Welcome aboard for the magical fun ride that the mods and I have dubbed Songvid Oddities. Earlier this year I was trawling through the back catalogue of the Van's songvid recs, the way you do, and suddenly realised that many awesome songvids couldn't easily be recced on the Van, because they don't fit the one-vid-per-rec-set rules. Fortunately, I quickly figured out a solution -- pimping songvids as their own fandom during small-fandom-December. The Van's open-minded mods immediately agreed that this sad lack of, for instance, Get Smart songvids could not go on! So here I am, with a carefully winnowed songvid rec set for your delectation. I know, I know, songvids aren't really a small fandom, no matter how you look at it. However, my agenda this December is to rec songvids that are a) entirely awesome, and b) either come from genuinely small fandoms, or are multi-fandom or some kind of mash-up, as neither of these types of vids can normally be recced. I've roughly divided the set into four sections: small fandom, remixes, constructed reality, and multi-fandom. But enough from me. Let's get into the shiny goodness! Vidder: P. Kosinski and Mary S. Van Deusen Musical artist: Johnny Rivers Pairing: Max/Various Vidder on LJ: Unknown and maidavidsVidder's website: Unknown and My World in Images and PoetryWhy this vid kicks ass: My love for this songvid cannot be adequately textually rendered, but in the name of spreading the love, I will try. First, this is the perfect melding of song and source; after all Maxwell Smart is, was and always will be the epitome of secret agenthood. Second, this show was on the good drugs. Seriously, I'd forgotten how cracked it was, but this songvid has it all, from exploding ping pong balls to cheesy montages, multiple costume changes to fake graves, peel-off faces to umbrella-guns. *waves hands gleefully* If you are not excited by any of this, then I give up. For the rest of you, yeah, this songvid really is just as perfect as it sounds. Clicky clicky on the link immediately for your daily dose of pure joy. Secret Agent ManNote: Two versions are available for download; a really super-big version, and underneath it, a link to a smaller version.

Hi, my name is Andy, and I'll be driving the van for Life on Mars this month. I'm so excited, we're such a small fandom, but we've got some wonderful fic! Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: lozenger8Author Website: Loz's List of FicWhy this must be read:I thought I'd start this journey with my favourite author. Loz is a mighty pillar of the Life on Mars community, tirelessly running the 1973flashfic fortnightly challenge, running both the martianholiday and Ficathon 2007 as well as being a member of the fic-squad on lifein1973 and a co-conspirator of the Archive project. It's amazing that she ever gets time to write anything, let alone write a large body of excellent fic, guaranteed to titillate, educate or merely entertain. This is one of the two pieces that got me really hooked on the fandom (after, obviously, becoming hooked on the show itself). There are a number of dark-fic in the community, in fact we seem to be rather obsessed with the darker side of life in general. This is an AU, set in and around the first series only – Sam has given up and Chris is worried. ( Excerpt )Qu'est ce que c'est

Fandom: Prince of Tennis Pairing: [Rikkaidai] Yagyuu Hiroshi/Niou Masaharu Author: anjenueRating: NC17. Sex, language. Why this is a must-read:It is the best, most effective solution to problems with English grammar that I've ever read. A person would certainly figure out their dominant and subordinate clauses, not to mention their possessive pronouns. Rikkaidai's Yagyuu tutors Niou in English.

Every man at some point in his life is going to lose a battle. He's going to fight and he's going to lose. But what makes him a man, is that in the midst of that battle, he does not lose himself.

Hi, guys! I'll be reccing Diane Duane's Young Wizard series for Small Fandom month. Here, have an overview. Not to be confused with That Other Series about wizards, Diane Duane’s Young Wizards series commenced way back in 1983 with So You Want To Be A Wizard. If you haven't read it, if you haven't heard of it, skip the rest of this and go here to read the first chapter. If you still want to know more, go ahead and click on the cut for my novella-length overview. ( So, you want to know more. A lot more. )

Fandom: FAKE NEWS RPF Pairing: Jon/Stephen Author on LJ: canis_takahari and mackemAuthor Website: canis_takahari's memories and mackem's memoriesWhy this must be read: An excellent first-time fic, with the right amount of nervousness, humor and sweetness. It is a collaborative effort, but you can barely even tell. I'm not a huge Jon/Stephen fan, but I definitely enjoy stories that can sell it to me, and this is one of them. The fic is flocked, so you must join tds_rps to view it. Membership is open. Do You Want To?

