01:23 am Mirror, Mirror by Sowell (NC17)
Fandom: NARUTO
Pairing: Naruto/Sasuke
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sowell
Length: medium
Author website: Sowell @LJ
Why this should be read:

From the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] sn_exchange SasuNaru Exchange Summer 2009, [livejournal.com profile] sowell's Mirror, Mirror is delightful warning of being careful for what you wish for. Even when a powerful jutsu goes wrong, Naruto is finally able to fulfill his promise to Sakura and bring Sasuke home. Only problem, he's switched bodies with his former teammate.

Mirror, Mirror is everything about Naruto that makes you grin ... with a little yaoi thrown in to the mix. Enjoy!

.

Vidder: Ishamaellives
Musical Artist: The Bloodhound Gang
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ishamaellives
Why this vid kicks arse:

A documentary *cough* on the mating habits of Sam and Gene and the rest of their pack CID summed up very appropriately in the song's lyrics: “You and me baby ain’t nothing but mammals, so let’s do it like they do on the discovery channel.”

Yes, it’s very cracky, a lot of fun and slashy as hell... What’s not to love? *g*

10:11 am Five Things Diefenbaker Likes About Ray Kowalski by Janne (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Can be read as Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 1215
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: due South Tag on LJ.
Why this must be read: This has to be one of the best fics centering around Dief and Ray K's relationship I have ever read. This story really shows the unspoken understanding they have about how to handle Benton, food and the station.

one.
Ray shares food with him whenever Ben isn't looking. Ben's always had this unreasonable idea since they came to Chicago that junk food, and donuts in particular, isn't good for half-wolves, and Dief always argues that it isn't good for humans either, but that doesn't seem to stop them for eating it. It never helps though. Ben just won't listen.

Ray, on the other hand, knows exactly what Dief is talking about. Especially after Ben started making very polite comments about Ray's donuts intake.

Vidder Ancasta
Musical Artist: 'Take Me The Way I Am' by Ingrid Michaelson
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ancastar
Vidder's Website: Vids at Ancasta's Corner
Pairing: None
Why this vid kicks ass:
Because it’s by Ancasta, who can turn her hand to angst, drama, and light-hearted fluff in equal measure. I’m surprised none of her S&H vids have been recc’ed here already, so let me set that right with this toe-tapping, smiling-all-the-way intro to all that is good in the S&H fandom. It’s short, delightful, beautifully timed and edited to the beat and lyrics of this quirky little song, and even if you're not a fan you’ll be smiling by the end, I guarantee it.

11:29 am Prompt Critical by onjuistheid (PG-13)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: Gen
Length: 1,400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] onjuistheid
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read: This is a beautifully written story about a very young Tony Stark, growing up with the help and guidance of family friend Obadiah Stane. The author has done an impressive job of composing a story which is superficially sweet, charming and heart-warming, and yet at its core creepy, disturbing, and, as the title implies, explosive.

Also: cameo appearances by Richard Feynman, Richard Hamming, and Emilio G. Segrè. Manhattan Project RPF FTW!

Vidder: Arefadedaway
Musical Artist: Pink
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] arefadedaway
Vidder's Website: Unknown
Pairing: None
Why this vid kicks ass: It does a wonderful job of encapsulating the character arc of the Iron Man movie: from Tony Stark, carefree billionaire "Merchant of Death;" to Tony Stark, a man in crisis; to Iron Man, superhero. It's a cool origin story with a great beat.

01:23 pm I let my oars fall into the water by Jamie_dakin (NC-17)
.
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/various, Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt
Length: 4401 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jamie_dakin
Why this must be read:

A couple of weeks ago, I recced [livejournal.com profile] fiandyfic’s The Hookerverse here on the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van.

This story is a great example of what sometimes happens in fanon, if you’re very lucky, when one story/a series of stories inspires another writer to produce a great story as well. Here, Jamie imagines what happened to Sam after the end of the events depicted in the Hookerverse.

As I commented at the time: OMFG! The Evil Twins spawned a love child! I don't want to see it ending this way exactly, but damn it you make me believe and that makes me miserable... and really happy all at the same time. Such a lovely piece of writing about a not terribly lovely life.

