12:24 am Far Side by giving_ground [R]
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Pairing: [Rikkaidai] Yagyuu Hiroshi/Niou Masaharu
Author: [livejournal.com profile] giving_ground
Website: [livejournal.com profile] etchedinclouds
Rating: [R] Sex, violence

Why this fic must be read:

Rikkaidai's characters lend themselves surprisingly well to AU scenarios where they are assassins and yakuza, as opposed to athletes determined to win almost at any cost and certainly enough to tip them into moral ambiguity. [livejournal.com profile] giving_ground hones into the dark!fic side of PoT and serves up some gritty sci-fi noir.

02:03 am the kings and queens of England by solvent90 (R)
Fandom: THE HISTORY BOYS
Pairing: Dakin/Posner
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] solvent90
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

This is a hard little fic to describe. Some things just stick in your head, and you'll never forget them. Dakin remembers some history. It's the insignificant details he remembers, the things that don't matter, but they keep coming back to him and becoming meaningful through his memory of them. [livejournal.com profile] solvent90 gives us a harsher look at Dakin growing up than we usually find in fics, and how Posner really matures more in contrast. And when they run into each other at last years later, it's both painful and cathartic. Just a lovely piece with a bit of bite to it.

10:55 am Absolution by Letrice (PG-13)
Fandom: CRIMINAL MINDS
Pairing: Gideon/Hotch
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] letrice
Author Website: None that I could find
Why this must be read:

Because it's the aftermath of Boston, where Gideon's decision resulted in the deaths of his co-workers. This picks up where Gideon is about to break, and it's marvelous. Only slightly slashy. Very satisfying.

10:56 am The Persistence of Memory AND Darkness From Cold by Rhysenn (PG-13)
Fandom: CRIMINAL MINDS
Pairing: Reid/Hotch, Reid/m
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iscaris
Author Website: Magical Intrigue
Why this must be read:

The first story, The Persistence of Memory delves into the aftermath of the episode LDSK, when Reid and Hotch are briefly taken captive by the titular long distance serial killer. In order to get the killer off his game, Hotch berates Reid, and beats him up. Reid says he's okay at the end (he actually says Hotch kicks like a nine-year old girl ♥), but this story presents angst and regret and hits several kinks of mine: the wallow, the desire to keep pressing forward, and the need to repair broken relationships.

The second story gives more reasons and explanations for Reid's reactions: the power of the ex who was really, really wrong for him. With attendant comforting from someone who might be right.

Fandom: CRIMINAL MINDS
Pairing: none. Well. Hotch/Haley – canon marriage for the win!
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] copperchimes
Author Website: None I could find
Why this must be read:

A different take on the aftermath of LDSK, focusing on Hotch and history and violence. I love this story for showing me how Hotch attempts to leave all the nightmares behind once he arrives home, and making clear how big a struggle that is.

11:15 am Songvid Oddities: James Bond - Holy Egoism of Genius
Vidder: Permetaform
Musical artist: Art of Noise, featuring John Hurt
Pairing: None
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] permetaform
Vidder's website: PerMetaForm
Why this vid kicks ass: Technically, this isn't a multi-fandom songvid, in that all the source footage comes from the James Bond movies. But given the nature of James Bond movies, I find it boggling, and somewhat humbling, that anyone has managed to make a songvid this beautiful and insightful out of it. See, Permetaform takes what is an almost-impossible song to vid, and then uses all those impossible elements to highlight just how totally improbable and exciting and cinematic James Bond really is. God, I love this songvid. It's just so good.

ETA: The link below now goes directly to the songvid's announcement page, which does seem to work. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Fandom: DRESDEN FILES (TV)
Pairing: Harry/Murphy-ish (friendship, but could be read as more)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] guardian_chaos
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

Fact: Harry Dresden gets his ass kicked in the series. A lot. It's one of the hazards of fighting monsters and other such villainous beings. In this story, Harry has such a day, and it only goes from bad to worse when he gets home to find his fridge has finally kicked it. But then Murphy comes by and things look up. The author has Bob's voice nailed and the rapport between Harry and Murphy is perfect. It's a heartwarming story that definitely delivers on holiday spirit and friendship.
Harry raised an eyebrow, but chuckled anyway. “You’re an odd thing, lady.”

“Says the wizard known to talk to the decorated, life-sized skull he carries around in his bag.”

Author on LJ: unknown

Why this must be read:

This is definitely the fandom for spine-tingling, edge-of-your seat adventure. In this classic, Johnny and the guys participate in a wilderness training exercise, and find themselves fighting to survive instead.

Rated PG for some grusome descriptions and flashbacks, plus a heart-rending story of pain and survival.

06:02 pm Porcelina of the Vast Oceans by Jamie (NC-17)
Fandom: FAKE NEWS RPF
Pairing: Jon/Anderson
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jamie_dakin
Why this must be read:

Anderson returns home from Hurricane Katrina. Jon and Andy are having an affair and Jon makes it quite clear that they're just that. But after Katrina, Anderson can't help but think and desire to be more. The anger and frustration Andy experienced makes him yearn for something real. The language is incredibly beautiful and the emotions and tension can be felt through the screen.

Fandom: THE PERSUADERS!
Pairing: Lord Brett Sinclair/Danny Wilde
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] keiko_kirin
Author Website: keikotorium
Why this must be read:

Bonus rec for the week: I'm sorry to repeat authors, but I couldn't pass this up, because it's so classic to me. It's an episode tag for "Greensleeves" (and will make more sense if you've seen that), which puts it at a sort of middle phase of Danny and Brett's friendship, in which they're already constant companions but still have a lot to discover about each other's lives and pasts. And what about that everpresent flirtatious tension: is it all just a joke or could something happen at any moment?

This first-time fic plays off that dynamic perfectly, and the descriptions and voices are so good it's hard to believe this wasn't really part of the episode. Yummy, funny – yay!

10:49 pm Jump, by Ashura; PG
Fandom: YOUNG WIZARDS
Pairing: Nita/Kit, Tom/Carl
Author: [livejournal.com profile] ashkitty
Author Website: Arcadia
Why this MUST be read: This fic is a total classic - I think so, anyway. It was written before Alone came out, and one of my favourite things about it is how well it anticipates - you know that scene in Alone where Kit bitches to Tom and Carl about fighting with Nita? This fic is basically that scene with the delicious het and slashy subtext put into the actual text. It's an ollllld favourite of mine, and I adore the way it positions Tom and Carl, and Nita and Kit.

Spoilers for A Wizard's Dilemma.
