Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Pairing: None. Jack centric. Length: about 30,000 words and counting Author on LJ: sharklady35Why this must be read:These stories concentrate on Jack post-Fountain Of Youth and follows him on an uneven path through subsequent history. Jack, being Jack, can't help but get a tad *involved* in the various scenarious that have shaped our present--My personal favourite in these vignettes is Jack's meeting with another infamous Jack. Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Pairing: None. Jack centric. Length: about 3,000 words Author on LJ: this_weirdnessWhy this must be read:This is a beautifully written piece with a 'future' Jack meeting someone one wouldn't expect. While there have been many of this genre written badly over the decades, this_weirdness has the innate skill to turn that expectation on its head and create a story that is both literary and thought-provoking. Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Pairing: Jack the Monkey. Length: about 3,000 words Author: Dr. Sugar Why this must be read:A Jack the Monkey centered fic that not only explains his origins, but also has his POV. Lovely little story with thoughtful descriptions and a logical explanation of Jack's closeness to Barbossa. It's interesting to see how his thieving ways were present very early on in his life :P. A very cute story, and well worth a read: The Origin Of Jack

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Title:A Pirate's Life For Me Pairing: None. Jack, Gibbs Length: about 2,000 words Author: mamazanoWhy this must be read: mamazano has a wonderful handle on Gibb's speech, a feat not easily achieved. The banter between him and Jack is spot on, and the subject of sea and women and how the two don't easily mix is as close to a canon offscreen moment between the two as one could hope for. The author has a highly poetic style, and this translates well in PoTC fanfiction. A Pirate's Life For Me

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: none Length: 2,800+ words Author on LJ: rivendellroseAuthor Website: list of ficsWhy this must be read: River and the crew celebrate the Chinese Day of the Dead. River, as usual, is incredibly perceptive and sensitive to the matter of ghosts, and remembrance of the dead and such. Very touching story, great River voice. Clear Brightness

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: Zoe/Wash, gen Length: 11k Author on LJ: unknown Author Website:unknown Why this must be read: I am a sucker for good post Serenity pregnant!Zoe fic, and this fic is a terrific example of the genre. It shows Zoe's slow healing from death through the growth of a new life. Oh, and River and Simon do the delivery, that was just awesome, having River guarding the door of the delivery room. Great job managing the crew's reactions to Zoe. Mal is terrified, at first, scared out of his skin by his first mate suddenly eating for two. Kaylee fusses like no one has ever fussed. Jayne is protective and enthusiastic. Inara blanches when Zoe first tells her and Zoe laughs, immediately understanding -- sex, of course, being natural and easy for a Companion to discuss; pregnancy being an outcome to be avoided at all costs. Inara recovers and laughs too, and then becomes immensely useful, turning up all kinds of women's lore about the different kinds of morning sickness and what will lessen each.
River smiles dreamily when Zoe tells her, and reaches down behind the flight console to retrieve a package, which she hands over. Zoe opens it with raised eyebrows. Inside is a soft wool blanket. Unfurled, it is a collection of earth-coloured squares, each with a different dinosaur in the middle. Zoe finds herself unable to speak.
"You're welcome," River says, and bends at the waist to kiss Zoe's belly, graceful as a flower. Good, in the Latin

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape Length: ~ 14,600 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Medea Nevermore on Snarry.Net Why this must be read: I love the stories where Harry eases into a better relationship with Snape and other syltherins like Malfoy. While it obviously isn't canon, I can honestly see the chance for friendship and maybe more between them, especially since Harry is not completely a gryffindor. This story is beautiful in the way it unfolds between Harry and Severus, slowly in a very believable way. "Sir, I think we need to talk."
"Go away, Mr. Potter. You've done enough damage as it is." Harry was surprised. He had expected Snape, when faced with his presence, to pretend nothing had happened, or to retreat behind his wall of snide remarks and icy demeanor. He hadn't expected the pain he saw in the Professor's face. No, if he would do this, he would address the man he loved correctly.
"Severus." Harry's soft voice caught Snape's attention. "I didn't kiss you to hurt you. Nor did I kiss you to embarrass you, or for any prank, joke or gag. I kissed you because I wanted to. I've wanted to for months now."
Severus looked in his eyes, and for the first time, Harry saw the sheer need in the man he had once hated. He saw a need for love, for passion, for touch. The same need lived constantly within the Boy Who Lived. A Question of Circumstances

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam/Annie Length: 3148 words Author on LJ: flecaliciousAuthor Website: lovingthevolumeWhy this must be read:This story was originally posted for the Life on Mars Ficathon in 2007 to a prompt I gave. It far exceeded my expectations. This is a deeply unsettling and yet hopeful story about Sam searching for answers in a post-apocalyptic world. ( Excerpt )The Voice

Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully Length: vignette Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Sarah Segretti's The Little Things Why this must be read: I found the resolution of the William arc to be so heartrending that I resisted even watching the episode for the longest time. In fact, I resisted season nine in its entirety. Those DVDs sat in their box unopened, their owner sticking to her sworn path of "Deny Everything." When I finally broke down and watched the episode, I was shocked at the cruelty of the writers toward Scully. I avoid babyfic for this reason. It just makes me sad, because I want to believe in a happy ending for the perfect little family that we got to view so briefly at the end of season eight. I want to believe and I can't. It didn't happen, something else did, something unimaginable to me, as a mother. In "Belmont, Ohio," Sarah Segretti lets me envision an ending to The X-Files that isn't quite as sad, quite as hopeless, quite as heartless, as the one we were left with at the end of "The Truth." Although she wrote this before season nine aired, it is not as bleak as it must have appeared when first posted. It is a happy ending, by comparison, and when I read it, for just a little while, I let myself believe. Belmont, Ohio, 3:36P.M.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: None Length: 2260 words Author on LJ: eponymous_roseAuthor Website: eponymous_rose's fics on TeaspoonWhy this must be read:This is four short stories that are all different but all fit together. They're also all slightly differently themed. Autumn has an ending that leaves a lump in your throat and then to counteract it winter has the Doctor and Romana with one of their usual arguments. It's easy to tell there's a lot more going on than what's said in these. ( Excerpt )Le quattro stagioni (The Four Seasons)
