02:37 am The Deltabury Tales by D'Alaire (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR TREK VOYAGER
Pairing: gen, minor Paris/Torres
Length: 3,000 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: D'A Green Room
Why this must be read: Chaucer is rolling over in his grave with this fic, which rewrites Voyager a la the Canterbury Tales in the same writing style and old English tone. I found this fic to be very unique and well-written, and it warmed the cockles of my English major heart. If we had been reading this in class, I would have certainly paid more attention lol. D'Alaire certainly put a lot of effort into this: she's got the rhyme scheme and phrasing down perfectly, and I think she even has the meter down as well. Wow. Worth taking a peak at just to admire the work behind this.

Fandom: STAR TREK VOYAGER
Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Chakotay/Other
Length: 5,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] iamsab
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] fromthesabrary
Why this must be read: Guys, this is THE WAY J/C WORKS FOR ME: UNHAPPILY. I don't know, I feel like they would have so many issues that it would never be happily ever after for them. That said, whatever way you love Janeway/Chakotay, this is really a great fic. Back in the Alpha Quadrant, Janeway and Chakotay finally make it to the bedroom, but never past that. "Things have been different," she says. "It's not the same as it was on Voyager. It can't be." And it isn't, and God, poor Chakotay. He's really great in this fic.

03:56 pm Swordspoint Fandom: an Overview
Coming late, but with recs.

Let the fairy tale begin on a winter’s morning, then, with one drop of blood new-fallen on the ivory snow: a drop as bright as a clear-cut ruby, red as the single spot of claret on the lace cuff.”

Swordspoint.
Ellen Kushner’s mad, bad boys; Alec in his black scholar’s robes with the Tremontine ruby marking his fingers blood-red; Richard with his swordsman’s grace, dancing death on a stage that encompasses all of Riverside and beyond; whore, Duchess, merchant, lord, beggar – myriad, distinct characters sprung to life in vivid strokes of the pen.

In making recs this month, I’ll try cover the time frame of all the novels, but as always, the stories rec’d are a purely personal choice.

04:14 pm Cheating Death by Harukami (PG)
Fandom: SWORDSPOINT
Pairing: Richard/Alec
Length: one-shot, 1200 words
Author on LJ: http://Harukami.livejournal.com/
Author Website: http://harukami.hanashika.com/
Why this must be read:

To begin at the beginning, a moment Ellen Kushner has not written.

The Swordspoint reader comes to Alec and Richard at the start of the series, as established lovers. In Cheating Death, set before the series opens, Harukami describes this first meeting in words that capture Kushner’s sense of violence and beauty intertwined, and at the same time position the story within a landscape accessible to readers both familiar and unfamiliar with the city of Riverside.

09:27 pm Lilacs, by Trovia, rated PG
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: HotDog/Gaeta
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] trovia
Author Website: http://trovia.livejournal.com/
Why this must be read: Because Felix Gaeta and Brendan Costanza share some deep history. This author's style is tender and amusing, with excellent wordplay and a terrific grasp of characters. If I were allowed more than one rec per post, I might also rec Stakes. This author has just become a must read for me and revitalized my love for Felix Gaeta and fondness for the hapless HotDog.

It was much better being just Hot Dog where what you saw was what you got. And he could fly again now - he loved flying. So Brendan didn't really miss his dad and when all was said and done, he might just be one of the few people who were happier now than they had been before.

09:40 pm When There Are No More Tomorrows by CDS (R)
Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
Pairing: Julian Bashir/Ezri Dax
Length: 26,000 words
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: CDS on fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

Just call it DS-Noir ...

Part mystery, part thriller, part buddy-cop road-trip, this is the story of what happens when Julian Bashir volunteers for post-Dominion War reconstruction and finds himself caught up in a tangled web of murder and conspiracy.

CDS writes a crisp, taut thriller, leavened with humor and an evolving relationship between Bashir and Ezri Dax. What really makes the story sing, though, are the moments when CDS turns a sharp, incisive eye on his characters, peeling back the surface layers to find the wonderful and terrible heart of human nature.
