04:23 am Court/Ship by Executrix (PG-13)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Inara/Simon, Kaylee/Jayne, Mal/Nandi
Length: 10,747 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] executrix
Author Website: just her LJ
Why this must be read: This is Jane Austen's Emma remixed Firefly style, for goodness' sake; the very idea is pure gold, but E'trix's particular style really makes it shine. She has a very distinctive voice, full of dry wit and erudite allusion, which is just perfect for this story. She manages to deftly weave the very recognizable diction and characterization of Firefly with the elegant narrative language of Austen in a delightful synergy that does both sources more than justice.

Pairing: Tony Stark/Pepper Potts
Length: 8,500

Why this must be read: This is a beautifully done character study of Pepper, full of panic, joy and peace and all the other conflicting things she feels when she and Tony finally trip over that line.

AUTHOR’S FIC SITE: Nepthys_UK’s LJ
PAIRING: Sam/Gene
WHY THIS MUST BE READ: It’s meta, and she says it’s crack, and I suppose it is. But it’s almost beyond crack, really. There are places where a lot of authors would have turned and made certain things into one-off jokes, but not here! It’s meta, and crack, but serious crack. It’s quite astounding. One of the reasons I love this fandom as much as I do is that for the most part, people don’t take themselves too seriously…and here’s a prime example of fandom laughing at itself. Brilliantly done.

Why this must be read: Because this fic is so brilliant and powerful that I can't express my awe properly.

With just a few words, each sentence meaningful, [livejournal.com profile] eponine119 sheds a new light on the Jack-Sawyer dualism that is one of the one of the themes I love most in Lost. I loved this fic to pieces. Set around middle S3, It highlights their being two sides of the same coin, and made me look at both Jack and Sawyer in a different, deeper way. After reading this I kept asking myself how could I have not seen the whole scheme before - but it was thanks to this talented writer that I was able to see it at all.

From the author's summary: So here's the question -- who can answer it --
Was he a brave man or a hypocrite?
(Czeslaw Milosz, "In Black Despair")

Author Website: Fic list in the author's memories. Otherwise, simply follow the tag [lost_fanfic]-all or any other tag you are interested in.

Why this must be read: I'm again reccing two fics by the same author because I can't choose among them, they are both so brilliant, original and well written! (see below for the rec of The Man Inside).
This one is a great story, with an amazing characterization of two characters that in canon are so minor one almost doesn't remember about them and that now are suddenly alive for me in such a way that I'd love if Lost told their story too.
[livejournal.com profile] eponine119 gave both Aaron and Clementine such interesting personalities and backgrounds, and she wrote a riveting tale that follows Aaron and Clementine through the years, taking into account those mysteries that are now part of the life of these two characters, meanwhile highlighting those subtle similarities between them and their family.
This story is now part of my personal canon.

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: none; Dean-centric gen
Length: 4k words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minervacat
Author Website: when the floods roll back
Why this must be read:

This is a story about the random-but-not-really stuff that Dean keeps in the glove compartment of the Impala. I really like stories that catalogue the stuff the Winchesters carry and what it means to them, and I really love Dean's relationship with his car (I admit to being somewhat OTP about Dean/Impala), and this story merges those two things beautifully, with sharp, spare prose and spot-on character voices.

Using the items in the glove compartment, [livejournal.com profile] minervacat gives us clear snapshots of the Winchester family dynamics over the years, and Dean's place in them. She also captures the heartbreak, loss, and enduring strength of his character.

If you enjoy the story, don't forget to tell the author.

Why this must be read:

Man, I had hoped this story would be finished in time for my crack van spin.  Seriously.  My metaphorical fingers were crossed and everything.

You don’t get long fic much in this fandom anymore, but Anjou – one of the classic writers in the x-files fandom – sure knows how to do it up right.  Beating the Darkness Back is set post-IWTB, and it’s got everything: tropical vacations, sex, snark, angst, William, and a happy ending.  Settle in with a cup of hot chocolate and prepare to be catered to.

Why this must be read:

Horror stories aren't written all that often in sci-fi fan fiction, but this story is wonderfully creepy, set in an alternate universe where it's considered a status symbol to purchase and use 'eyes' that have been harvested from other people. You see what the original person saw, and when McKay is barges into Miss Lindman's shop, demanding the most expensive eye she sells...well, he gets more than he bargained for in his pearl of great price. There's some great worldbuilding in this story, and some lovely imagery--if you like imagery on the dark side--all told through the POV of an original character.

Why this must be read:

If a fic can sell something to me that I’d ordinarily run away from while uttering a high-pitched girly scream, than the author has done her job.

It's got wives. It's got kids. It's gen. Despite all this, give it a try, okay? It's fabulous.

08:13 pm The Love Song of S. Ray Kowalski by metaphoracle (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] metaphoracle
Why this must be read:
Today, I'm reccing poetry! This is a reworking of the T S Eliot poem "The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock" as a post-Call of the Wild story. I am floored by how the author manages play with the themes and phrases of the original poem, while reworking it into Ray Kowalski's POV. His slangy language works strangely well with the poem. It's sometimes funny and sometimes kind of sad, but it's always so perfectly Ray. I really can't recommend it highly enough. (And come on, it's short! Go read it!)

Why this must be read: Tony makes Pepper a present, which is either really, really thoughtful and perfect, or kind of creepy and sinister. Or maybe both, given that it's Tony. I love the angsty wryness of Pepper's voice in this -- her intelligence, confusion and attraction suffuse every word.
