12:51 am Crush, by Dharma Bum (PG)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Blue Beetle/Booster Gold
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dharmasfic
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Beetle and Booster have never been the most mature of Leaguers. This fic takes the concept and runs with it, producing a story that manages to be adorable and completely in character, while avoiding crossing the line into cutesy-annoying territory.

Also, it has Ted and Bea chatting about nothing in particular over peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, which can never be a bad thing.

09:04 am Florida by BrooklineGirl (NC-17)
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Vecchio/Kowalski
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brooklinegirl
Author Website: BrooklineGirl's due South page

Why this must be read:

This isn't an uncommon setup: things have gone south (so to speak) with Fraser and Stella, and both Rays are drunk and miserable and realize that they have a shocking/depressing/amusing number of things in common, so maybe they should be drunk and somewhat-less-miserable together. (And hot. Let us not forget the hot.) What makes this fic exceptional is the execution. The atmosphere is absolutely brilliant; Florida just seeps off the page, all sticky heat and stagnation and overexposed colors, and you're completely enveloped before you realize it. The progression of the relationship is very deftly handled, a compelling and believable combination of hesitant steps and sudden leaps forward and stumbles backward. And did I mention the hot? Because these boys are really freaking hot together, and BLG brings that with the best of them. This is an angstier piece than some of my other recommendations, but it's to a purpose, and there's a surprisingly hopeful, possibility-filled ending that feels well-earned and just exactly right.

02:22 pm La Corrido del Coyote, by G.M. Atwater (PG-17)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] erinrua
Author Website: Black Raptor listing
Why this must be read:

Some readers don't like Original Characters. I think a well-written OC can open up the often incestuous arena of fanfiction and give us new insights, or just new adventures, for the characters we love. Often a good OC leaves us wanting to see more of him or her. Sam McLachlan is the best kind of OC.

Skittish as a wild thing, proud, distrustful of kindness, but willing to work hard, Sam quietly earns a tentative place in Four Corners, under the protection of Inez and the Seven. Until a shocking act of violence turns all assumptions upside down.

La Corrido del Coyote is vivid story-telling, highlighting each of the Seven, and making you care about the outcome.

The author rated it PG-17. I would call it PG-13 at the most.

07:52 pm Undercurrent by John Blonde (PG-13)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Cassandra, Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Pandoemonium
Why this must be read: For one thing, because the Cassandra in this story is in no way demonized.

Undercurrent is a short story (less than 1,000 words) set a few months after the Horsemen episodes. Cassandra meets Duncan for dinner; they talk; he escorts her back to her hotel. The true "action" of the story is, as the title says, in the undercurrents.

The writing (word choice, pacing, imagery, all that stuff) is beautifully done. For those readers who treasure a well-done sentence, the last sentence of Undercurrent is a keeper.

08:27 pm Skintight by Toft Froggy (NC-17)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy
Author Website: Second Skin

Why this must be read: This story is a must-read because it's John like we've never seen him - as a transvestite! - and even if you start reading and think, "hey, this isn't really my thing," you find yourself drawn in. This story had me mesmerized from the first paragraph and [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy's words paint a very vivid picture. It's almost painful (but in a good way) to read as Sheppard and McKay stumble into a relationship despite their best efforts. This is a John Sheppard with a whole different set of issues with Rodney trying to wisecrack and bully his way past them. [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy makes this story hot but not sleazy and romantic but not trite. It's on my list of "bestever" fics because it runs the whole gamut of emotion and leaves me feeling completely satisfied that these two screwed up men will make it together. (and best of all - there are two more installments linked at her livejournal!)
