Fandom: POPSLASH Pairing: JC/Justin Length: 3,050 Author on LJ: tsammAuthor Website: http://boudicca.com/unaware/beth.htmlWhy this must be read: The Message is is an AU with JC and Justin as professional tennis players. What I love about it is all the parallels Bethann has drawn between their current and imaginary careers and relationships, and can only imagine how much thought has gone into planning it all. I always notice a couple of more with each reread! They're everywhere, from the details (Justin being the "Nike boy", JC having a pregame ritual) to the big picture (the live in the public eye and are set up as rivals, but have a personal history). I think this is one of the best crafted popslash AUs I've read. the message

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Jason Todd. Implied Batman/Superman Length: one-shot Author on LJ: soda_and_capes Author Website: N/A Why this must be read:This actually has another story or two that takes place in the same "verse," and they are equally good, but I'm reccing this first part of the story, because it is truly wonderful all by itself and is a self-contained piece. This story takes the sweet little Jason White of Superman Returns and molds him into the angry, hurt second Robin in Batman's life. And it does it convincingly, effortlessly molding Superman Returns canon, Batman Begins canon, and comics canon. The Clark here is the distant alien father from Superman Returns, the Batman is Begins Batman with extra edges that time will naturally give him, and the Jason is the Jason from the scene where he threw the piano across the room in a fit of anger/protection/fear magnified times a hundred. Hi all! I'm Zoe, your Friday Night Lights driver this month. I'm a bit late to this party, but better late than never, right? Fandom: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Pairing: Gen; Jason Street-centric; mentions of past Tim/Lyla Length: 2600 words Author on LJ: oxoniensisAuthor Website: Grooves as SpiralsWhy this must be read: ...because it's an absolutely pitch-perfect look at Jason Street, dealing with his accident, the aftermath of Tim and Lyla, and the landscape of his world shifting around him in the wake of his injury. It's the best characterisation of Season 1 Jason that I've read. It's like there's this huge ravine or something between them, the Grand frigging Canyon, him on one side, Lyla and Riggins and everything that used to make him happy on the other. I can no more cross this room than Zeno's arrow

Hi! I'm notapoet and I'll be bringing you Rent fic this month! It's a fandom very near and dear to me, and I'll try to do it justice :) Fandom: Rent Pairing: Gen Length: About 6000 Author Website: Profile on FF.NetWhy this must be read: I’m reccing this first for several reasons. First of all, this was the first Rent fic I read, so it has a bit of sentimental value. Second, it’s a fabulous fic. It is inspired by the poetry of Paul Monette. More specifically, the poetry he wrote following the death of his lover, Roger. The story itself is Mark watching as Roger gets sicker, and Roger watching Mark. It captures their friendship so well, and is a heartbreaking depiction of Roger's downward spiral. Love Alone

Fandom: BANDOM (My Chemical Romance/Panic at the Disco) Pairing: Bob Bryar/Jon Walker Length: 3,383 words Author on LJ: sinsenseAuthor Website: Sinsense's fic tag on LJWhy this must be read: Apart from my mild compulsion to complete the triangle of inter-band crossover pairings with something in the MCR/PatD line, this story presents a really interesting look at two of the quieter members of their respective bands. There's even less canon support for this pairing than for the last one I recced, but Bob and Jon are the lone Chicago natives of their respective bands, and this story catches the two of them in their hometown--Jon between tours, Bob forced by injuries to stay behind while his band goes on without him. The story centers on photographs, and like them, it captures a moment between these two characters. ( Read more... )Blinkered

Fandom: Rent Pairing: Mentions of Benny/Allison, pre-Roger/April, Maureen/random chick. Author on LJ: das_kabinett Why this must be read: Set two years before Rent begins. Back when Benny, Collins, Mark, and Roger all lived in the loft, before Maureen, April, and Benny becoming an ass. Basically, Mark has to go back home for his sister’s wedding. The main reason I love this story is because of the well-written relationships. There’s flawless banter that makes me laugh each time I read it. You can see Mark, Roger, Benny, and Collins' friendship, even though there are hints of what’s to come. They're roommates who steal each other's food and borrow clothes without asking. Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Gen Length: 3900 words. Author on LJ: bistokidsAuthor Website: Unknown Why this must be read: bistokids is another one of my very favourite Life on Mars writers. She completely nails the character voices every time, has wonderful banter, a great vocabulary and just lovely humorous or thought provoking stories. This could quite easily be a deleted sequence within the series and it makes me grin just thinking about it. There is a slashy Sam/Gene subtext, but no more than in the actual show and there are some killer lines. It works on a simple premise; what happens when Sam decides he, Gene, Ray and Chris need to 'get fit'? ( Excerpt )Fitness First
