08:06 am Ships Passing by srin (PG-13)
Sorry for the late start - was on holiday. Will be presenting a variety of old skool and new skool recs this month, culled mainly from my recs website. To start, let's mix the two eras together.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Jack Harkness/Sergeant Benton
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] srin
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] a_farther_room

Why this fic must be read: I'm won over by Benton fic alone, but this is also a terrific little story. Jack's spaceship (pre-Empty Child) breaks down in front of UNIT HQ, and he gets just a little bit friendly with the locals. Benton is spot-on perfect, there's a very funny appearance by the Brig ("I can hardly concern myself with every civilian who breaks down in front of – Did you say invisible spaceship?"), and the way the Jack/Benton part plays out had me in joyful hysterics. A great bit of fic for some sorely underrepresented UNIT characters, and a fabulous, unique pairing.

02:40 pm Like Rogue Unicorns, by Nicole_Anell, PG-13
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
Pairing: Baltar/Six
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell

Why this fic must be read: This is the crackiest of crack fics (a favorite genre of mine) and if you like crack fic than the summary alone should grab you: Baltar, Caprica-Six, and their brain-lovers get married and have six children. Three of whom live in their minds. If you don't like crack fic, this one may change your mind. It's hilarious and brilliant and perfect, and there are mind children! How can you resist?

Here, have an excerpt:

04:46 pm My Dinner With Angelique by Linda Cornett (G)
Hi, folks!  I'm [personal profile] theladyrose, and I'll be driving the crack van for Man from UNCLE this September.

Fandom:
THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Angelique/Illya (sort of...but not really)
Author on LJ:
[profile] lcorn
Author Website: Linda Cornett's Fiction Collection
Why this must be read:

When I first stumbled upon Linda Cornett's fanfic site, I basically gobbled up all of her writing in four hours because I couldn't get enough of her work.  Her genre crossovers have already been rec'd here for good reason  - her knack for strong character voices is unmistakable; I'm particularly fond of her Chandleresque detective and Italian chef.  I've been consistently impressed by her realistic female OCs; these are women who have faced the gamut of whatever life throws at them and can damn well take care of themselves, gaining experience without losing their humanity in the process.

This treatment extends to villainesses as well as innocents.  Is there any conceivable situation when we can have a sympathetic view of our fandom's favorite femme fatale, let alone a believable détente between Angelique and Illya?  The emotional stakes have never been so high in this finely calibrated cat and mouse game; by the end, I swear I felt my heart break just a little in a way I had never expected.

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [personal profile] shayheyred[Unknown site tag]
Author Website: Chez Shay

Why this must be read:

I can't think of any story of Shay's I wouldn't recommend (other [community profile] crack_van drivers have thankfully done so on numerous occasions), but I've always had a soft spot for the sly humor in this one.  Like in any other fandom, MFU has a couple of key topics that fans like to debate and creatively address; a couple of these include "How did Napoleon and Illya meet?"; "Is Illya a defector?" and "What the heck happened to the Return movie?!"

And then there are the more nitpicky details that absorb the attention of fans, such as "Are Napoleon's eyes actually hazel or brown?  And if they're brown, are they chocolate or whiskey-colored?"  Shay brilliantly explains how Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin became the man we come to recognize and love at UNCLE.  To tell you any more would be a crime, but at least in America we all have at least one funny "that time when our ancestors went through Ellis Island" story...
