The Strangest Boy in the Entire Galaxy by Jaxmari (R)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Obi-Wan/original female characters, Obi-Wan/original male characters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] imadra_blue
Author Website: Jaxmari's Skyhawke page
Why this must be read:

Jax is a mistress of good Obi-Wan stories, and this one is no exception. This story is about Obi-Wan's sexual awakening and how long it takes him to figure out that no, he is not the only gay Eskimo person in the whole galaxy. Light and fluffy, with just a little bit of angst.

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: The Professionals Fanfiction

Why this must be read:

This story belongs to several categories of fanfiction I always especially appreciated: The action/adventure genre, as I indicated previously, the "First time" kind (and for me, in the aforementioned context, it means more the "Get to know you" theme or the partnership's beginnings than the first sexual or sentimental encounter) and last but not least the resolution of a psychological confict.

To sum up the topic, without revealing too much, it mainly deals with the first meeting of Bodie and Doyle as with the creation of CI5 and the premises of their friendship and partnership; the sexual attraction between the two men is just hinted but, like other elements of the story, sets up a basis for future developments. The plot is cleverly tied up and includes some of the best action scenes you can find in this fandom. There is nothing to reproach to the characterisations, especially of Doyle (some readers may find Bodie a little too tame but that's hardly a flaw).

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Illya Kuryakin / Napoleon Solo
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nakeisha
Author Website: Partners Forever
Why this must be read:

Like I said before, I love Illya and Napoleon as old men. I have no real idea why, but maybe it's because it's different, 9 out of 10 times without a case, but with fond memories.

Age cannot sully is an almost lyrical fic which has Napoleon and Illya in their seventies, musing about each other's hair, and not a moment straying out of character.

[livejournal.com profile] nakeisha has always a good balance between certain elements used in her fic and no matter what fic you read it's always a pleasure.

03:44 pm Trial By Water by doomcrayon (R)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (2003)
Pairing: Kara/Leoben, hints of Kara/Lee
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] doomcrayon
Author Website: Doomcrayon's Fics
Why this must be read:

IMO there is a dearth of Kara/Leoben fics, even after the events of S3, but what we do get tends to be really good work, and this fic is a wonderful representation. Trial by Water is a really interesting piece of story telling that features a Kara POV and a film-noirish setting. The fic goes AU after "Scar" and explores the themes of death, connection, and spirituality in a new way. When I reread this to rec after bookmarking it several months ago, it struck me how prescient it was-- [livejournal.com profile] doomcrayon explores a planet-side, isolated, and unwillingly domesticated Kara and Leoben well before the show introduced that plot. The author also really does some wonderfully subtle things with water, to set the tone but also to foreshadow in a way that makes it so much more fun to read back through.

The snow was always melting but never melted. The water was always moving but never moved. Nothing changed: not the trees, the sky, or the shelter, not the dimensions of the glassy lake or the Cylon who found her floating there.

07:13 pm Predators by Jennifer Lyon (rated R)
Hi! I am Francis Kerst (again!). After a long interruption, during which this fandom had disappeared from crack_van, I will be again the driver for "The Professionals" this month; my intention is to favour the action / adventure stories, which have not been very often presented and recommended in the various "Pros" communities but, who knows? I may well change direction along the road. I have also a leaning for the gen first time stories; I mean the "first meeting, getting to know you" stories.

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Unknown

Why tis must be read:

This appears as an action story, belonging to the "mystery novel" genre, almost a thriller, as well as a "first time" story (of the usual, slash kind) between two hard men, partners of five years who, all this time, had shared everything: the burdens, plights and merriment of their common destiny without becoming clearly aware of the bond that ties them together, and still need a last blow, a personal tragedy to realise they cannot live or even survive apart, and must cling to each other, as work mates, as friends, maybe as lovers some day soon?

So Bodie and Doyle are the target of a perfectly spun, heinous and murderous ploy and charged with a crime they didn't commit. But they are not completely alone and forsaken; Cowley is by their side and eager to defend his owns against all, Minister and police alike. I positively loved this picture of a motherly, fiercely protective Cow, who doesn't abdicate anything of his authority and firm hold on his men but knows whom he can trust and why.

The outcome of the plot is not what's best in the story but, well, it's not exactly a detective novel; the interest is elsewhere.
