12:12 am How Many Robins?, by Akablonded (G)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: gen, but could be seen as preslash Jim/Blair
Length: short
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Akablonded at 852 Prospect
Why this must be read:

This is a delicate little story to read for Memorial Day. Jim visits a comrade from earlier times. One he knew as an eager young kid with big expressive eyes. Back before he met Blair, back when he was still an aggressive, gung-ho, spit-and-polish captain in the Army.

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: Chris Larabee/Vin Tanner
Length: ~8500
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website:
 http://www.assignations.org/mkent/
Why this must be read:

This story is a little different then the other stories I've recced . This is more angsty, where Chris makes a stupid decision while on an op that not only really pisses off his team, but makes Vin re-evaluate their relationship. Megan writes wonderfully from Chris's POV as he begins to understand how a decision that made sense to him, upset Vin and his team so badly--and as he realizes just how upset they are.

"Chris." Buck spoke softly, but with enough intensity to break Chris's rhythm. "Would you have let me take that walk?"

He knew the answer. They both did. But he watched Chris's mouth work, watched him try to voice the lie that would let him maintain the moral high ground in all this. No fucking way in hell would Chris let one of his men walk into a nutcase's gunsight. Not because the boy didn't matter, or the amount of prime Denver real estate she might have flattened. Because it was a losing proposition, either way. They'd been more than lucky; they'd been truly blessed to save that little boy.

"I--"

Buck finally took pity on him. "You used your seniority. You made a decision that you wouldn't have if she'd wanted the hide of anyone else on the planet. Most of all, you rode roughshod over all of us. You have a group of men who'd follow you to hell on nothing more than your say-so. By your actions, you as much as told them that their opinions weren't worth shit, and their concern--hell, their love--for you wasn't worth much more.

"Now, some of them are gonna get over that easier than others. But Vin-- Well, ole Vin he don't give up on much. You pushed him pretty hard. He had to face giving you up, one way or the other. I don't think he liked where he ended up."

01:15 am Live Journal Elections
Hey all, we've made a point of keeping this community on-topic over the last 4+ years, however I think the current situation with the Live Journal Advisory Board elections is worth mentioning here, and relevant to all of us.

A few days ago, there was a flurry of discussion in [candidate] [livejournal.com profile] jameth's journal, trying to figure out how they could get more votes. [livejournal.com profile] brendan (of [livejournal.com profile] ohnotheydidnt which has at least 50,000 members) was brought up. Jameth asked "omg how can we get ontd," qweerdo went to Brenden's friends only journal and begged, and today Brenden came through.

Earlier this evening, he posted a very strong, very cyber-loud endorsement, and since that post - just a few hours ago - Jameth's gone from 17% of the vote to 20.4% (growing rapidly) of the vote because Brenden has made sure they know that "SOME LAME ASS HARRY POTTER FANDOM DORK IS IN THE LEAD."

[livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion has compiled a comprehensive list of ways in which Jameth has based his campaign upon attacking fandom's place on livejournal in this post. He has shown that he has no respect for fandom as a voting body, does not understand the issues fandom is facing in this election, and is willing to play up negative fandom stereotyping in order to gain votes.

Please CAST YOUR VOTE for one of the fandom candidates: [livejournal.com profile] legomymalfoy, [livejournal.com profile] rm, or [livejournal.com profile] vichan. More info on all three found here.

02:01 pm Summer Vacation by Enigmaticblue PG-13
Sorry for going AWOL there. To make up for it, three recs today!

Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series
Pairing: BuffyWesley
Author on LJ: [profile] enigmaticblues
Author Website: Here
Why this must be read: I want to really say because there is a shortage of good Buffy/Wesley out there, but it's also a good damn story. After the events of season four, Buffy goes to LA and meets up with a very changed Wesley. She realizes people can change. They work together and really just generally learn to like each other. It's more of a friendship story, but I think it has a lot of potential for more, especially at the end. I would dance with joy if Enigmaticblue decided to write more of this pair.

02:02 pm Nontraditional by Lostgirlslair R
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series
Pairing: Wesley/Xander
Author on LJ:[profile] lostgirlslair
Author Website: none that I can find, see her LJ memories
Why this must be read: Wesley/Xander is such a hard pairing to find. So anytime I run across a story with them, I read it. When I find a good story with them, I recommend it. They both have a lot in common (see icon) but this story also highlights the things that make them unique. It's Thanksgiving, a traditional American holiday. But they go about celebrating it via very non-traditional means. It's a very hot, sweet story.

Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: Dawn/Ethan
Author on LJ: [personal profile] antennapedia
Author Website: Antennapedia
Why this must be read: I've already waxed poetic about Antenna's Ethan so I'll just get on to the story. I would have, at one point, said I'd never read Dawn/Ethan because it never really appealed to me. But, I trust Antenna and she doesn't disappoint. This is part of a larger story arc, but I
think it stands alone very well.  Dawn goes looking for a job and finds one in a bookstore run by Ethan. Even when she finds out who he really is, she stays and doesn't tell Buffy. Together they get to the heart of what it means for Dawn to be "The Key". I was never satisfied with the way the show just dropped this aspect of who Dawn is and this story provides a really intriguing answer. If you'd never thought about this pairing, I really suggest this story.

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 2,300 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] racric

Why this must be read:

This is one of my favorites of Rae's stories, because they act like real boys, because it's beautiful, and it makes you feel like summertime. Because it's smokin' hot.

Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Jack/Kathy Swanson
Length: 2813 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wired_lizard

Why this must be read:

Simply put, Jack and Kathy Swanson (the beautiful detective from They Keep Killing Suzie) are just smokin' hot together. The BDSM in the story works so very well, keeping its focus on the characters.

05:34 pm Brothers in Time - Old West series, by Arianna (G)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Gen
Length: Long
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Starfox's Mansion
Why this must be read:

Arianna is one of the most dependable and prolific authors in The Sentinel fandom and, bless her, she's still delivering compelling stories. Her most recent is part of an Old West arc in her Brothers in Time series, in which Jim and Blair are linked souls who are fated to come together as they are reborn in different times.

Arianna's stories have a great sense of time and place as well as character. In 'Bitterwood Creek' Blair is a young doctor traveling West who stops at a town in desperate need of his skills. There he meets Jim, a disillusioned Army Captain who gets hired to be the town's sheriff. As their friendship develops and they become integrated into the fabric of the town, they discover their powers as Sentinel and Guide. The stories ramble, including exciting action as well as the quieter details of life in a frontier town. Both entertain the reader. The perils and problems they face are realistic and the resolutions aren't always simple or happy.

I hope Arianna will continue to write stories in the Old West series, and to develop new AU's in Brothers in Time (which currently include tales in the ancient world, the American Revolution, and the future in addition to the Old West).

Hi again! Sorry about the giant gap in life, I was out of the country and when I got back it felt like years had passed. But I'm back now! Ahoy.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Martha/Romana
Length: ~2740
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lizbee
Author Website: Fic tag
Why this must be read:

I don't actually like femslash much these days, which just attests to how awesome this fic is. I also don't know much about old!Who beyond my intense readings of TARDIS wiki (which, granted, were intense), so it also attests to how awesome this fic is that I was able to love it so much without ever actually seeing Romana on screen.

So, yes, this fic is awesome, full of time irregularities and beautiful prose. It's for everyone of every ship -- because, really, it's wacky ships like this that get me and make me love a fandom, not what a fandom can do with the more canon ships.
