Fandom: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
Pairing: Matt/Julie, Matt/Lauren, Matt/Carlotta
Length: 2000

Why this must be read: Because Matt Saracen doesn't get enough love from anyone, except his Grandma, and even then he's so busy taking care of her that he has a hard time seeing it. It's impossible to pick the most heart-breaking character on this show, but Saracen is definitely in the running. He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, so much so you can see him physically straining under the weight. I had hoped season 2 would be easier for him than season 1 but it wasn't. This fic takes a look at Saracen through out season 2. It gets inside his head and puts you in his shoes. The voices and characterizations are fabulous.

Length: ~1000 words

Why this must be read:

Of all of amonitrate's graceful, atmospheric stories, this one is my favorite. It's a brief glimpse of Methos recentering himself after the events of "One Minute to Midnight." The characterization is perfect in its understatement and the words are like spare, elemental poetry. I can feel the storm coming.

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Xander/Giles
Length: ≅ 11,000 words, together

Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] savoytruffle is another author whose work I would put on the mandatory reading list for fans in the Buffy-verse. In these two stories, [livejournal.com profile] savoytruffle shows us a Xander who is damaged and a Giles who is trying to handle it. That might sound depressing, but these stories are very hopeful, and they leave me confident that Xander and Giles can take care of one another, even when they don't know how to take care of themselves.

Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Length: 2,160 words

Why this must be read:

I must confess that when I first read this story I fell head over heels in love with it. And I still love to re-read it. No matter how many times I read it, it never gets stale.

This story works on many different levels. It is a wonderful love story - it has wonderful hot sex - and it has meta thoughts about the characters and about writing itself, although it never gets cloying or annoying. And all in a language that is in turns sharp and poignant, and sweet.

And if this is not enough to convince you to give this story a try, there is the wonderful characterization of both Fraser and RayK.

Why this must be read:

The Remix Challenge is somewhat notorious for producing interesting, thinky, or complex stories ... that nobody outside of the challenge reads. Well, you'd be doing yourself a disservice to pass up this fic.

Donna writes it in such a way that you're left dizzy from the emotional paso doble and get muddled as to just who your sympathies lie with. She does this without ever losing the strong central theme of the story: Lance in two flavours, getting what he needs from Nick and giving what he needs to Justin. For all Nick's expansive, lazy ease and Justin's devouring, cavernous moods, it's Lance's stake in all this that has me fascinated. Every time I read the story I wonder a little more about how he frames himself in this scenario, tease out some new element that makes me go, "ah-HAH! no, wait ...."

It's not light reading. But if human interaction sans plodding explanatory narrative is what intrigues you, this story will bring out your inner psychoanalyst.
