Why this must be read:

With so many post Doomsday fics being full of angst sometimes you just want to read a fic about Rose Tyler getting on with her life, having adventures and kicking ass, and that's exactly what Livii gives us here. In this fic Rose, now the Director of Inconsistent Temporal Activity at Torchwood, has hilarious dimension hopping adventures along with Mickey and Jake.

Oh, and did I mention, it also has a zombie Elvis in it.

"Their queen," Mickey said, disbelievingly.

"I know, I know," Rose said, sighing. "But the Ancephalods thought I was responsible for killing the monster threatening their city, and as a reward, they've crowned me."

"You did kill the monster," Jake said.

Rose waved her hand, and three green creatures appeared in a flash. "No, no," she said, flustered, as Mickey and Jake tried not to laugh. "I don't need you. I was just making a hand gesture!"

The creatures moved away quietly, bowing as they went.

"Clearly, you need to get me out of this," Rose said, pleading with her eyes, not daring to move any part of her body again.

"Your highness," Jake said, "we couldn't possibly deprive your noble subjects of their exalted ruler."

"They're big and ugly green creatures!" Rose said. "And we're way out from anything like our own universe. Come on, just help me down off this throne."

Mickey moved forward to give her a hand, but Jake held him back. "Hang on. How do we know you won't just whack us with that sceptre when you have a chance?"

"Why would I do that?" Rose said sweetly. "Because you're being right arses to me even though I saved these adorable, intelligent creatures from a horrible demise? Nah."

Mickey and Jake laughed, and helped her scramble down from the impossibly high throne.

"Thank you," she said, graciously and regally, and then she smacked them both on the arm with her sceptre and ran off ahead towards the transporter.

08:50 am Lovers and Dreamers by Amy (PG)
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: gen
Author's LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fox1013
Author's website: Inner Geekdom

Why this must be read:

Truth be told, this should have been recced a week ago, on crossover day. But I couldn't let my month go by without giving my fellow travellers in the Crack Van the opportunity to read this.

LuthorCorp purchases the old Muppet Theatre, and the Muppets keep right on trucking with their stage show.

Amy writes the best Muppet-voices of any person in fandom, and has some excellent early-Smallville voices down, and reading this is a treat,

An Excerpt:

Clark smiled at the oversized rat. "Thanks, Rizzo. We couldn't have done it without you."

He was fairly certain the rat would have blushed, if he had pigmentation that might have led to it. Being a rat, Rizzo just grinned. Clark wasn't surprised. He had that effect on lots of people. And frogs, and pigs, and various other creatures. He had to remember that referring to "people" was awfully limiting, especially with his job.

"Clark!" called Scooter. Clark turned. Scooter wasn't a pig, a frog, or a person. Clark wasn't exactly certain what Scooter was, but he was awfully nice, and he did most of the tech work at the theatre.

07:59 pm Love and Levity by Ozma (PG-13)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Luna/George
Length: 28,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ozma_katiebell
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] ozmafics

Why this must be read:

Luna is becoming of the little black dress of shipper fics in the HP fandom. I've seen Luna paired with Harry, Ron, Charlie, George (as in this fic), Draco, Theodore Nott, and even Snape! Given the right circumstances, Luna could be credibly shipped with many characters. She has a quiet strength and dreamy whimsy that is quite appealing.

I find Ozma's pairing of Luna and George to be particularly effective and enjoyable. Luna's voice rings very true, and since she is probably the most difficult to get right, the story hinges on her correct characterization. George is also canon compliant. Even though we rarely, if ever, see the twins apart in canon, Ozma believably differentiates between Fred and George and builds upon those differences to show us two distinct and unique individuals. The story is told from George's POV, which is somewhat unique. All in all, Ozma does an excellent job of bringing these two secondary characters together in a believable and satisfying way.
