08:54 am When This Fog Lifts by Katarik, PG-13
Fandom: DC COMICS
Characters/Pairing[s]: Bruce/Jason
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] katarik
Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=katarik
Why this must be read:

You may know [Bad username or site: ”Katarik” @ livejournal.com] for her masterful take on the Wilson family (Slade, Adeline, Grant, Joey, and Rose) but those aren’t the only characters she writes well. This is what waa in Bruce’s head during That Scene in Batman 641. Not what might have been, or could be conjectured, but what indubitably was.

Again, this story is quite short, so rather than try to excerpt it I’ll just recommend you go read it.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Blair/Rafe, Jim/Blair
Warning: Character Death (not Jim or Blair)
Author on LJ: n/a (?)
Author Website: Kadru's Site (via Wayback)
Why this must be read:

Jim and Blair break up and, much to Jim's consternation, Blair begins dating Rafe. What I really like is the way that there is no great big reset button when Jim and Blair start dating again. The events of the story change him, just like they would change a person in real life and that makes the story more real and the characters more appealing.

09:52 am Currents by Anna (PG)
Fandom: Hockey RPF
Pairing: Jordin Tootoo/Ilya Kovalchuk

Why this must be read:

(from [profile] bkm5191)
Well it's Jordin and Ilya. And it's gentle and quiet and hopeful.

Jordin and Ilya are, on the surface, about as different as two people can get and still be hockey players. Jordin is a Native Canadian third-liner (drafted at number 98 in the fourth round) and Ilya is a hotshot Russian sniper (and a number one draft pick.)

They don't even play on the same team.

Fictionally speaking though they are the two left behind. Jordin's brother died, let's leave it at died, and Ilya lost his best friend after a car accident. That is to say his best friend wasn't the one who died, but he ended up leaving anyway. These two events have been endlessly dissected in fic.

A lot of history hangs over these two, so it's delightful to read Anna's fic because she has such a delicate way of dealing with them and their past.

This is a fic about a summer road trip. The kind of road trip where you just lock the door and get in the car, where you trail your fingers out of the window in the breeze and possibility shimmers over the journey the same way the heat rises up from the road.

06:08 pm Negative Effect by Ridley C. James and Williamson M. Scott (PG-13)
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: Not sure
Author Website: The Hunter's Tomb (Not a lot up there yet, but her full list of fics is on her homepage on fanfiction.net)

Why this must be read:

This one's an old one from over a year ago. I'm reccing it for those of you who don’t frequent fanfiction.net. I definitely encourage you to give this one a try. Long and plotty (76,948 words), it’s a great episodic fic for those of you with a bit of time on your hands.

The authors have really done their homework on this one. The plot is tightly woven, the legend and background carefully planned, and the characters still ring true, even after season 2 has come and gone. There's a great mix of humour, drama, and mystery to keep you strung along.

Enjoy the read and don't forget to send feedback.

08:00 pm "I Really Can't Stay" by Sabine (G)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Jack Harkness/the Hand
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iamsab
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] fromthesabrary
Why this must be read:

This is the tale of two men and a hand and a love that can never be--except this is Whoverse, Torchwood-verse, and anything is possible, including an affectionate relationship between Jack Harkness and a hand in a jar.

Sabine's writing is stunning, no matter what the subject or fandom. She knows words, knows how to use them for maximum impact, and knows how to put them together so prettily.

09:11 pm A Newtonian Co-Dependence by Lenore (NC-17)
Fandom: Heroes
Pairing: Nathan/Peter
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scribblinlenore
Author Website: Lenore's Stories
Why this must be read:

This story is a simply stunning exploration of Peter and Nathan's relationship, and how it is in many ways like gravity. Such a natural progression from the two interacting as children (but no chan! Promise!) to their sexual relationship and how it is just so much more than sex.

11:46 pm Degrees of Separation by Mosca (NC-17)
Fandom: ER
Pairing: Elizabeth/Abby, Kerry/Susan, Kerry/Abby, Susan/Abby, Elizabeth/Susan, and Kerry/Elizabeth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mosca
Author Website: homoneurotica
Why this must be read:

Well, first of all, the whole idea of giving us a sexy or smutty vignette for each pairing among a group of four? Totally irresistible for sheer variety. Mosca's written a lot of great slash, and this one ties in to some of her other universes, but you can enjoy this fic without having read the other stories (although after reading "Degrees of Separation" you'll probably want to dip in to the rest of Mosca's stuff).

There are lots of things to enjoy about this fic other than the sheer fun and sexiness of the f/f lovin' (one of which takes place in the drug lockup, the Chekhov's gun of ER porn). The vignette structure allows for a kaleidoscopic view of each woman, showing different facets of her personality, her history, her sexuality, the way they express themselves in different relationships. The writing is sharp and intelligent, and the character observations believable.
