Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: Hisoka/Oriya Length: 1244 words Author on LJ: mistressrenetAuthor Website: none that I know of Why this must be read:Exquisite, sensitive, and deceptively understated, this is a story that packs more into its short length than you might think was possible. It's about Hisoka and Oriya (and, illustrating the sheer range of the fandom, it shows them in a very different light from my last rec). And it's about being a messenger of death, and love and the limits of love, the distances that remain between lovers, and in the end, about the inherent mysteries of the human soul. Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Merlin/Arthur Length: novella Author on LJ: takadainmateAuthor Website: Shiny AkabekoWhy this must be read: This is an atmospheric adventure, full of rain and cold and an evil thing. The only way for Merlin and Arthur to survive is to trust their instincts and cleave together. Fortunately, Merlin has very good instincts, and Arthur is a man who cleaves well. I really love the way the friendship between them shines out of every line in this wonderful action-packed story. The World Under Heaven, Here All Is Lent: Part 1, Part 2

Hello, my name is Denyce and I will be driving the van for Dark Angel this month. Sadly, I didn’t know about Dark Angel back in the day, but in the last year or so I have become obsessed. Please check out the Overview, if you missed it, to see why. I am a slasher, and a major Alec fan. So most of my recs will reflect that, though I hope there will be a little something for everyone. Fandom: Dark Angel Pairing: shades of Alec/Ben Length: 1,200 words Author on LJ: ladyjanellyAuthor Website: NA Why this must be read: Twins! Double the pleasure ;) OK, besides that—for me it's newly discovered & I fell hard for the lovely, painful angst. After the destruction on Terminal City, Alec barely escapes with the help of his twin, X5-493. The fic is a wonderfully insightful take on Alec’s character. Wounded and struggling to survive, Alec discovers the differences he has with his twin, Ben. I loved the details she created, Alec’s voice, the raw emotions, and the painful descriptions that she used to create this world where Alec and Ben work together to escape from Manticore's soldiers. Perfect example: Alec drifted. His war was over, his friends were dead, and his body was too broken to fight on, even if he knew who the enemy was.( Excerpt )Once You Go Down That Road

Fandom: Dark Angel Pairing: Alec/Logan Length: 17,600 Author on LJ: alyseAuthor Website: Unconscious MindWhy this must be read: A nice deliciously long hurt/comfort piece. Logan finds and rescues Alec when he’s down suffering from seizures. It’s Logan taking care of Alec, nursing him back to health. A slow, detailed, intimate build of trust and something that becomes more than friendship. It’s long, well written, spot on dialogue and stays true to the characters. Fandom: PROS (THE PROFESSIONALS) Pairing: Bodie/Doyle Length: 625k Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Ellis Ward at The Hatstand and Ellis Ward at The Circuit ArchiveWhy this must be read: Because it’s time for some AUs this coming week. Pros is a fandom with an amazing number of AUs. Everything from Regencies to the Bastille, from Arabian deserts to spaceships, and from Victorian birdwatchers to trapeze artists. You name it, and chances are Bodie and Doyle have been there, done that, and got the scars to prove it. And few transport them better than Ellis Ward. ‘Legacy of Temptation’ is built on a fairly simple premise. Bodie is a Computer Techie, Doyle is a writer of male/male romance novels ( yes, how delicious is that – and you wait till you see the titles of the books he writes:)) But Bodie has another sideline: investigating the paranormal. And Doyle has more than a computer bug fouling up his life and his house.. Cue a nail-biting ghost story wrapped around an engaging male/male romance. The horror element is a delicious background. It’s creepy, vivid and downright scary at times, and makes for some truly terrifying confrontations. She builds up layers of mystery and atmosphere, all the while nudging Bodie and Doyle towards each other. One of the things I love about this, is how their sexuality is not an issue. There’s no Sudden Onset Gayness to deal with as both characters are gay, so all she has to spend time drawing out for us is the attraction and the relationship, which she does with her usual flair for emotions minus the dramatics. It’s Bodie and Doyle, committed and in love, but still very recognisable as the lads while they go about it. ( an excerpt ) Legacy of Temptation

Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: none Length: 1732 words Author on LJ: ranalore* * author prefers her IJ journalAuthor Website: love is an oceanWhy this must be read:There are many, many stories in the YnM about Tsubaki-hime, Hisoka, and the bitter, twist-of-the-knife ending to the King of Swords arc. This is the best one I know. Complex, ambiguous, very adult, and beautiful in its rhythms and imagery, it's a story to read more than once. All YnM stories are ghost stories to some extent, but this one is more so than most. And as such, it makes for a lovely demonstration of why ghost stories and horror stories have been, from time immemorial, the stuff of lasting art.* Two Dishes, But to One Table (Hungry Ghost Overdub)*I'm listed as a beta on this story, but my activities as beta reader were limited to reading it, falling over with an audible thud, and informing Rana that she should not change a single word. So while I'd normally avoid reccing a story I'd been involved with, in this case there wasn't the sort of involvement with the text that would affect my objectivity as a reader./Mandatory Disclosure.
