02:02 am Flying into the Black (R)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL/FIREFLY
Pairing: Jim (Womack)/Blair
Length: 3500 words
Author on LJ: Jane Davitt
Author Website: www.janedavitt.com/index.html
Why this must be read:
Once upon a time, there was a wonderful series called Firefly. A wonderful actor, Richard Burgi, had a character spot for one episode playing Lt. Womack, an evil, nasty, corrupt cop. Now, what if it turns out that Lt. Womack's senses are beginning to really cause him all sorts of problems. Oh, I know! Let's drop Blair into the Firefly universe. Blair is Blair, even if Womack insists of thinking of him as a Shephard. Now imagine how their first meeting might go...

This is a great story, well-imagined and wonderfully funny. Lt. Womack is just as powerless to resist Blair's charms/bossiness as Det. Ellison ever was. This story is very true to the Firefly 'verse while getting the fine line between Lt.Womack and Jim Ellison just right.

And like both The Sentinel and Firefly as TV series, this story leaves you wanting more.

Author Website: Master Fic List
Why this must be read:

This fic needs to be read for its sheer comic value. On the surface this story isn't anything I'd normally like; it's told from the point of view of someone other than the protagonists, it ignores half of my favourite characters, and there's very little sex. None of this stops it from being one of the best and possibly the funniest piece of RPS fanfiction I've ever read. The whole story is told from the point of view of Chad Michael Murray; and never moves out of the character the author has created for him for a second, but she still manages to be touching and sweet at all the appropriate moments.

You could never find this anywhere else because the comedy is so random, found in everything from porn to couches to toes, and unless you're a serious non-slash fan, I can assure you you'll enjoy this. Have fun!

11:41 am Odds Against Part 1&2 by tasha NC-17
Fandom:STARSKY AND HUTCH AU/crossover with THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing:starsk and hutch/bodie and doyle
Length:Nice and long
Author on LJ:UNKNOWN
Author Website:http://starskyhutcharchive.com/stories.php?genre=slash
Why this must be read:Why? Because it is the best of two worlds, Starsky and Hutch and the Professionals.
Even if you have never seen the Professionals you will enjoy this story. Tasha does a wonderful job of putting Starsky and Hutch in the world in 1939. Hutch is a Lieutenant and Pilot that trains fighter Pilots and intelligence operations of G2. Starsky is a Chemist working on developing a chemical that could kill anything in sight. They are in love(Yay).
Starsky gets himself in trouble because the bad guys want his formula for this "GAS" and he has destroyed it so that it can`t be used to harm anyone...you can see where this is going, yes Hutch to the rescue, but he needs the help of British intelligence Brodie and Doyle.
This is exciting, angsty, and just really good.

"In brief, Lieutenant Hutchinson, this is your assignment: Find this man and bring him back to the States," the colonel stated, fingering the file in front of him. "I will turn you over to Major Henderson for a complete briefing." Without further explanation the Colonel rose, and Hutch moved with him, throwing a smart salute. The colonel returned it and left the room, leaving the door open for a short, swarthy man wearing a major's gold leaf to enter. Hutch again saluted stiffly. He was doing more saluting today than he had done since the Academy

02:23 pm A Natural History of the Watch by Glossings (R)
So, crossover day! Naturally, there are many crossovers between Wilby Wonderful and the other Canadian six degrees fandoms, and I'll probably rec some of those this month. But today, I'm reccing a crossover with Buffy (no knowledge of Buffy needed, though--I don't have any and it worked for me).

Fandom: WILBY WONDERFUL/BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Duck MacDonald/various
Length: 2800 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] gloss
Author Website: fanfic by glossolalia
Why this must be read: This is an amazing story, and I really can't recommend it enough. If you read one story out of all the ones I recommend this month, I'd prefer it to be this one. It takes something that could so easily be just dry theory and turns it into something concrete and full of physical and sensory detail. I suppose one could say that it's about the relationship between normal and queer, between human and beast, and between civilization and nature. But it's also about Duck, and about Wilby.

Pairing: varied
Length: ~ 1,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nancybrown
Author Website: No website that I know of.
Why this must be read:

This is a wonderful view on Alice and her further journey. She really comes to life in this story and grows as a character. I love the glimpses into not only her life but into the lives of the other Doctor Who and Torchwood characters.

Pairing: Gen; Donna Noble, Lando Calrissian
Length: 2,800
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hibernate
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] gnossienne_nr1
Why this must be read:

When the Doctor accidentally abandons Donna Noble in a city in the clouds Donna does what she does best, and makes the most of a bad situation. Booze, sabacc, and cryptic predictions about the future occur, but mostly just Donna and Lando being awesome.

Title: There's a Leak in Every Boat, by Exeterlinden
Pairing: Joe/Duck
Length: ~2,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] exeterlinden
Author Website: Linden at AO3
Why this must be read: because the idea should be wildly improbably, but isn't. Linden does an excellent job of creating a close, claustrophobic atmosphere between Joe and Duck, with both of them running from their lives, their hopes and their dreams.

