08:51 am Kowalski by Pares (PG)
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Kowalski/Stella, Vecchio/Stella
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kormantic
Author Website: the ska lab

Why this must be read:

In some ways, this is sort of the other side of the coin to "Retired Guy Hobbies"; this is Stella's story, and though it's nominally Vecchio/Stella, it (not surprisingly, given the title) actually deals much more with her relationship with Kowalski, what it meant to her in the past and what it continues to mean to her. I know Stella isn't the most popular character in dS fandom, but I like her, and Pares has a wonderful take on her here, strong without being a bitch, practical without being in any way unfeeling. And there's a lovely Frannie cameo, too, all determined and perceptive and protective of her big brother.

10:59 am For the Kingdom of Heaven by c_elisa (Gen)
Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE - ASTONISHING
Pairing: No pairing, Dr. Henry "Hank" McCoy aka Beast
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] c_elisa
Author Website: Intimate Structure
Why this must be read:

Putting aside the brilliance of this story for a moment (and it is brilliant!), this fic is a technical masterpiece. Told in the ever-so-difficult first person point of view, [livejournal.com profile] c_elisa manages to write the most pure, perfect and even more importantly, in character Hank McCoy that I've read. It honestly feels like we are in the head of the character in a way that will leave you utterly fascinated.

This fic is a character exploration piece and boils down to the question of how a man answers to his own conscience. Is it better to do the wrong thing for the right reason, the right thing for the wrong reason, or nothing at all? At the end of the day, what can you live with?

The story behind this fic will take your breath away. It deals with the "cure" for mutants in a way that X-3 utterly failed to do. The author weaves in complicated medical themes, religious persuasions, human foibles, and the compassion that is ever present in Dr. McCoy to tell a tale that made me sit back and have to take a deep breath. And then read it again and again and again. Go. Read. Love.

Author's Summary: Dr. Hank McCoy observes the cure.

04:21 pm Conduit by mmmchelle (NC-17)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: Sheppard/Weir, implied McKay/Weir, UST McKay/Sheppard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle
Author Website: Conduit

Why this must be read: Okay, I'm the first to admit that I'm a huge [livejournal.com profile] mmmchelle fan, she's one of my go to writers in the SGA fandom for quality work. Conduit is my favorite of her stories. Although at first glance this might seem like a het fic - and, well, okay, it is a het fic - it's really a McKay/Sheppard fic in disguise. John's longing for Rodney is so strong it hurts. Elizabeth is just the lucky lucky woman who acts as a um - conduit - between John and Rodney. This is a short fic, but it packs such a powerful punch that I find myself reading it again and again. The imagery is so strong and John's want is such a painful pretty thing - well, read it for yourself and you'll see what I mean.

08:54 pm The Past Redeemed, by Sue Bartholomew (PG-13)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: Black Raptor listing, FanFiction.net listing
Why this must be read:

Bitter and hurting after his friends patronized the rival establishment of Maude, his mother, instead of his own long-dreamed of, and now lost, saloon, Ezra believes he was a fool to trust anyone except himself, and resolves to return to a solitary, self-sufficient life. He quietly leaves Four Corners, not telling anyone he doesn't intend to come back. Meanwhile, Chris is questioning the killing rage in which he gunned down Eli Joe, probably Vin's only chance to clear his name and lift the $500 bounty on his head that endangers him, his friends, and Four Corners.

As five of the regulators escort Eli Joe's accomplice to Tascosa for trial, Ezra falls in with a gang he discovers, to his horror and confusion, is stalking his former associates with deadly intentions.

Sue tells a gripping action tale. Don't miss this one.
