Fandom: DC COMICS
Characters/Pairing[s]: Jim Gordon; Barbara Gordon, Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Alfred Pennyworth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hradzka
Author Website: http://hradzka.livejournal.com/
Why this must be read:

Because you will love Jim Gordon even more by the time you're done. And if you get along with your father you'll call him, and if you don't you'll feel hopeful that families can be made as well as born, and if you don't have him anymore you'll think of him fondly, and smile.

This rec is all about the emotional reactions this story will engender, mostly because I think I've run out of adjectives superlative enough to praise [livejournal.com profile] hradzka's writing, but also because, well, this story will do your heart good.

Why this must be read:

(from [personal profile] crankygeek)
Because, quite simply, it's gorgeously written.
In 442 carefully chosen words, the story is funny and sweet and lyrical and dreamy and wistful and gorgeous and above all, it is hopeful and a little bit sad. Her characters are engaging and the story's crafted in such a way that the mundane suddenly becomes the beautiful: it's all about the stolen moments and the feeling that you're left with, how you wish the moment that the characters are in could go on for them forever.

In The Desert We Get Sunburned

[and when you're done reading that? The Earth is Flat by [profile] bkm5191 - [Unknown site tag]a tag/sequel set many years after "in the desert we get sunburned", is just astounding.]

11:03 pm The Story Affectionately Known as George, by silvercharmer [PG]
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: JC/Joey
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: not known
Why this must be read:

This is a sweet story that I don't think I've seen recced anywhere, in fact, I really cannot remember how I found my way to it, but it deserves some love, not least for being a pairing that doesn't get a lot of attention. There's a problem with JC, and Joey is the one who decides to do something about it, by kidnapping JC and taking him off on a road trip. Joey is big-hearted, loving and worried; JC is defensive and angry.

How's this for an explanation for why JC is so inarticulate:

'No! You wanted to hear this, so shut up and hear it. I write songs because it's the only way I know how to say what I mean! And even that comes out all wrong. I mean, look at my songs. You think anyone's going to remember them in ten years? Five even? No! But I do it because it's the best I can do. Everything's up here, Joe.' He pointed to his head. 'It's all there, and the only way anyone else can ever see it is if they're in my goddamn head. What I've got is good, I know it's good, but as soon as I open my mouth it turns cheap and I lose it.'

The Story Affectionately Known as George

One necessary word of warning: the formatting seems to have been messed badly, possibly because the story is in web archive rather than original posting.

11:34 pm How Watson Learned the Trick by Arthur Conan Doyle (G)
Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES
Pairing: none
Subcategory: humor
Author on LJ: nope
Author Website: nope

Why this must be read:

I thought I'd post this little oddity for fans of the Doyle Holmes and then return to slash.

In my initial post this month I mentioned that many writers have done parodies and pastiches of the canon.  Unfortunately they are very hard to find on the web -- most of the ones I know are in print format.

However,  Sir Arthur was not above doing them himself. This is one of his pastiches.  See what happened in 1922 when Doyle, who was heartedly sick of the characters, got to make fun of Watson.
