06:47 am One Plus One by Moondroplette (PG)
Hi there, I’m [livejournal.com profile] elizabethhelena and I’ll be driving the crackTorino for August. My theme for this month's recs is "and now for something completely different". I’ll be recommending stories that in my occasionally humble opinion did an excellent job using different characters, scenarios, styles of fic, and ideas to shed new light onto this old (er, I meant venerable!) fandom.

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] moondroplette
Author Website: her stories can be found on the Me & Thee archive here

Why this must be read:

The only reason Rebel and I survived reviewing very possibly the worst S & H episode ever, Huggy Bear and the Turkey, was because it marked the only appearance of Huggy’s cousin Leotis, played by the very fine Stan Shaw. Like this actor, the story One Plus One captured the complexity of a young black man who despite his mental limitations is far more observant than the so-called normal people around him. Unlike the original episode, Moondroplette neither idealizes nor belittles the mathematical ‘idiot savant’ Leotis. Instead, she creates a very realistic and fascinating look at this fandom’s favourite slash pairing through the eyes of someone who sees truth from a unique yet no less accurate angle.

02:41 pm Tessellation by Mercurial_wit (R)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Leoben/Kara, Sam/Kara
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mercurial_wit
Author Website: Fic organized in Tags here.
Why this must be read:

Brutal, violent, terrifying and so damn good that I'm really astonished this hasn't been recced before - Tessellation is the story of what happens when you come face to face with the ghosts of your past and realize that they are all too solid. Worse, you are doomed to repeat the same cycle time and again until death or madness finally releases you from your self-built prison.

Season 3 opens with an occupied New Caprica and an imprisoned Kara. This tells her piece of that untold story. Even more so, [livejournal.com profile] mercurial_wit shows us Leoben in a way that leaves the reader undecided if he is monstrous or strangely, horribly, and humanly recognizable.

If you haven't read this one yet, you've been missing out. Go, read, and be duly impressed!

Author's Note: I have been immensely enamoured of Kara and Leoben's relationship ever since 'Flesh and Bone' in S1, and the writers left a canonical gap in the flow of the S3 premiere that I found far, far too tempting not to fill in. So I scribbled a little last night and a little tonight, and this fell out. Spoilers up to 3x01 'Occupation'.

Happy August, all! I’m [livejournal.com profile] gkingsley and this is my first time driving the van, so I’ll try not to scrape the paint or ding the door as we cruise through the X-Men Movieverse.

I don’t have a theme. While I will admit to being partial to Logan/Rogue, I’ll try to post a little bit of everything.

That being said … let’s get driving!

Fandom: X-MEN MOVIEVERSE
Pairing: Jean Grey/Scott Summer
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] danniisupernova
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

This is a short but intimate look at what it’s like to date someone who can read your mind. Set prior to the first movie, when Scott and Jean are students themselves. Heartbreaking … almost brutal.

"Why do you think, Jean?" He thinks very loudly of kissing her. He thinks about her laugh and her hair and the way she looks when she's reading, biting her lip and concentrating so hard that sometimes she makes the books in the library float.

Hello riders! I’m [livejournal.com profile] ivorykiss and I’m your Smallville [livejournal.com profile] crack_van driver for this month. SV fandom is wide and varied from ‘ships to styles, the fic this fandom produced, and still does, thank the gods!, something for everyone, from laugh out loud cracky fic to dirty!bad!wrong!

Fair warning! Most of my recs this month fall into a darker category. I like stories that provoke emotions, be it happy or creepy or angsty or that sucker punch to the gut.

*starts the van*

Hold on people, it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!

Also, gentle readers, feed the authors, remember feedback is a terrible thing to keep to yourself!

Let's start out with some dirty!bad!wrong!

Fandom: SMALLVILLE

Why this must be read:

A post Exodus fic, that draws you in whether you want it to or not. Totally believable, totally creepy and the last couple of paragraphs just hurt.

07:58 pm I Think That I Shall Never See by Vanillafluffy (PG)
Fandom: MISCELLANEOUS JOHNNY DEPP MOVIES (Benny and Joon)
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] vanillafluffy
Author Website: at fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

Charming and light look into Sam's head, seen through his love of climbing trees. A little history of how he came to be fascinated with Buster Keaton and how the people around him reacted. Short, very sweet and perfectly in character.

BENNY AND JOON at IMDB

"Charlie Brown's Christmas tree had obviously been drawn by somebody who hated trees, because there was no such thing as an ugly tree."

09:56 pm Linguistics by Stillane (NC-17)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] stillane
Author Website: fictions and the like
Why this must be read:

Sometimes getting together is the easy part.  It's the learning how to be together that can be tricky.

Rodney knows he was born a verbal creature. It gets him into trouble often enough. With Genii leaders of dubious morality, for one. His first response to any given situation is to speak, and it requires an effort not to. He can’t afford it now, though. He usually gives in, because he’s allowed to. He has a backup system in place at all times, if not of his own design, then in the form of John Sheppard. John saves them, John fixes it, John is there. He’s not willing to change that last fact no matter how much the silence grates. Sometimes a theory shouldn’t be made law.

10:01 pm Insatiable by Caro Dee (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] carodee
Author Website: Caro Dee’s Insatiable Site

Why this must be read: One of the first fics I read in the fandom, Insatiable really explores the limits of a sentinel’s abilities. His abilities, that is, to get off in the most shameless and outrageous of ways on any sensory experience he encounters.

This story is dirty and hot and hilarious and I laughed so many times -- but while you’re distracted and having fun, Caro Dee is quietly turning the tables on you, turning the story around without your even realising. She wields pathos like a stealth weapon with only subtle hints of growing darkness until you suddenly find yourself unsettled and disturbed because you’ve entertained yourself by watching someone’s gradual slide into mental illness. Simply extraordinary writing.

A little taste... )
Though this story can be read on its own, it’s the first part of a series and you’ll want to read them all.

Insatiable

With impeccable timing, I’ll be away next week in a place that probably has no internet access. I’ll make up the lost ground with more recs on my return.
