09:35 am We Ought Not Die by Emrin Alexander and Kyanoswolf (PG-13)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] emrinalexander and [livejournal.com profile] kyanoswolf
Author Website: Kyanoswolf's Fan Fiction Site and check Emrin's memories on LJ
Why this must be read: This is an older fic, but one by two authors who haven't been represented here before, and both these authors have written a number of Smallville stories that are worth checking into. In the early days of Smallville, it was easy to see that Martha had a soft spot for Lex. Now, in this future fic, Martha Kent, tired of seeing her "boys" at odds, suggests a way they might be able to work out some of their issues ... without property damage. They try that old-fashioned approach of writing letters, and as a letter-writer myself I really like the epistolary nature of the story. It shows (with many cross-outs) how difficult it sometimes is to say the right thing, and how words are easily taken the wrong way. It's a fun piece with slow progress towards that happy ending, and even better news, there's a recently posted sequel!

10:52 am Say Something Worth Breath by Lyra Sena (NC-17)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lyra_sena
Author Website: palelight
Why this must be read: Oh, those lies. This starts out as a happy enough story with Clark and Lex being together. But there are things they don't say to each other, truths they don't tell, and that proves to be their downfall. Maybe Clark shouldn't have to say it, but Lex needs him to, and that changes everything. It's painful and bitter and a little bit sad, but you can understand how Lex feels. The title, which caught my attention in the first place, really speaks to the heart of this story. Sometimes saying the words is everything.

After that, Lex stopped saying ‘I love you’ ... )

02:34 pm Ashes to Ashes by kellifer_fic (pg13)
Fandom: Stargate SG1
Pairing: Cameron Mitchell/Sam Carter/Daniel Jackson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
Author Website: SG-Master List (See links at top of entry for other fandoms)
Why this must be read:

This story is a slight crossover with the Christian Bale movie "Reign of Fire", borrowing the premise and dropping the SG1 characters into it. I love apocafic, but I tend to be very picky about the kinds of ones I read. But this one...God.

It's the perfect concept, the world went and ended when SG1 wasn't looking. The story is deftly laid out, the characterizations are just there in such a wonderfully understated way. Kel handles them all so perfectly, adding just the right touch to each one that reading them almost hurts.

Oh who am I kidding, this fic is a sucker punch and I LOVE it for that.

04:53 pm Seeds, by C.M. Decarnin (NC-17)
Fandom: Highlander
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] decarnin
Author's website: The Garret

Why this mustbe read: I haven't seen this recced very often, and I think it's because it's overshadowed by [livejournal.com profile] decarnin's epic angst fest, And Hades Followed Him.

This story is, shall we say, much lighter. And shorter. And sunnier! And yet, it still carries a dark undercurrent of sorrow and pain. A sequel to Hades, taking place five years on, Duncan and Methos are living together in Duncan's loft. The fact that they're living in the middle of the city of Seacouver doesn't rain on Methos's sudden desires for a garden (or a woods, or a forest…). An mania for seed catalogs seems tame enough -- but Duncan learns to take even the silliest obsession of his ancient companion very, very seriously. It's a romantic story that hits one of my kinks: acceptance of a lover's… peculiarities.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ:http://joandarck.livejournal.com/
Author Website: http://joandarck.greekedtext.org/
Why this must be read:

The classic going-undercover-and-pretending-they're-gay thing? Like anything else, it can be done, and then it can be done well.

This is well-done, indeed. I like the equally clueless Jim and Blair. Joandarck's got a deft hand.

Fandom: Star Wars Prequels
Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine
Author Website: Current website here.
Why this must be read: In the strange parallel universe of fanfiction, sex is almost always perfect. Everyone's gorgeous, massively endowed and awesome in bed, nobody ever fumbles in a bad way or breaks wind at exactly the wrong moment, and everyone can deep-throat. That's not a bad thing, because we're all here for escapism and hot porn, but sometimes you just want a touch of angsty reality. This fic deals with a scenario of mismatched sexual preferences. The unwilling partner plays along, and as a result both partners are left with more than bruises. It's an uncomfortable read, but the characterization is lovely and rings true throughout.

06:26 pm Falling Slowly, by Susan James (NC-17)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sjames_centre
Author Website: Susan's Gen fiction is archived here and her Slash fiction is archived here.

Why this must be read:

Because it's awesome. Because Susan is an awesome writer. Because it's long and plotty and character rich and awesome.

You know what? Susan doesn't just write Starsky in the first person, she becomes Starsky. Everything she writes in this story becomes the new Starsky canon, and she'll make you believe these guys were boffing each from Day 1.

But don't take my word for it. Read the first three paragraphs and then go on and read the rest. You won't be able to help yourself!

Awesomes! )
