Hello all, I'll be your rec chauffeur for Band of Brothers this month.

BoB is a cozy little fandom that has luckily been blessed with a higher-than-average percentage of quality fic and I can only hope to shine the spotlight on some of pieces that have struck a particular chord with me. There won't be any specific pairing or character we'll focus on, just good writing. Most of the recs will be slash-oriented, but I'm sure we'll find something for everyone.

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Johnny Martin/Bull Randleman
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nullsechs
Author Website: Nullsechs' Website
Why this must be read:

This is one of those rare fics that quite literally changed the way I felt about a character. Before it I was at best indifferent to Johnny, to be a bit more honest I rather disliked him. But the next time I re-watched the series, I found myself thinking of Nullsechs' take on him and it was as though I were meeting him for the first time.

Set during Replacements, it's a beautifully crafted look at Johnny and the men during the doomed Operation Market-Garden in Holland. The dialogue in particular is achingly pitch-perfect, and with so many accents and personalities that's saying quite a bit.

“Here he is, the man himself! You put up a good fight ‘gainst the ladies there, Bull?”

Bull bowed his head shyly when Johnny sat up. He scrubbed at his face with the back of his hand until nothing was left but a faint pink smudge on his chin. “They took a shinin’ t’me,” he eventually said, the faintest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

“You’d think they’d never seen a hick before,” Johnny announced. A few of the others snickered in agreement. “Least not one his size.”

Fandom: Torchwood
Pairing: Jack/Ianto

Why this must be read:

Written very early in the beginning of the series. Nothing was really known. Written before Cyberwoman. Takes a line from episode one "Everything Changes" and runs with it. More a PWP but still very enjoyable.

Harassment

I'll be driving the Torchwood van this month. Fun since the series will start in the US on BBC America on September 8th and later in the fall in Canada on CBC.

Please send feedback to the writers.

12:58 pm Laid Bare by Rebecca (NC-17)

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Abby/Tony
Author on LJ: [info]blueraccoon

Author Website: rebecca.compromisingpositions.net
Why this must be read: This is the fifth in Rebecca’s “Taking Turns” series, but I think it can be read without the others. (Live a little … read them all. *g*) I’m a Gibbs/DiNozzo shipper, but this pairing works for me in part because the author realizes it’s not the expected pairing (especially long-term) and deals with it up front:

Abby was a little surprised, sometimes, that she and Tony were still...well, sort of together, she supposed. They weren't really exclusive, although other lovers were infrequent--and becoming more so, really. But given his track record, and her prediliction for boytoys, it was kind of unusual for both of them that they were still doing this.

Whatever "this" was.

The other reason this works for me is that, as can by expected from this author, the sex is scorching, but the care and tenderness shown is equally moving. Enjoy being Laid Bare.

02:55 pm A Good Year For The Corn by Beth - R
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: None, Jonathon Kent character study
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

Jonathon Kent was a character I didn't appreciate until he was gone. His sanctimonious heavy handedness with Clark always grated on me and we rarely got a glimpse of some of the choices he made to protect Clark and why he was often so overbearing and restrictive.

This story made me forgive him somewhat for all that heavy handedness because, in the authors own words, a man protects his family above all else.

11:28 pm McKay's Symphony of Two In Ten by Medie (R)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] medie
Author Website: A Curious Mix
Why this must be read:

A wonderful, heartbreaking look at how life could have gone, if only things had been a little different.

After concerts, Rodney craves the connection, the energy which comes with the sharing of the music with the audience, and sex gives it to him. Sex with
John gives it to him. Has ever since that night in Pegasus Hall when he played the concert of his life, playing to a guy in the back row with wild hair and a bored look that pissed him off and urged him on.

11:35 pm Merry Me, Please by Dawnie-7 (G)
Fandom: MISCELLANEOUS JOHNNY DEPP MOVIES (Benny and Joon)
Pairing: Sam/Joon
Author on LJ: not that I know of
Author Website: at fanfiction.net
Why this must be read: It's a sweet and charmingly in character piece about how Sam asks Joon to marry him.

BENNY AND JOON at IMDB

So Sam had permission, he had blessings, and he had the ring. All he needed now was a way of asking. He didn’t want to just come right out and ask, that would be too boring. He wanted something more......special.

11:40 pm Return the Hero by Beduini (R)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Beduini's gossamer pages
Why this must be read: 'Return the Hero' does an excellent job venturing into the mytharc and expanding upon the Biogenesis/Amor Fati episodes. It deals with Mulder's telepathy in a more thorough and convincing manner than the show ever managed. I love the idea so much that in my happy little fantasy world where Carter got it right all the time, this gem of a fic pops up.