Vidder: Danvers Musical artist: Cher Pairing: Sunny/Sameer Vidder on LJ: svendraVidder's website: thingologyWhy this vid kicks ass: My first reaction upon seeing this songvid was, "They make gay Bollywood movies? Since when? And why did nobody tell me?" Ah, how innocent I was back then, having not yet realised quite how much interpretation a clever vidder could work into a songvid. And, oh, how well Danvers did her job in this one. "A Different Kind of Love", with its singing/dancing/pratfalling heroes, never fails to make me smile and smile. I still haven't seen the original movie this vid was made from, but I live under the happy delusion that Mujhse Shaadi Karogi must have one of the slashiest, not to mention funniest, friendship romances ever depicted on film. Go on, click the link and join me in this happy place. A Different Kind of Love (scroll down)

Five thousand words and more time than I thought this would take later, and the overview is done. (Unbeta'd, though, so I'll be editing it for a while yet.)The whole huge thing that is the overview is below the cut. Also, huge mega mondo spoilers for absolutely every word Tamora Pierce has ever set to paper. ( Read More... )

Imagine a cross between The Avengers and The Professionals, starring two bisexual billionaires. No, that's not canon. I try again. Champagne. Chandeliers. Discothèques. Aston Martins and Ferraris. Tony Curtis and Roger Moore. Fighting crime for personal redemption -- and kicks, baby. Lazy banter, zingy music, fistfights and car chases. What one reviewer called "the best bad series ever made" and what the official amazon.co.uk description admits "may well be the most blatantly homoerotic of all the buddy television pairings ... that ran over the screen in the 70s." If all that sounds like your thing, it probably is. The premise: ( 'You think I'm gonna risk my life... or his?' )The characters: ( 'Two olives. That way, you see, they can gently bounce up against each other.' )The central pairing which is basically also the story arc: ( 'What are you so worried about me for?' 'Perhaps I'd rather hate you alive than dead?' )The fic and the fandom: ( 'I'm telling you, I'm straight. All I'm after is a holiday.' 'Yes, well, it looks like someone wanted to make it permanent.' )Other resources: ( 'And the sun shines down on love...' )

Fandom: DRESDEN FILES (TV) Pairing: Harry/Murphy-ish Author on LJ: awanderingbardAuthor Website: Dresden Files tagged items at author's LJWhy this must be read:The author absolutely nails the character voices and the great rapport that Harry and Murphy share. Murphy stops by Harry's place on her way home from the Policeman's Ball to drop off his paycheck, and she's feeling a little glum so he does some cheering. I love how their friendship is captured here with warmth, good-natured teasing, and a bit of flirtation. This one will leave you smiling from start to finish. "Listen, it is entirely against the laws of nature that you put on that dress and don't get to dance," I insisted, dragging her to the living room. "Seriously. We're talking hurricanes, earthquakes, maybe even zombies. Do you want to start a zombie uprising, Murphy?"
She laughed again. "No. I guess not." Pas de Deux

Hiya! I'm kaydee, and I'll be your History Boys driver this month. I'm particularly a Posner/Scripps fan, but really, I'll read pretty much anything, slash or gen or even het (not so common in this fandom), and I'll do my best to offer a wide range of fics for you all. Fandom: THE HISTORY BOYS Pairing: Dakin/Irwin Author on LJ: rilla_Author Website: unknown Why this must be read: I thought it would be best to start with the very first fic I read in this fandom -- the fic that convinced me to stick around. This one turned up in last year's yuletide, and hooked me immediately. The scenario is a fairly common one in this fandom: Dakin and Irwin finally get that drink. But this fic stands out because it's not just about that delayed gratification -- it's a vibrant kaleidoscope surrounding Lockwood's funeral and examining these peoples' lives, ten years down the line. Dakin and Irwin are both wonderfully characterized, and we also get good hard looks at Scripps, Posner, Mrs. Lintott, and how their lives are all still somehow interwoven a decade later. And yeah, Dakin and Irwin get that drink, and maybe something more, and it all comes together so achingly wonderfully. ( excerpt )Somewhere, One Day
