Why this must be read:

For a fandom with a couple of thousand players and ex-players some people have a disproportionate amount of fic written about them. One of those people is Sergei Fedorov. It sometimes feels like Sergei is always an outsider in his own life. Always at the fringes, the last one picked and the first one dropped.

This is a perfect, bittersweet, looking back fic. It's about all kinds of endings and the possibility of one very important beginning.

Why this must be read:

I think some of the hardest characters to write in Doctor Who fandom are the Second Doctor and his companions. Here uktechgirl gives us a beautifully characterised look at the Second Doctor and his companion Jamie, seen through the eyes of a snooty French waiter at the extremely posh restaurant the Doctor has taken Jamie to in order to thank him for being such a good friend.

The characterisation is fabulous and the relationship between Two and Jamie comes across exactly as it does on screen.

Guillaume saw off two more customers with a flurry of apologetic bowing, and retreated to the kitchen, returning some ten minutes’ later with a steaming platter of fruits de mer.

‘Fruits?’ declared the youth, again displaying that peculiar grasp of the local tongue as Guillaume announced the dish, laying the platter on its stand. ‘I’ve never known a fruit with a head and ten legs on it!’

The Doctor gleefully wiggled his fingers over the plate, as Guillaume lingered, at a perfectly fitting attentive distance.

‘Langoustines, Jamie! And these are mussels, and, oh, winkles, how lovely, I do hope there’s a pin: yes, there it is. Cockles, too. And this, Jamie, is an oyster.’

‘You’ll not fool me, Doctor. That’s a rock, and I’m not eating it.’

‘Yes, well, one doesn’t eat the shell. The oyster itself is what’s sitting on the shell. Although, under the right circumstances, these clever little fellows create pearls instead.’

‘Aye? Well, I’m not eating any of them, either.’