Excerpt: He knows this, knows it backwards. How many times had he heard the lectures, gone to the conferences, studied the literature? Under the banner of 'Breaking the Cycle – The Rehabilitation of Sex Industry Survivors,' they'd brought in a real live former prostitute to lecture them back in ‘98 and Sam had spent most of the session staring at her unfortunate gut and wondering if it counted as rehabilitation if you just weren't attracting punters anymore.

03:30 pm VID REC: TORCHWOOD - Sway
Vidder: Leggedxl
Musical artist: "Sway" by Dean Martin
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] leggedxl
Vidder's website: Master List
Why this vid kicks ass: This is one of the cleverest and funniest constructed reality songvids about Jack that I've seen. Imagine if Jack told someone in the future the tall-tale version of his time at Torchwood. That's pretty much what this vid shows us, and it's just as gay, over the top and hilarious as you'd expect. The look on Jack's face when he sees Ianto with the wedding dress. Hahahaha. Just perfect! And it gets better with every viewing. *hearts vid to bits*

07:32 pm Sea Stars by Muccamukk (PG-13)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS

Length: 42,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] muccamukk
Author Website: Fanfiction by Muccamukk on Dreamwidth; Fanfiction by Muccamukk on Archive Of Our Own; Fanfiction by Muccamukk on LiveJournal.
Why this must be read: This summer, there was a Big Bang fest for the Captain America/Iron Man pairing (see [livejournal.com profile] capiron_bigbang). Eleven stories were posted, with artwork. I would happily rec more than half of them on Crack Van. However, Crack Van drivers must observe the speed limit. Therefore, I have picked one Big Bang story to rec, and I picked the story that made me cry. (It does have a happy ending, in case you're worried about that.)

Sea Stars is long and plotty, with wonderful pacing, satisfying character interaction, and a never-before-seen tactic for achieving global domination. Also: amnesia, resurrection, lots of fish, the horror of finding one's expensive, imported coffee grinder is not working, and the origin of the Undead Avengers.

09:47 pm So This is Christmas by Saoirse (gen)
Guest Reviewer: Roslyn

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none
Length: 9388 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://truthtrek.com/lky/wendy.html

Why this must be read: Nothing brings out key elements of a buddy-genre story like a case and action tale combined with a holiday theme. “So This is Christmas” is a prime example of the traits which allowed this show to retain its loyal and long-running following into fan fiction . Saoirse illustrates the natural intensity of a true friendship and imbues it with that fraught quality which exemplifies the interdependence of sentinel and guide. In the following excerpt, the partners argue about the danger involved in Jim acting as bait for a 'Santa' killer trolling the malls:

"I'm going with you." Sandburg jabbed a finger into Ellison's chest. "And don't even say it's too dangerous! No one's going to go after you in a crowded mall. The others were all attacked when they were leaving. Not while they were actually playing Santa. So there's no reason I can't be there while you're..." His eyes narrowed and then he relaxed suddenly, the tension draining from him as if he'd suddenly had his prayers answered. "Look man, I'm sorry. Sometimes I feel like he's taking advantage of you, without thinking about the consequences." He held his hands out in acquiescence. "But it's your job. I get that, man. I shouldn't have sounded off like that. So, we good here?"

"I'm good if you're good," Ellison said, shaking his head at Sandburg's ability to have an argument with him, apologize and make up afterward, all without Ellison managing to get in a single word. He supposed it saved time at least, but somehow it was every bit as exhausting as if they'd both been shouting.

11:10 pm Recalibration by hangthemj (NC-17)
Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Arthur Linderman/Luke Campbell, Luke Campbell/Sylar
Length: 9078
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hangthemj
Author Website: over at lukexsylar

Why this must be read:
This is pretty much epic. It's a story told from Luke's POV that takes place in a post-apocalypse AU where the norms of society has fallen apart - it's all about surviving and the powerful vs the powerless, and although Luke ends up as a sex slave he does not do all that bad for himself. The way his POV is written is convincing and his pragmatism and his attraction to power shines through. And the smut, my God, the smut... it's amazing! This is some terrifyingly good bdsm with Luke as a wonderfully greedy bottom. [livejournal.com profile] hangthemj really nails the utter worship that most Luke/Sylar shippers live for.

And the opening scene alone... It's angsty and tragic and striking.
