Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski, Fraser/Stella, Stella/Kowalski Length: 3450 words Author on LJ: exeterlindenWhy this must be read: This story impresses the hell out of me, probably because I find it hard to get inside Stella's head. Stella is smart and flawed and human here, and the disintegrating remains of her marriage with Ray are perfectly drawn. It's so interesting to see her and Fraser circle around each other, not sure of each other's place in Ray's life. Also, seeing Fraser from Stella's POV reveals facets of him that I hadn't thought of before. Apartment Story

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: none Length: 5,865 words Author on LJ: tripoli8Author Website: tag list on LJWhy this must be read:This is a hilarious and heartbreaking story in which Dean, post-Jus in Bello, attempts to build a new identity for Sam, one that he can use safely once Dean is gone. The humor just makes the heartbreak sting that much more, and it's all the kind of stuff you can easily imagine Dean doing and saying. ( an excerpt )Dean's voice is spot-on, and the details tripoli8 uses are what make this story so powerful – the background Dean makes up for Sam, as well as the sorting through of the stuff they've accumulated over the years – the reality of their lives versus the story Dean is concocting. And the ending is like an unexpected punch to the gut. Highly recommended, especially if you like stories that leave you all achy in the chestal area. If you do enjoy it, please let the author know. Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Author: amy_wolfAuthor's fic index: Amy-Wolf's Fic MasterlistPairing: Gen. Characters involved include Sam, Frank Morgan, Ruth, Test Card Girl, and Other. Word count: just over 12,000 in 5 chapters. Why this must be read: Two of the things that I think are very interesting to explore and extrapolate from canon are: what Sam was like as a boy, and anything to do with Test Card Girl. Add into this a particularly interesting interpretation of the ending of the series and you've got a fic that's well worth reading. And also quite creepy. A nice read before bedtime with a steaming mug of hot chocolate, in other words! :) ( Excerpt from 'Lost Boys' can be found beneath the cut )Lost Boys

Fandom: STAR TREK VOYAGER Pairing: Janeway/Chakotay, Doctor/Seven, Paris/Torres Length: long Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Barbara's Voyager FictionWhy this must be read: This is my favorite Voyager fic ever. I adore it. It was written in S7, pre-Endgame, and is yet another take on how they get home. I like how the author was gutsy enough to kill off some characters, and she does a great job with characterization. I'm not quite sure why she named this story what she did, but it's the only thing I don't get. Whether it's a funny, sad, happy or angry scene, everything else is this fic is perfect - if they had needed an alternate ending for the canon, this would have been a good choice. Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: Zoe/Wash Length: 7,930 words Author on LJ: biggrstaffbunchAuthor Website: just the LJ Why this must be read: It's always been my feeling that the relationship between Zoe and Wash is one of the most dynamic and interesting canon marriages in any fandom ever. Their connection was vital and warm and passionate, and never oversimplified or saccharine. This story does a wonderful job of rendering their relationship in all its glory, with the added bonus of dealing deftly with the terrible impact of losing Wash. This is a gorgeously poignant, powerful statement about the nature of love and loss, and how it's possible to stay even slightly sane and whole in the face of the most absolute heartbreak. Plus, the characterizations are exquisite, the emotions feel real and raw, and the imagery is simply lovely. Fandom: SWORDSPOINT Pairing: Alec/Richard Length: circa 1K Author on LJ: athousandwinds Author Website: LJ fic tags here. Why this must be read:One of the many pleasures of reading the Swordspoint series are Ellen Kushner’s polished and distinct minor characters. Their voices, and the episodic nature of Kushner’s canon, are captured to perfection in Angharad’s lovely series of vignettes, encompassing humility, fortitude, charity, chastity, temperance, zeal and generosity. Not virtues which immediately spring to mind when considering the inhabitants of Kushner’s baroque creation. ( Read more... )The Seven Deadly Virtues

Fandom: MARVEL: SPIDERMAN (Movie) Pairing: No Pairing Length: novella Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: None Why this must be read: You know how superheroes save all these random people amidst the rampaging fights with their nemeses? Ever wonder what happens to all those ordinary people after their lives have been saved? Well wonder no longer. This long, plotty story gives a name and backstory to one of the women rescued by Spiderman, and she's exactly what you'd expect, but also so much more. I love how full of quiet gratitude this story is; it makes me imagine a hundred other stories, of all the people silently grateful and doing little things for their heroes without any acknowledgement at all.
