Why this must be read: I'm kind of out of words tonight, because I've been migrainy all day. But this story is about Rodney making a proposal as only Rodney can, and it makes me happy. *hearts*

Why this must be read:

Technically, this is a crossover with Supernatural where Sam and Dean exist in the Firefly-verse, but it's much more a Firefly story than a Supernatural one, and I think it can easily be read by folks with no SPN knowledge whatsoever.

Anyway.

Zoe hooks up with Dean one night and a couple months later, she finds herself in the family way. She and the crew of Serenity learn to deal.

When the story gets told later it always begins different. Kaylee says it begins when Wash died, leaving her with an empty bed and unfulfilled dreams. Simon thinks it was dusting off a crying child that fell and scraped her knee one day when they were in the market of some little backwater. Mal doesn't say, because he knows better, but Zoe knows he thinks it's when she ended an argument between him and Kaylee by asking what would happen if it was her with child. He'd got real quiet and they just looked at each other. No one said nothing after that, like it didn't happen, but months later, more'n a year after Miranda and Wash and rebuilding a life in the Black, no one was too surprised when Zoe asked Simon for a pregnancy test.

She got a woman's notion is how Jayne puts it with a slightly disgusted shake of the head at Zoe so vulnerable to something so womanly, not that she ain't womanly, he always hastens to add. River giggles and just says it was time, and Inara only smiles and skips straight to the part with the bar.

On that point everyone agrees. There was definitely a bar.

This is a beautiful, achy, hopeful story about rebuilding after loss, about coping with grief and moving on while not forgetting what was lost (wah! Wash!), and it's funny and sweet in the way the best of Firefly is, with excellent characterization and a wry, affectionate narrative voice.

Why this must be read:

I believe a lot of stories are based on a frozen moment in time, one moment from which we extrapolate in a direction where Real Life (TM) may not choose to follow. This story was written in 2002, and takes Lance in a direction he didn't follow. It's not the happy-go-lucky boy or the snarky bitch or the evil-overlord-in-training.

But it's potent. It's the first part of the 'Pretender' series, which leads Lance down the road to self-destruction. 'In a Mood' shows us Lance weighed down by troubles, unable to find what he needs; he turns to self-harm and rages in his desperation. The story presents him so convincingly, how he can feel this way, why he does what he does, what he wants and dreads. The last line...

The Pretender series as a whole is well worth reading (if you are in a strong mood, or else need something heartrending), but this story makes me understand these feelings in a way I didn't before I read it. However, please note: if you cannot bear to read about depression and self-harm, please don't read this.

Why this must be read: Words have meanings, and motifs insinuate themselves everywhere, waiting to be teased out. This is a story about Lucy Saxon (a character we never got to see enough of, IMO), the forces that act upon her, and the choices she makes. Also, it contains the word "ostinato," and that's win enough.
