12:04 am MEMORY LAPSE by Carmen Sandiego (Teen)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: none and yet many. It's mostly gen with overtones
Length: 48,750 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] calapine
Author Website: Archive link
Why this must be read: The late summer of 2008 was dominated by a slew of fix-its for Journey's End, as fandom gave a collective primal howl over the finale of season four.

This was among the most original and the most plot-driven of those tales. It gives you the Tenth Doctor, a mystery in Cornwall, Sarah and the kids, a Donna who does not remember, Jack Harkness, Gallifrey and the Time War. It is not perfect but it is written with huge verve, has some terrific lines, excellent characterisation and a gorgeous, sad ending. To say more would spoil it, and as someone who read it chapter by chapter and loved that experience, that's the last thing I would want to do.

06:42 pm I Remember You, by Colleen Kane (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Mark Smithbauer
Length: 2100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] traveller
Author's website: Her stories at the Due Slash archive
Why this must be read: I recently had this recommended to me, and I thought I'd pass on the rec, as there might be others who had missed it. I've always liked this pairing--for example, Smithbauer is one of the few people I can see Fraser having buddy sex with, and it's interesting to explore their history together during their teenage years. This fic is set in the beginning of season 3, when Smithbauer comes for a visit to Chicago. I love the way that they're easy and relaxed with each other, but still there are things between them that aren't said. The sex is hot, but the ending is bittersweet and makes me feel for them both.

09:36 pm Anniversary by Sheffield (PG)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none, gen
Length: ~1,250 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Sheffield's Fic on LJ
Why this must be read:

This is a lovely little fic that I first came across when I discovered The Sentinel 10th Anniversary site, which was set up to display art and stories that had been created in honor of the 10th anniversary of when the show was first aired. The site is unavailable right now; it's under construction and under new management, but things should be back up very soon. In the meantime, fortunately, you can find this gem on Sheffield's Fic LJ. Her vision of where the boys are ten years later is both funny and tender, but the banter between them is as sharp as ever. And, as usual, Jim needs a little help finding what's right in front of his face.

Excerpt:

Jim stood back, mentally, for a moment and thought seriously about that one. The Sandburg vibe? Aw hell, yes, after ten years of it, it was too late now to start bitching about the language. The Sandburg Vibe was in his blood now, was the music of the spheres that his whole life chimed to, was in the food that he ate and the air that he breathed.

Wait a minute…

He had just thought something important…

10:57 pm The Electric Espresso Acid Test by Kleenexwoman (PG)
Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin, very slightly
Length: 1860 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kleenexwoman
Author Website: On Dreamwidth

Why this must be read:

Reccing this displays a little bit of my own bias, I suppose, but when I first read this fic it impressed me and made me wicked jealous as a writer. It's short, but complicated and twisty and utterly bizarre, which is what I like out of a story. And yet, even though it's strange, it's still not out of character, as it deals with two of the more neglected aspects of the fanfiction worlds of U.N.C.L.E. and Thrush: bureaucracy and psychoactive drugs, and where the two intersect. It manages to be both funny and creepy, and I love this characterization of Napoleon that thinks to ask the enemy secretary out onto a date with him and Illya.

Also, I jumped back from my screen when I saw that MS Paint worm.

Excerpt:

"Yeah," Shelley says into the phone, "test subject D is doing all right." She glances at Napoleon. He nods and smiles, pleased that Illya is OK. "Exhibiting signs of apparent attention deficit," she adds, "otherwise appears to be normal, or attempting normal behavior." She lowers her voice. "He says he drew me a worm. I don't know what that means."
