12:49 am I Never by ArtemisX5 (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Scully/Mulder
Length: 21k
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Fic List on Gossamer
Why this must be read: This takes place after the movie Fight the Future. It's a great little piece that has Mulder and Scully on a mind-numbing fertilizer case in Missouri. The heat just seeps out of this fic. The language really makes you feel how blazing hot the temperature is in the story as well as the rising, crackling tension between Mulder and Scully. It's got great banter and includes Drunk!Scully which always earns an A++ in my book. The ending is sweet, sultry and absolutely perfect. The author wrote a sequel that I'll include the link to, but I really loved the first one all by itself.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none
Length: 5400 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: at Fanfiction dot Net

Why this must be read: Because sometimes we just wanna have fun, right girls?

I needed something light to balance my dark-fest, and this unlikely piece came across my radar. Blair signs them up for a “Trading Spaces” type show. If you haven’t seen it, two people end up decorating a room of the other with the help of a professional designer and carpenter. I’ve seen the show and it’s a real mixed bag – some rooms are fabulous and others are pretty terrible. Come see if Jim’s and Blair’s efforts delight or dismay.

08:06 am Good Night, Sweet Prince by Meltha (R)
Fandom: SHAKESPEARE -- HAMLET
Pairing: Hamlet/Horatio
Length: 2500 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Meltha's Blackberry Patch
Why this must be read: So what was Hamlet like before he became the Melancholy Dane? He certainly talks a great deal about his young and presumably cheerful past, and he does have his college buddies, including Horatio, who stands devotedly at his side all the way from Act I through the bitter end (Act V, for those who are counting). Just how close are they, and how did they get to be that way? Meltha gives us a glimpse at a happier time, with a teenage Hamlet and Horatio in that particular convergence of youth and status where the world really is their oyster . . . and yet they each want just one thing more.

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Xander/Riley
Length: 8,200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mireille719
Author Website: Fic Journal
Why this must be read:

In the interest of full disclosure, I should admit that this fic was written for me in a [livejournal.com profile] maleslashminis fic exchange. I'm not recusing myself from reccing it, though, because it's quite possibly the most adorable Xander/Riley AU out there. In this fic, Xander is an elementary school teacher, and Riley is the father of one of his students. This story is sweet without being treacly, and it makes me smile every time I read it.

02:45 pm "The Tea in China" by cadhla (PG)
*HR fumbles around in pockets looking for van key* Sorry, sorry I'm late...

Fair warning, I am one of the "new school" Doctor Who fans so the stories that I'll be reccing this month will most likely be those of the Ninth and Tenth Doctor. Also, yes, I am one of those that does indeed 'ship the Doctor with Rose, and though I do not intend to have my recs be just that, I thought I'd warn you that some may be along those lines. Anyhoo...

*HR starts up the Van*

Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: N/A;
Length: Short Fic
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cadhla
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

This fic is simply perfect; seriously. It is a lovely example of how science fiction, and Doctor Who in particular, can examine and illuminate very profound things through the use of mundane situations. The author is spot on when it comes to the characterizations of both Rose and the Tenth Doctor, and the writing is excellent as well, very intelligent and thought provoking.

I'm late to the party this month - apologies! But let's get down to business, shall we?

I'm Maidenjedi, your Harry Potter driver for October. My tastes in this fandom run pretty dark, and mostly gen or het. You probably won't see much slash from me.

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: None
Length: 2250 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] avendya
Author Website: Avendya Writes
Why this must be read: Written for the 2008 Remix Redux, this story is a trip down memory lane with Bellatrix Black Lestrange. How did she learn the Cruciatus, what were things like for this eventual madwoman when she was just starting out? [livejournal.com profile] avendya's Bellatrix is a devout follower of Voldemort's, who sees things in him that she could only imagine before. She sees her ambitions realized.

Dark, lyrical, and unrelenting.

07:06 pm On the Amalfi Coast by Adrianna Coylho--PG
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Leroy Jethro Gibbs/ Donald “Ducky” Mallard; Leroy Jethro Gibbs/ Jennifer Shepard
Length: over 1000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] adriannacoylho
Author Website: None that I know other than the Author‘s journal
Why this must be read: Adrianna has authored many a lovely G/D fiction. She is as adroit at writing the tasty Drabble tidbit as she is at writing the long NaNoWriMo banquet.
I really love this story for many reasons. Firstly and foremost, it is a G/D love story. Please refer to the last paragraph.( which I have printed off and now resides under my pillow.) Secondly, she paints Jenny Shepard as a field agent in a good light. Thirdly, ( shades of MFU) we get to see “Action Ducky”

Enjoy!

Title: 8-Tracks and Razor Blades
Fandom: Burn Notice
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ivy03
Author Website: Her LJ
Why this must be read: This is a brilliant back story piece with a totally believable set up for the rest of Michael's life.

Excerpt: The trick to surviving an interrogation is focus. They will leave you alone, sometimes for hours, to give you time to work yourself into such a state of anxiety that, when they finally return, you'll be so desperate for reassurance, you'll spill everything. Your fear can be their most powerful weapon. Don't let it. Focus on anything else---times tables, song lyrics, state capitals---anything that you can recite by rote that will prevent your mind from wandering.

Fandom: Burn Notice

Author Website: Her LJ
Why this must be read: I love this little fic. It's a fun and funny look at the rules of being a spy and how they might apply in… other situations. Like sex. *lol*

Don't let the second person POV dissuade you. It works perfectly for this fic, which is one of my favorites!

Excerpt:

Lesson 1: If you are being grabbed, don’t pull away…move into your attacker.

You step in as hands move. Sliding down from where they had originally grasped your forearm to keep you from walking away. Momentarily they settle, almost entwining with your own before moving to land at your waist.
