09:25 am The Rest, As They Say, Is History by KC (PG-13)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Chris/JC
Length: Medium
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] msktrnanny
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

It's sort of like TrickC goes Buddhist? JC and Chris get reincarnated over and over during various time periods in various situations, but of course they always end up together because theirloveissopure and all that. But the real reason this should be read is because it's creative and funny, and yet at times quite poignant while really showcasing JC and Chris as characters. Even though it spans several centuries, you always know exactly who JC and Chris are because they're the same from 1864 to 2216. There's one particular section you have to read for that I don't want to give away, but it's one of the best things I've read in popslash this year.

10:44 am If, For Nothing Else by scullyseviltwin (teen)

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [personal profile] scullyseviltwin
Author Website: Fic tag on LJ
Why this must be read:

I'll admit it. I love angst when it's well done. This post-series finale story drips with wonderfully-handled angst from the first lines to the last. It is an honest and unflinching look at what giving her son up for adoption has done to Scully, and Mulder, too. It made me sniffle, but it also made me think.

On a personal note, I've been in this fandom for more than ten years, and I love seeing so many talented newer authors writing X-Files fic!

11:41 am Leathers, by MacGeorge (NC-17)

My apologies for beginning so late. I hope to put up a few recs a day until I catch up.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Length: short story
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] macgeorge1
Author Website: MacGeorge's Madness and Highlander Fiction archive
Why this must be read:

Well yes, I'm making a predictable insta-rec. How could I not? This, as the author herself points out, is a rare smutlet for the hell of it from MacGeorge. It features a gloriously earthy MacLeod in motorcycle gear: dirty, oily, and unshaven, rolling hot from a rueful but necessary conquest through Methos's front door. There is nothing, nothing like Duncan written by someone who loves his big hunky ass.

And here his obsession was, all decked out in Quickening-singed leather, smelling of sweat and testosterone.

'nuff said. Read and enjoy.

06:22 pm Regrets by Saidicam29 (NC-17)
Fandom: STAR TREK (ORIGINAL SERIES)
Pairing: Sarek/Amanda
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] saidicam29 (but she's never posted anything)
Author Website: Vulcan's First Family or her TrekTales page
Why this must be read:

Okay, I admit it, I have a thing for Vulcans. I generally tend to go for aliens that are different enough (biologically and culturally) to be, well, alien, and yet still like us enough that we can understand and emphasize with them. Vulcans fit the bill to a T, and Saidicam29 does a good job of exploring this in a well-thought-out AU.

For Vulcans, family and lineage are all-important, and the basis for much of their culture. Star Trek tends to take it for granted that they are compatible (biologically and culturally) with humans, which is rather incredible if you think about it. (Green copper-based blood! Suppressing emotion!) Saidicam asks the question: what if it wasn't so easy? What if Sarek and Amanda, trying to live a traditional Vulcan life, couldn't have kids together? What if fundamental cultural differences led to fundamental misunderstandings about the nature of their relationship? What if they got divorced? Where do they go from there? Add in new relationships for both of them and the complications of an unexpected Pon Farr, and you've got the makings of a good, angsty story.

07:00 pm Fulfilled and Unfulfilled by Samantha Quinn (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE
Pairing: T'Pol/Archer, Trip/T'Pol
Length: two multi-part stories
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] samanthaquinn and [livejournal.com profile] pervyficgirl
Author Website: Merely an Illusion, her fic at Warp 5, and ff.net.
Why this must be read:

Another nicely angsty look at the problems and misunderstandings inherent in a relationship between Vulcans and Humans.

Those of you in the DC fandom know her as [livejournal.com profile] pervyficgirl, but she started out in 2002 as a firmly PG/PG-13 rated het shipper named Samantha Quinn. While she is an excellent writer today of higher-rated slash stories, her early work is proof that lack of explicit sex is no barrier to writing intimately intricate relationships. Unfulfilled was written in 2003 (begun before the Xindi arc), while Enterprise was still on air, so it's firmly AU.

This story is about consequences. It's about what happens when people try to do "the right thing" without understanding the expectations and belief systems of the people those actions affect. It's about the impossibility of building true and lasting relationships when one or more party of the relationship doesn't understand--or want to understand--the other. It's about what happens when you assume that either pure emotion or pure logic is enough to build a life on.

And it's about what happens to the kids caught in the middle.

08:35 pm Quartet by Roseveare (R)
Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Wesley/Lilah, Fred/Gunn
Length: 170k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] roseveare
Author Website: Freaky Alternate Universe
Why this must be read: Roseveare's had quite a few other fics recced here before, but I'm shocked no one's mentioned this one yet. Set in the summer post s3, LA's going to Hell, and it's up to Wes, Lilah, Fred and Gunn to stop it. This fic is as harsh and gritty as the Hell they're in, the characters are raw and real, filled with panic and fear and the personal hells Roseveare crafts for each character are perfect in their utter cruelty.

08:39 pm Cat Got’cher by SassyInkPen (NC-17)
Fandom: TOUR OF DUTY
Pairing: Sgt Zeke Anderson/Lieutenant Myron Goldman
Length: 1858 words
Rating: NC17
Author on LJ: [personal profile] sassyinkpen
Author's Website: Sassy's Smut Emporium; Notes From the Underground

Why this is a must read:

A comment by a fellow writer had Sassy jumping all over it with glee. The result is hysterical and you have to see how a pool table, a box of kittens and a pitcher of milk are used in this fun romp.

Excerpt:

I stare at the box warily...it's making strange noises and thumping a lot. "Zeke," I snap fearfully, "What the *hell* is that?!" I don't think I wanna play this game anymore and I start to struggle for real. Still no use. I'm staring at him wide-eyed, and my heart's pounding so hard I think it's gonna rip a hole in my chest.

He sets the box down on the floor and bends over it. I hear a noise I think I recognize, and hope to hell this is a joke. When he stands up, he's got a kitten in each hand, and a grin that would put Johnny to shame. It sends a chill down my spine.

I warn him in a low voice, "All right Sergeant, enough's enough, untie me right now...."

11:41 pm This is a Love Song by Olivia Circe (Adult)
Fandom: Bandom
Pairing: Alicia/Mikey/Pete
Length: ~12,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] olivia_circe
Author Website: none, but she has a fic master list on her lj

Why this must be read:

Alicia/Mikey/Pete is one of the most popular threesomes in bandom, but it's still rare to find a story that really delves into their relationship as well as this one does. The heart of the story is the complex web of relationships between Mikey, Pete and Alicia. Mikey and Alicia both know how hard it can be to get over Pete Wentz, but the love they share for Pete only strengthens their relationship with each other. They're rock solid perfect for each other and I love the way Olivia Circe writes them. And Pete. Oh, Pete. Pete who's so sure he'll mess any relationship up, so convinced he can't have what he wants. I love Pete in this story, but I hurt for him too.

It's hard to think of anything I don't love about this fic, but I think what I love the most is how rooted this story is in canon. Tour dates and travel and holidays, Alicia's stint filling in on bass with From First to Last and My Chem's tour of Australia, all the little details combine to make for a very strong sense of time and place, a physical grounding for the emotional arc of the story.
