07:53 pm Hostages to Fortune by Teresa C (PG-13)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: None

Why this must be read: On top of being just plain well-written, this story wins big for two reasons. First, it's got a really nifty plot idea: the real father of the real Russell Edwin Nash shows up at Connor MacLeod's antique store, looking for his son. Second, it's a rare look inside the Highlander family circa 1980: Connor MacLeod, his daughter Rachel Ellenstein, and his student Duncan MacLeod. [livejournal.com profile] teresa_c does an exemplary job of giving the reader a very intimate look at the family dynamics without being obvious about it.

As an extra treat, there are cameos by "Michael," a hazel-eyed Immortal who would rather leave the country than fight Connor MacLeod, and an unnamed guy with a cane who says he saw the whole thing.

Fandom: TOUR OF DUTY
Pairing: Sergeant Zeke Anderson/Lieutenant Myron Goldman

Author website: Notes From the Underground, Open Air Insane Asylum

Why this is a must read:

This is another "after the war" look at the relationship between Sgt Zeke Anderson and Lt Myron Goldman. Myron gets himself into a barfight and ends up in the local drunk tank. His jailors are only too happy to turn him over to Zeke who comes to bail him out. It's a story of give and take- of how Myron can't understand what Zeke sees in him as he tries to destroy himself. And of Zeke trying to make Myron understand just how much he does love him, warts and all. This story doesn't shy away from some simple truths either- that it's hard enough being a Vietnam veteran, but they had to be homosexuals on top of that.

"Well, I do enjoy rumpling you up," Zeke answered back. This was one of the aspects of Myron's predictability that he both loved and hated. After a tear up like last night, Myron would be snarky and then sink into self-hate and misery. And with every fiber in his being, Myron always thought Zeke would leave him. He would try to be playful and sweet, try to tempt Zeke to stay with him. It was also the boy's way of apologizing for his mistakes.

“Yeah,” came the husky reply. Myron pushed himself off the countertop, sliding his body along Zeke’s until he was standing pressed right up against him. “You wanna take this into the other room or get started right in here?” Myron’s hands settled easily on Zeke’s shoulders before sliding down across his lover’s chest. He was a little shocked when Zeke’s hands trapped his when he reached the button on the jeans.

"Ya can't buy my love with this..." Zeke growled and tightened his grip on Myron's wrist.

Jerking back hard as if slapped, Myron’s face went slack and he stared back at Zeke with hurt in his eyes. “What am I supposed to do then? I don’t understand what it is that you want!”

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape

Why this must be read:
This is an astringent, emotionally wrenching-yet-healing story, as befits a Snape/Harry fic. I love the antagonism and the way the author makes one wonder how these two men will ever get along, but still makes you want things to work out.

Also, the sex is of the hot-angry-angsty sort. Some people like that a lot. *g*

10:47 pm The Measure of Our Torment by Amorette (R)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] amorettea
Author Website: The Mythadventures of Hercules and Friends

Why this must be read:
Post-Hogwarts Snape/Harry is my favorite type, and this story by Amorette has a more serious tone. I think the political situation could turn out like this, so it's worth pondering.

The romantic elements are not sweet, which is just how it should be with these two.
