06:17 am Them's the Breaks by anjenue [R]
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Pairing: [Rokkaku] Amane "Davide" Hikaru/Kurobane "Bane" Harukaze
Author: [livejournal.com profile] anjenue
Rating: [R] underage warning.

Why this fic must be read:

A light-as-air piece about bad puns and pickup lines, how an injury can sideline more than a spot on the team, and the Japanese style of confession. This romance won't exactly crush the brain under portent and monumental meaning, but it isn't sticky sweet either. The tone is breezy and fun, and the big moment of discovery generates an amazing amount of heat for all its casual approach.

Them's the Breaks.

Why this must be read:
Jin and Mugen are keeping watch over Fuu when her yukata slips open, revealing her breast. Of course, Mugen immediately starts staring, and of course, Jin does his best not to look. Instead, he cleans his sword and thinks and (unsurprisingly considering the situation) his thoughts revolve around Fuu, what she means to him and Mugen, and what would happen to her when their adventure is done. A sweet vignette that illustrates the unspoken affection Jin and Mugen have for Fuu.

10:10 am Songvid Oddities: Joe Flanigan Multi-fandom - Atlantis Royale
Vidder: Starrylizard
Musical artist: Monty Norman, John Barry, David Arnold, Nicholas Dodd
Pairing: Various
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] starrylizard
Vidder's website: Starrylizard's fannish stuff
Why this vid kicks ass: My previous rec was all about looking at the James Bond canon in a new light, whereas this one is about creating an expectation of Bond canon without actually using any Bond footage. I love the clever play of generic expectation and intertextuality in this: the stupid gadgets; the kick-ass action; the womanising; the hokey bad guys; the explosions; the smirky, deadly James Bondness of JFlan, which is weirdly perfect; and the way Starrylizard has edited it all to the Bond theme. *happy sigh*

Apart from all of that, there's just the right whiff of naffness to 'Atlantis Royale,' and I don't know how Starrylizard managed it, but it makes this so perfectly, hilariously Bond.

10:14 am Preludes and Nocturnes and Other Arrangements by thimpressionist (NC-17)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt/Annie Cartwright
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thimpressionist
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

On to, now, another smoking hot fic just to prove that there are some out there. [livejournal.com profile] thimpressionist uses musical terminology to take you through the coming together (and the *coming together*, heh, heh, heh) of one of the fandom's more 'popular' threesomes.

This fic has superbly vivid imagery and luscious use of words. And is also very, very hot.

11:04 am Note How She Quotes The Leaves by inlovewithnight (PG)
Fandom: SLINGS AND ARROWS

Author Website: Exaggeration and Blank Verse
Why this must be read: A surprisingly complex and real Ellen, and a good ensemble feel.

This thoughtful story takes a look at Ellen and Oliver shortly before S1. Geoffrey is an invisible presence between the two of them as they warily pace around each other and their shared history. Like many stories in this fandom, it's set around the staging of one of Shakespeare's plays: in this case, Titus Andronicus, which serves as apt metaphor. Which makes this story sound terribly heavy, but just as Shakespeare's tragedies have their fools, this story has Richard and Claire - two characters who are (unfortunately, IMHO!) rarely seen in fic, and who are spot-on here.

01:19 pm The Complete, Whole, and True Story of Yesterday by Bri (PG-13)
Fandom: FAKE NEWS RPF
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pomegranate_red
Author Website: Word Cuisine
Why this must be read:

In a ficlet, Bri captures the entire history of Stephen, Paul and Amy. It's so poetic and I just adore how she describes little details and idiosyncrasies of each person that is minimally featured in interviews. This is the story of Stephen, Paul and Amy, how they work and just enjoying each other's company, if only for a little while.

03:48 pm Wimsey and I, by azdak (PG)
Fandom: Lord Peter Wimsey
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] azdak
Why this must be read: If you’ve ever read Lord Peter talking about Denver’s marvelous grass and wondered for a moment just exactly what he was referring to, this is the fic for you. It’s Sayers meets Withnail and I, and it’s wonderfully funny, with some great dialogue for Wimsey and Parker. (You don’t need to have seen W&I to enjoy it; I haven’t.)

07:11 pm Love Like Rain by boundary (pg)
Fandom: TWILIGHT
Pairing: Jasper/Alice
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] boundary
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: There is a very tiny amount of Jasper/Alice fiction in thhe Twilight fandom, and even a smaller amount of those are actually good. This is one of the rare good ones. The fic shows a series of small, quiet moments between the two of them over the course of their relationship, and it's nothing short of lovely. Quietly cute and the characterization is wonderful.

Why this must be read: Even if you absolutely despise Jacob/Bella in the series and think that any fic that doesn't include Edward/Bella is blasphemous, you really can't deny how truly awesome this story is. Elyssa does a really great job of telling this story. The prose, the characterization, the angst, everything is wonderful. I adore this story to death.
