12:41 am Get Loved, Make More, Try to Stay Alive by dsudis (R)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Length: 68,550 words, 8 chapters and an epilogue
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis
Author Website: http://dira.ficlaundering.com/
Why this must be read:

Hello! I’m [livejournal.com profile] laughingacademy, and I’m thrilled that the mods were suckers kind enough to give me another opportunity to make some recs.

I am especially pleased that I get to write up this fic, described by its author as both “the Torchwood Epic of Ridiculousness and Doom” and “Less than 19% mpreg by volume”. Yes, mpreg, but don’t let that put you off — [livejournal.com profile] dsudis handles the situation with intelligence and humor, not only explaining how it happened, but finding a clever way around all that food cravings/morning sickness/swollen ankles nonsense.

Ultimately, the pregnancy is not the point, but the occasion for a rich, multifaceted story. It’s an exercise in world-building, a romance, a tragedy, and a comedy in the Shakespearean sense. And if that’s not enough to convince you, here’s a bit from the chapter in which Martha Jones and the Doctor get the news:
“I'd have thought Jack would be doing the introducing if--he hasn't got himself into trouble, has he?” )

I can think of few better ways of starting a new year than by reading this paean to life with all its pains and possibilities.

03:10 pm Sanctuary by Lynna Bright (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 54K
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:   Because sometimes oldies really *are* goodies!

It isn’t coincidence that January is named for Janus, the god of beginnings and endings. Something about starting a new year has us reflecting on the past. As I pondered over stories to rec for this month, I’ve been drawn back to the beginnings of Sentinel fanfic. “Sanctuary” is so old it might be the first TS slash fic or even the first online TS fic altogether. It is the oldest fic posted at 852 Prospect; archived just weeks after the second season began.

I’ve often wondered how authors can write while a program is still on the air – what if the story differs significantly from canon?  Well, I guess it would then be labeled an AU!  This one, however, has a remarkable resemblance to canon – Blair is offered an expedition where he'll be gone for a year.  He goes, with Jim’s blessing,  and it gives them both a chance to reflect on what the other means to his life.

Take a look at this historical gem and wonder how many time she’s been echoed in the last twelve years.

Hi. I'm dhrachth and I'll be your Star Wars driver this month. I love Anakin, Obi-wan, epics and AUs so that's pretty much what you can expect from me this month.

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Anakin/Padme
Length: novel-length
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: FF.net Profile

Why this must be read:

Anakin is taken in by the Sith instead of the Jedi and everything spirals out from there. This is an excellent example of how one little change can make all the difference. And it has some of my all time favorite Obi-wan & Anakin scenes in fandom.

Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES
Pairing: Holmes/Watson
Word Count: 4000 words
or on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] franzeska
Author Website: unknown

And here I am once again, driving the Sherlock Holmes van for the month. [I also drive the Man From U.N.C.L.E. one occasionally, and it astounds me how many authors are to be found in both fandoms. I love it, because it means that we are assured of getting lots of high quality work.]

This author is new to me, but I thought very highly of her work and will be reading her other stories.

06:12 pm The Kubler-Ross Model by dakfinv (green cortina-Teen)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: gen
Length: 9000 words
Author on LJ: dakfinv
Author Website: dakfinv at the Collators' Den
Why this must be read: Sam Tyler goes under cover in a mental hospital. Do I need to say more? OK, so it is also very well written and tells you more of a story than it appears to at first.

08:38 pm The Boys from Berlin Affair by Cord Smithee (NC17)
Hi, I'm the CrackVan driver for UNCLE this month. Please be patient with errors as I've never done this before. So, here goes:

Fandom: Man From UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Length: 160K
Author on LJ: Don't think so.
Author Website: Archived on Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse
Why this must be read: I've seen many of Cord Smithee's stories recced here and have the same opinion of them I've seen from others. Anything this writer has done is well worth reading. I have a great interest in World War II and this story is so plausible. And slash too! What more could one want. Come along for the ride, and enjoy the story. Please let me know if the link doesn't work.

09:43 pm How Very 1920s, by purple_bug (PG-13)
Hi, I'm amaresu and I'll be driving the Doctor Who van this month. I've got a mixture of Old and Middle Who lined up and I hope you enjoy.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Charley/Zoe, Eight/Jamie, Two/Jamie(/Zoe), Charley/Zoe/Eight
Length: ~3000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] purple_bug
Author Website: Teaspoon account
Why this must be read: It's not the 1920s, but everyone is pretending it is. Everything is wonderfully shown in this manner. Charley is from the 1920s and her reactions are spot on for someone raised in that time, while at the same time being so very Charley. Zoe is perfectly in character as she flirts and explains things. This is a beautifully written piece.
