11:21 am Afternoons by Sensine (PG-13)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo / Illya Kuryakin
Length: approximately 2,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sensine
Author Website: Sensine's Fan Fiction
Why this must be read:  In this short piece, Sensine is able to convey so much emotion and spot-on characterization of our leading men. It's not your average 'Illya is hurt and Napoleon is worried' story. There is an underlying warmth and tenderness here, much like there was in the series, but here Sensine is able to explore those feelings a bit more in depth and give us a resolution that is not only wonderfully mushy but also quite believable. Read this and fall in love with our boys.

03:32 pm Five Times Miranda Priestly Tells the Truth by chainofclovers (R)
Fandom: THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Pairing: Andy/Miranda
Length: 7100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chainofclovers
Author Website: Master List on LJ
Why this must be read:

I'm not sure Miranda lies often, but I do think when asked a question she doesn't want answered, or when in an uncomfortable situation, she obfuscates or misdirects or just plain steamrolls over everyone else. Especially when a truthful answer will leave her vulnerable. In this fic we see her vulnerable five times, a how each time changed her life just a little.

06:46 pm Dork by Miriam Heddy and Francesca (R)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 8,270
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Miriam Heddy's Little Corner of the Universe
Why this must be read: Because it's me being a banter freak again. Miriam Heddy does it for me in every fandom of mine she writes in. She nails the characters, their speech patterns, their quirks.. and it's all so damn funny and HOT at times. Plus, she's co-writing with the mighty Francesca here, so you just *know* it’s going to be good. In this one, Sandburg turns up at Jim's desk one day with different glasses, a silver pen in his pocket, and most importantly and weirdly of all for Jim, a haircut...

"So, what happened with the hair?" Jim asked, tossing the menu down onto the rough wooden table.

Sandburg raised his eyebrow. "What, literally?"

"No, not literally," Jim snorted. "I know what happened literally."

"Literally," Sandburg continued, ignoring this declaration, "it's in a box." He sat back in his chair and waited expectantly.

Jim blinked; okay, so maybe he didn't know what happened literally. "In a box?"

Sandburg nodded and there was something missing. His hair. His hair used to nod right along with him and now it just... didn't. Wasn't.

"Yep. At the post office," Blair clarified, breaking into a smile.

08:07 pm Not So Silent Movies by Major Brat (NC17)
Fandom: Tour of Duty
Characters: Myron Goldman/Zeke Anderson
Length: 2272 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] majorbrat
Author website: Notes From the Underground

Why this is a must read: Major Brat got permission to write in Meryn's "Anytime, Anywhere" series and came up with Zeke and Myron at the movies. Like Meryn's stories in this series, this one is funny, sexy and hot all at the same time.

Excerpt:
He inclined his head towards Zeke, noticing that Zeke leaned in as well. "Besides that, Sergeant, it's going to take a lot more than that to get in my pants."

Zeke's eyes widened in surprise. "Feelin' a little adventurous tonight…sir?" The last word was whispered and drawn out. "Beginning to wonder about you, boy. Seems you got some kinks I ain't found yet."

Myron pulled a cigarette from his pocket and lit it up. After taking a long drag and exhaling slowly, he let the smoke curl lazily into the air. "S'only kinky the first time around."

08:30 pm Other Men's Sins by Loch Ness (NC-17)
Sorry for the delay in posting - between vacation and Vividcon, I've been out of town most of the month. I'll try and make up for it during the last half of the month with some really good recs.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Length: 144k (apx. 9,000 words)
Author on LJ: Not that I know of
Author Website: http://lochness.home.texas.net/fanfic/FFfront.html
Why this must be read:
In the aftermath of One Minute to Midnight the breach between Duncan and Methos seems enormous. Loch Ness gives us a look at one way their friendship might have been mended.

09:27 pm It's All in the Game by Plausible Deniability (R)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: CSM/Teena Mulder, CSM/Cassandra Spender
Length: 30k
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Plausible Deniability on Gossamer
Why this must be read: I decided, for this rec, to reach back into XF fandom history a bit. This story is part of a series, though it stands alone quite well, and is set pre-series (also, it's a two-parter, and both parts are at the same link). The Cigarette-Smoking Man remained an enigmatic figure throughout the series, and while he was overused by the end of it, his backstory was definitely one of the most interesting aspects of the mytharc.

Here, CSM is having an affair with Teena Mulder, the mother of our show's hero. It's a study of CSM balancing his affair and his marriage, and it's wonderfully written. It's hard to wrap our heads around titular characters that aren't fleshed out on the show, and writing them successfully in fanfiction is even harder. PD did a great job here. It's also a great "set piece" story - set when the characters are younger, in the 1960s, it brings the show's rhythm and voice into that era effortlessly.

Fandom: Bandom
Pairing: Ray Toro/Mikey Way
Length: one-shot; short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lovelypoet
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:
This story is utterly adorable, and it'll appeal to any reader of slash who has a soft spot for the geeky cinefans out there who just want some love, too. No need for familiarity with My Chemical Romance necessary to enjoy this one. I loved the dialogue, too.

10:11 pm Iridium is the Second Densest Substance on Earth (After Guys from Chicago) by just_katarin (NC-17)
Fandom: Bandom
Pairings: Sean Van Vleet/Tom Conrad, Nick Scimeca/De'Mar Hamilton (background Panic At the Disco GSF and Pete/Ashlee, Bill/Tom and Tom/Butcher in the past)
Length: long, novella-length: 25,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] just_katarin
Author Website: LJ sticky post with index
Why this must be read:
This is really long Empires non-band AU, Tom Conrad/Sean Van Vleet as the main pairing. It's a great read for those who just like a good slash romance, no need for knowledge of any bands. You'll appreciate the characterization if you're familiar with Bandom, but it's not essential for enjoyment. I liked the feeling of friendship among all the characters in this story.
Empires primer here for those who need more information or context. And here's a Tomrad history, if you want to know more about Tom and his buddies Jon and Nick.

11:02 pm The devil to pay by jojosimco (PG13)
Fandom: The Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Gen
Length: Novella
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jojosimco

Why this must be read: This fic is a follow on from the equally well-written Strange bedfellows and Three strikes and you're out. The story begins with a court case against the rogue Palmer family and ends with an epic gun battle in the streets of Four Corners and reads like a Western of old.

I love both the character descriptions and the way the author provides the build-up of tension throughout the story. Her minor characters and bad guys are well drawn and our heroes just about jump off the page. Ezra is suffering from his injuries and pride, Chris is angry and everything and everyone, Buck is supportive and JD, Nathan, Josiah and Vin are all so in character; the story is a delight to read.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Characters: Ted Kord (Blue Beetle), Booster Gold
Length:1100
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wonderfish
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Because the full title is Ted and Mike's Excellent Multiverse, In Which Ted and Booster, Quite Independently Thank You, Discover the Multiverse. [livejournal.com profile] wonderfish sidesteps the angst and makes for the funny, but doesn't do so in a condescending manner.
