09:20 am My Life in Black and White by Paddy (NC-17)
Fandom: SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author Website: Story found at 852 Prospect
Why this must be read:

Jim and Blair meet as college students. And Jim's whole conception of himself crumbles on two fronts.

I know what gay guys do. At least, I think I do. Every all-American insult includes a reference: 'cocksucker'; 'shove it up your ass;' 'buttfucker.' I can't actually imagine the mechanics of it, don't really want to. I just want to have Sandburg on his back looking up at me. Beyond that, the details are grey.

Those feelings don't fit into my neat black-or-white world. I don't know what to do with them. No rule applies here.

I'm not gay, real men aren't. Gays are worse than freaks, my old man said so. If I said, 'hey, Sandburg, I think about touching you,' he'd lean forward in his intense way and start talking. And by the time he finished, I'd believe that black was white, white was black, grey was beautiful, and nothing was against the rules.

09:40 am Conjunction by Fluterbev (NC-17)
Fandom: SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author Website: Fluterbev's Ephemera
Why this must be read:

A number of fantastic authors took up the challenge to write a story to commemorate Sentinel's ten-year anniversary. Fluterbev's contribution just blew me away. Blair went missing right after the press conference, and Jim's spent the intervening years looking for him. But what he finds isn't at all what he expected.

Jim continued to search in his own time, but he toned it down, recognizing that his obsession with finding Blair was doing neither himself nor the department any good. Instead, he followed up the sparse leads he'd gotten sporadically, then reduced his activities to once a month, then every six months. Then, three years ago, he'd made the decision to limit himself to a database search just once a year.

He had chosen, instead of the date in early June that Blair had disappeared, to run it on the anniversary of the day they met - March 21st. The date that Blair had impersonated a doctor, confronted Jim with the reality of what he was, and saved his life. It seemed, somehow, more hopeful to focus on a date which had such positive connotations, rather than one so strongly associated with loss.

Now, logging into the PD system, and setting the parameters to seek any mention of Sandburg, Blair, Jim set the first of his planned database searches running; then went to get a cup of coffee.

This was going to be a long - and no doubt fruitless - night.

Rubbing his eyes tiredly as he walked back from the break room five minutes later, Jim sat down and took a sip of the too-hot coffee. Glancing blearily back at the computer screen, his heart almost stopped in shock when he saw the words flashing on the screen.

Match found.

Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: William Bush and Horatio Hornblower
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] dastier
Author Website: tagged in author's LJ
Why this must be read:

There is no question that [livejournal.com profile] dastier writes nothing but quality fic. High quality. Here she delves into one of the pivotal events within "Lord Hornblower" -- the expedition to Caudebec. And we win. The characterization is, as always, true to C.S. Forester's vision. Coupled with [livejournal.com profile] dastier's special insight and techinical skill, this is another prize from her pen.

05:12 pm Beautiful Oblivion, by Hamlette (NC-17)
Fandom: Due South
Pairings: Kowalski/Turnbull, Fraser/Vecchio
Author's website: Hamlette's Hamlet

Why this story must be read: Another 'OMG I can't believe this hasn't been recc'd' rec. This novel-length story does a fantastic job of exploring some of the post-COTW possibilities as well as clearing up a niggling season one plot-point - why were Fraser and Vecchio chased by a Canadian mobster with a suspicious resemblance to Constable Turnbull?

The relationships are impressively built up, and the story is heatbreaking in places as we see four men left broken by circumstances beyond their control. As much as I adore the Fraser/Vecchio relationship in this, I'll admit that it's the fleshing out of Turnbull's originally two-dimensional character into someone with a great backstory that turns this fic special. It's practically impossible for me to choose just one excerpt to post here, because the length means there are so many fabulous scenes that I'd want to include them all.

11:48 pm One on One by Jesse (NC-17)
Fandom: THE X FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Gossamer archive
Why this must be read:

I'm sure I'm not the only one who would have liked to punch Mulder for his behaviour during the Diana fiasco, particularly the Two Fathers/One Son arc. But this story by Jesse goes a long way towards soothing the raging beast within. Set immediately post Two Fathers, this vignette is actually a lot more than merely the smut biscuit it claims to be. I love authors who can really get inside the heads of these characters, who can fully bring forth what the show's writers often only hint at. There's a lot of depth to the characterisation here and that makes it much richer than just some hot shower sex. Not that I'm dismissing hot shower sex, mind you. I'm all about the hot sex, shower or otherwise.
