04:52 am The Match and Bullet Trick by drworm (G)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: gen or pre-slash Napoleon/Illya, depending on how you read it
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] drworm
Why it should be read: Don't be fooled by the rating - this may be the most authentic, noir season 1 Napoleon in fiction I've ever read. This is [livejournal.com profile] drworm's first story in the fandom but I sincerely hope he writes more because he's perfectly distilled the essence of UNCLE NY's CEA into this intense ficlet. The laconic narrative is taught with the sharp, visceral reality of the prolonged agony and boredom of a nighttime stakeout; you can see how Napoleon's flamboyantly devil may care tendencies became fully-fledged. Whether Napoleon's hooked on the rush of continually giving death the finger, fears going soft and dull in the routine stillness or travels between these two is up for the reader to ponder. Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE/NCIS
Pairing: gen, with hints of Napoleon/Illya
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] graphiteslog
Why it should be read:

Oops, this was meant as my 3rd crossover day rec. Er, to be honest I've never seen a full episode of NCIS, but I was immediately drawn into this Ducky as Illya Kuryakin fic because [livejournal.com profile] graphiteslog beautifully illustrates the transformations necessary in the life cycle of a spy, the psychological death of sorts in order to enter a new life. But heck, don't we all want to know what happened to our spy guys after the series' end (or even the Return movie)? It's fascinating to see Kate as the Innocent in discovering the past life of a man preserved in things left behind as well as the memories of those still present.

05:55 am The Flashpoint of Ice by myrebelcat (G)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] myrebelcat
Why it should be read:

I know I haven't rec'd too many first time/early in the partnership stories here as most of mine have been previously rec'd, but this one simply must be read. There are a number of authors whose first (or second) stories in this fandom leave me in total awe of their superb, seemingly effortless writing ability - enter [livejournal.com profile] myrebelcat of the hilarious the Fangirls from CanUNCLE (which is co-authored by the equally delightful [livejournal.com profile] elizabethhelena, who has been previously rec'd here). Her stories read like unfilmed episodes or outtakes that tragically ended up on the cutting room floor; she balances the characters' dry humor and insightfully observed quirks with genuine tension and suspense. Despite the seemingly easy banter, these are consummate professionals whose words are as much of a tool of the trade as their explosives. For our spy guys, shared duress and a sense of wicked humor forges bonds meant to last.

01:10 pm Check Yes Or No, by Simple Man (G)
Fandom: HOUSE MD
Pairing: House/Foreman
Length: 900 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] simple__man
Author Website: Simple Man's fics tag.
Why this must be read:

This is a cute little piece that I love for House's seduction technique. It's perfect from Foreman's point of view: not only is it in character for House, but Foreman's reaction is priceless. Short, funny, and to the point, this is the kind of interaction I love for House/Foreman.

As expected, House appears in the doorway, shit-eating grin firmly in place. "How do you know I'm up to something?" His tone could not be more guilty.

"You're breathing," Foreman retorts.

02:31 pm The Spyware Affair by Batagur (PG-13)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: slash, Napoleon/Illya and OMCs Cooper/Duncan
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] soulsistahslash
Author's Website: Soul Sistah Slash, [livejournal.com profile] sekritotherlife
Why it should be read:

I love "what became of Napoleon and Illya after what we see on the series" fic, but [livejournal.com profile] soulsistahslash's epic is one of the best fleshed out I've seen in reconciling a vision of a modernized UNCLE that still has our two favorite Enforcement agents (sorry, Mark and April) as key players in all of their wisdom. It's a lot of fun to see Napoleon and Illya mentoring the up-and-coming, unlikely duo Cooper and Duncan, who serve as perfect counterparts for what they used to be but still are. The original characters are well fleshed out without taking time away from our main spy guys, a challenging feat that the author masterfully balances against a realistic and engrossing plot. Funny, engaging and occasionally tender without being maudlin, this is a fun story that makes all of us wish we could be UNCLE agents, too.

02:52 pm Daybreak by Palmetto (R-ish)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Kara Thrace/Sam Anders
Length: 2,200+ words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] palmetto
Author website: none listed
Why this must be read:

Wonder what life might be like for the humans and cylons, living and working together, when both sides are honestly trying? With New Caprica as a very real example of how not to do it? Well, wonder no more. Just read Palmetto’s Daybreak, an entertaining look at life post-Revelations. The dialogue and characterizations, the insights into the psychology of the Eights, these things alone are worth the read, but the whole frakking thing is just so much fun. Yes, post-Revelations fun (well, yeah, along with the pain and the angst :P)!

Enjoy! :)

03:03 pm Eternity in an Hour (R) by Keelywolfe
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: slash, Napoleon/Illya
Author's Website: Keelywolfe's MFU Fic
Why it should be read:

It is a gross simplification to label Keelywolfe's work as lyrically rendered bittersweetness; I have come across few authors anywhere whose visceral imagery keeps echoing in my mind for hours after rereading it. Technically this is a PWP, but it's so raw and emotionally intense without being the least cliché that you're left in awe of how agonizingly beautiful and evocative language can be.

10:59 pm In Which We Burn, by halotolerant (PG)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Length: 2000 words.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] halotolerant
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read: It's a sweet Sam/Gene slash story that doesn't try to mask the fact it's set in the prejudiced world of 1973's Manchester. In fact, it plays upon reader perceptions and understandings of what must be happening. It's very lyrical, with small details littered throughout, and a rhythm that flows over you as you read. It also has what I consider to be one of the most memorable images ever written in a Sam/Gene story. If I had to use one word to describe In Which We Burn, 'beautiful' would be it.

11:25 pm Bride of the Antichrist by Kelly Girl (R)

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Sam Winchester/Dean Winchester.
Length: Short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kelly_girl
Author Website: LJ
Why this must be read:

Sam Winchester, Demon Messiah. Just guess who's the nominee for Unholy Consort.

Sam then demonstrated why he’d one day make the perfect King of Hell. “There’d be food at the reception.”

Dean perked up, but tried to act casual. “Really? What kind?”

Sam smiled. “Anything you want. Those little Philly steak sandwiches you like? We can have them and some steak quesadillas, maybe some shrimp toast. How about some of those fancy French fries like we saw on that food show?”

Dean put down his soggy fries and almost whimpered. “With the different dipping sauces?”

Sam nodded and sprung the trap closed. “I was thinking about a chocolate wedding cake, three tiers high, and four different kinds of pie.”

Why this must be read:

Azazael is the Yellow-Eyed Demon and “Memo” is a crackfic classic. Hell is just like Corporate America. Who’da thunk it?

As you know, I have plans for Sam Winchester and all the children like him. Yesterday I left the plans on the photocopier. If any one finds them please return to Central Filing.
