12:22 am Mr Woolsey's Guide to Etiquette in the Pegasus Galaxy by Busaikko (R)
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: John Sheppard/Richard Woolsey
Length: medium-long: about 5000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] busaikko
Author Website: busaikko's fanfic webpage
Why this must be read:
Dipping back to November 2008 now: Woolsey/Sheppard might strike you as terribly unlikely, but this story will make you suspend disbelief. This won't ever be my OTP, but this story was thoroughly enjoyable. The Woolsey voice is excellent, and the somber-at-times tone suits the gravity of the man at the center of this story.

For those wary of the pairing, know that the sex is peripheral, not explicit. I liked the well-detailed view of Atlantis and Pegasus as much as I liked the POV character and this John Sheppard. (It's not the usual "Teflon John" or the variant "Woobie John".)

12:37 pm VID REC: Supernatural - Missionary Man
Okay, it's still Friday somewhere, I'm sure.

Vidder: Vesper Regina
Musical artist: The Eurythmics
Pairing: Gen - Dean and Castiel
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] vespertanmer; vesperregina on Dreamwidth
Vidder's website: unknown
Why this vid kicks ass: For a considerable time during Season 4, I kept this video on a loop on my computer. Why? It made me smile, it's just long enough to play repeatedly and not go completely insane, and it's The Eurythmics. It's perfectly timed, and I dare you to find the place the vidder cut a couple of lines of the song. The cut is that precise. It's a nice introduction to the character of Castiel, and his initial interactions with Dean, and the lyrics fit perfectly. It's about one and a half minutes of your time ... go check it out.

12:59 pm Importuning Life for Life by Circe Invidiosa (R, language)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: mid-length vignette
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cinvidiosa all entries are locked
Author Website: Circe Invidiosa's X-Files Fanfic
Why this must be read:

Invariably by the end of the month, I'm usually asking all my friends who read fic to help me recommend some good fic. I asked around and got this response, "have you recommended any of Circe's stories?" I said no, and continued looking for other stories to recommend. After finding many in a row that had already been recommended here, I decided to go back and give Circe a try. My reluctance was not because I don't think Circe's a great author (she is!), or that I haven't read much of her work (I've read it all!), or because I don't think it is worthy of being recommended (it is!), it's because quite honestly ... I hadn't read it in awhile and had forgotten HOW good it was.

This story is a post-ep to "Elegy," you know, the one in the bowling alley with the dead girls with "She Is Me" scratched into their chests? Yeah, that's also the one where we learn that Scully is dying. So does Mulder. I think the X-Files Cancer Arc was one of the best story arc's of ANY series. It is what made season 4 so good and it was beautifully played by both Mulder and Scully. This story tells of the moment just after "Elegy" when Mulder and Scully must've had that very real discussion about her own mortality. It is angsty, gut-wrenching, and powerful. This takes you back to that cancer arc, puts you in Mulder and Scully's heads, and asks - whose truth is whose?

If you would be willing to make a month of recs in a fandom that's already been named, comment to that thread saying so (you'll need to comment again if/when an official sign-up sheet gets posted).

If you're confused about the process, I'll demonstrate below.

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Pairing: Rodney McKay/Ronon Dex
Length: long: ~25,580 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sardonicsmiley
Author Website: no more tears
Why this must be read:
I squeed when I discovered this lengthy(!) Ronon/Rodney(!!) "marriage of convenience" romance. I say again: Marriage of convenience! In other words, read this story if you like that, even if the pairing isn't your thing. It's adorable, and I especially like the Ronon POV.

Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Ianto/Tosh, Jack/Tosh
Length: ~ 2,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] 51stcenturyfox
Author Website: No website that I know of.
Why this must be read:

Tosh is fleshed out and real here. This is the Tosh canon hints at but never truly fleshes out. It's so great to see a Tosh who takes care of herself and her needs. I love her thoughts and insights, and her interactions with the other characters.

10:05 pm The Truth of Legends by Babbling Brook (PG)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Length:~28,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] babblingbrook42 (also on IJ)
Author Website: None?
Why this must be read:

This story, written for the Snarry Games in 2008, is an Alternate Reality where Snape has just inherited an estate from his great uncle, Albus Dumbledore, along with a couple of mysterious charges, Harry and the little dragon Prospero. I quite like the world building here, resetting the magical world in a Victorian sort of society, while incorporating eastern dragon lore, and the story itself is a great version of the 'secretly a ...' plot. Nice cameo by Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy, not too evil, as well.

10:48 pm Upon the Matter of Britain by Femmequixotic (PG13)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Length: ~24,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic
Author Website: Fic on Archive of Our Own
Why this must be read:

In "Upon the Matter of Britain," the only way Harry and Snape can bring the war to an end is to work together, a well-worn plot (JKR might have had a go at it herself, even). But the interesting thing that Femmequixotic has done here is to weave in the original magical world of Britain, by using the Arthurian legends in the plot (the "Matter of Britain" referred to in the title is a name for the mythology of Britain in general). And of course, the subtle suggestion that Harry is Arthur, come back at Britain's hour of need, the Once and Future King, does fit rather well with Harry's messianic status in the HP books.

Merlin-the-hawthorne-bush (go with it, trust me), trapped in a cave in Brittany since the time of Arthur, has just been waiting for someone like Snape to come along. Snape and Harry, well, they haven't been precisely waiting for each other, since each was previously involved (Harry/Ron and Snape/Draco; note secondary character death warning), but the author does a nice job showing them learning to give each other a chance, finally.

11:03 pm VID REC: Terminator/Aiens - Don't take your love away
Since I didn't want to clutter up all of Friday I've put a wait between my vidrecs. But I couldn't leave Aliens out of it. Unfortunately my favorite Aliens vids seem to have dissappeared, as happens on YouTube ;-( Therefore I'll rec one who's every bit as good, but not only Aliens, it's the Terminator as well. What can I say, there are a LOT of Terminator vids out there! No wonder when a movie is that good *g*

Fandom: MICHAEL BIEHN CHARACTERS - Kyle Reese from Terminator/Dwayne Hicks from Aliens
Vidder: Baronessa
Musical artist: VAST
Pairing: -
Vidder on LJ: don't know
Vidder's website: I only know the you tube channel: Baronessa

Why this vid kicks ass:

It's the music... wonderful song IMO. And how the images of first Reese, than Hicks, Reese, again, HIcks, those awesome marines entering the station on LV-426 fit to it.... It's how it shows why so many people became an instant fan of Michael Biehn when watching one of these two movies.
