Hi there, guys! I'm Candice, and I'll be your driver in Tamora Pierce's Tortall and Emelan this December. I drove for CSI Vegas a couple years ago and had a grand time, so when small fandoms month rolled around, I couldn't resist the pull. I like weird pairings and minor characters, so you'll be seeing a bunch of that this month, especially since in this fandom at least, the weird stuff tends to be a little higher in quality than the standard vanilla fare. And without further adieu, the month's first fic ... Fandom: TAMORA PIERCE - TORTALL Pairing: Arram Draper (Numair)/Arram Simulacrum Author on LJ: kitty_ryanAuthor Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/~kittyryanWhy this must be read: Right, so, Kitty has a gift for voice and imagery and succinctness that's just lovely and perfect, particularly with the Immortals crew, and this is no exception. Kitty paints us an image of Numair before he was Numair, powerful while he's in the midst of finding his competence and himself at the same time, with friends who aren't really his friends, not in the stick-by-you-forever sense, but who are all right for the time being. And you know what happens in the books and what Tristan and Ozorne do to him and it just makes reading this story hurt underneath the surface. ( Snippet of the Story... )[ link to fic]

Fandom: SLINGS AND ARROWS Pairing: Oliver/Geoffrey Author on LJ: spuffydudsAuthor Website: Fic collection tag on ljWhy this must be read: Fantastic voice, believable characterization, and brilliant structure. Pre-season one, a somewhat drunk and maudlin Oliver tells a jaded bartender the story - for the seventh time - of how he discovered (and fell for, and had his heart broken by) Geoffrey. The bartender can practically tell the story himself by now: "The beautiful, the talented, the young and juicy Geoffrey. All sorts of sonnet-y metaphors. Tragedy ensues." And it ensues in a way that makes a plausible backstory for the series, framed in an engaging flashback device. The allusion in the title (from Oliver's Army, by Elvis Costello) makes me grin, but the grin is gone by the sobering end. Oh, Oliver. ( Excerpt )I Would Rather Be Anywhere Else Than Here Today

Fandom: Prince of Tennis Pairing: Rikkaidai: Yukimura x Sanada Author: lysapadinLength: Two Parts: about 18,000-words complete. Additional related stories can be found in the author's index. Rating: NC17, sex, stated violence. Why this must be read:Prince of Tennis is so easy to translate into AU. Lys ap Adin takes Rikkaidai's top heavies, Yukimura and Sanada, and whips them up into this frothy and intoxicating cup of gangster Zabaglione. Sanada is a successful writer who hates to schmooze, but must in order to sell his books; Yukimura is the fan who makes these dreaded publicity events all worthwhile. Too often in PoT fanfics, Sanada's bluntness becomes raw and coarse. Here it rings pure and true. Pen and Ink.

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt Author on LJ: elfinessyAuthor Website: Elfinessy's Life on Mars Slash FictionWhy this must be read:For my second recommendation, I will continue with the author that most fans find first when searching for Life on Mars fan-fic. In that way, therefore, the fandom wouldn't be if it is, if it were not for elfin. Here elfin has speculated on what would happen when/if Sam woke up. Written between the first and the second series (and therefore is AU for series two) it is in turn endearing and bitter. Sam spends so long in 1973 trying desperately to get home that when he gets his wish, he's not sure that it's what he wants any more. ( Excerpt )Subject to Change

Fandom: TAMORA PIERCE - EMELAN - STREET MAGIC Pairing: gen, Ikrum Author on LJ: lea_hazelAuthor Website: http://www.lea-hazel.net/Why this must be read: Because Lea takes the leader of the Viper Gang and shows us how he is what Briar might have been and makes him into a character worthy of both our sadness and our sympathy. She latches on to that part of what makes Street Magic work so well, the road that might have been taken, and expounds upon it in a truly lovely way. Vidder: Skud Musical artist: Captain Tractor Pairing: None... or maybe orgies. It all depends on how you interpret the dance. Vidder on LJ: damned_colonialVidder's website: The ScriptoriumWhy this vid kicks ass: Muppets! At sea! As pirates! That's pretty much all the sales pitch I needed when I first downloaded this. But then I listened to the song, and watched the lip synching on the chorus (I suspect rather boggle-eyed), and almost did myself permanent damage from laughing so hard. In short, this songvid contains the best use of gratuitous muppet innuendo evah! Poor Kermit, he is so hard done by. Heeeee. *cracks up at own peurile pun* Frigging in the Rigging (scroll down)

Fandom: Samurai Champloo Pairing: gen Author on LJ: springgreen Author Website: n/a Why this must be read: Usually I'm a strictly relationship-fic girl; I see 'gen' and I immediately go on to the next story. The thing about Samurai Champloo fic, however, is that even its gen fic is relationship fic because relationships between Fuu, Mugen, and Jin are so complex (are they friends, potential lovers, allies, enemies?) and yet so simple (family. Whatever else they are, they are family.) that they permeate any story that encompasses the three characters. Crossroads is set immediately post-series, following Fuu as she rebuilds her life and tries to get over the loss of Mugen and Jin by perfecting her mochi. Guess who eventually shows up to mooch free food? A funny, sweet, and ridiculously charming fic. Crossroads

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTSGen with a hint of Jason/Timauthor on LJ: hackthisauthor website: http://www.obsessedmuch.net/dysfunctional/why this must be read:My first rec for Friday Night Lights is this short, lyrical look at the Dillon Panthers relaxing after a grueling practice. The author brilliantly captures the sultry Texas heat and the low-key smolder between Jason Street and Tim Riggins. The dialogue is wonderful and the last line will break your heart a little.