This is a raw, painful story, so true to both of their characters. Both Joe and Duck are young and hurting, on their own and lost. For one brief moment, they manage to find a rough kind of solace in each other before going their separate ways.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)/ STAR TREK (AOS)
Pairing: Jim Kirk / Kara Thrace
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] whatimages
Author Website: LJ Fic Tag

Why this must be read: If you ever were interested in seeing these eerily similar characters with their shared propensity for adrenaline, insubordination, barfights, and casual sex collide in a one-night stand, you should really give this short fic a try. The result is spot on in its character voice, and far more bittersweet in its naked honesty and sense of longing than one might expect.

Jim notices her because while she doesn't quite look out of place, he sure as hell hasn't seen her around before. He would have remembered: she has an electricity to her presence; she sparks over there in that dark corner.

Also, her tits are fantastic.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (new)
Characters: Kara Thrace & ensemble (with various background pairings)
Length: 4400 + words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ariastar
Author Website: Ariafic @ Dreamwidth

Why this must be read:

A BSG reincarnation college AU might seem like hilarious crack at first glance, but this fic manages to be both a light-hearted coming-of-age story about a girl going off to college and something slightly more serious: the next cycle of fate where all the characters miraculously get it right and don't quite repeat the mistakes of a past they only vaguely remember. It's the perfect happy ending for Kara because, this time, she gathers a more functional family around her, and it's beautiful.

Over dinner Kara learned that Dee wanted to be a communications major, that Zack's dorm was not as nice as hers and the bunk beds didn't work too well, and most importantly that Karl was trying out for the track team. "Basketball team for me," Kara said happily, and then it was basketball talk all the way to fortune cookies.

"Plan for many pleasures ahead," Karl read. "Oh God, that one's too easy."

"Wait, wait, mine," Kara said, cracking her cookie open. "Trust your intuition. The universe is guiding your life. Huh."

10:10 pm due South/Hot Fuzz (PG-13)
Title: Don't Drink, Don't Smoke (What Do You Do) by Minervacat
Pairing: Gen (but slashy of course, given the two canons)
Length: 12,600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minervacat
Author Website: when the floods roll back
Why this must be read:
Hilarity ensues when RayK and Fraser collide with the wacky world of Sandford. This story is 12,600 words of delightful crossover goodness, with great Fraser POV and voice, and the Hot Fuzz world and characters as seen through Fraser's clear eyes. It's a fantastic read.

10:32 pm Never could stand the cold by Tygermama (PG)
Fandom: Magnificent Seven/Due South
Pairing: none, Gen
Length: 7 Chapters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tygermama
Why this story must be read: What happens when the boys from ATF Magnificent Seven encounter a Mountie while at the hospital? When said Mountie claims to have known one of the Seven's father and now knows his brother - complications ensue. The author presents the relationship explanation in a believable way and all our favourite Mag7 boys are here with the addition of Ray, Benton, Buck and Dief. I especially love Dief's encounter with Ezra :D

11:15 pm The Lonely God - MCR/Dr Who by dalekdisaster (PG)

Because it's crossover day, I have decided to rec one of my favourite crossover fics.

I'm an absolute Dr Who geek and this little gem of a fic is just mindblowing.

Fandom: Bandom / Dr Who
Pairing: Ten / Gerard
Length: Over 20k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dalekdisaster
Author Website:only her LJ
Why this must be read:

Set post Battle of Canary Wharf, we find the Doctor travelling without a companion. A chance encounter in the local park finds him saddled with Gerard Way, a former rockstar who lost the love of his life during the Battle of Canary Wharf.

Hopeful, yet heartbreaking. Funny and voiced to perfection, this is a crossover you HAVE TO READ.

As far as I know, this fic is finished, but should dalekdisaster decide to add more chapters, I'd be very happy.

To the TARDIS!

Fandom: Bandom
Pairing: Nick Wheeler / Tyson Ritter
Length: around 20k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mintyfiend
Author Website: LJ, as far as I know
Why this must be read:

In Bandom, my primary band is MCR, but now and again, I come across a fic that showcases a different band so beautifully, that I feel like adopting them instead.

This hilarious fic, based on the movie Zach & Miri Make A Porno is fantastic. The voices are excellent, there's tons of gratuitous Travis/William sex and at the end of the day, Nick and Tyson are the kind of characters you want to be friends with.

11:28 pm Gerard Way's Diary by Padfoot-001 (PG)

I like Padfoot_001's writing. She's got a sharp eye for internal monologues and witty dialogues. Most of her fics are all WIPs EXCEPT for the following:

Fandom: Bandom (MCR)
Pairing: Frank / Gerard (Almost)
Length: about 20k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] padfoot_001
Author Website: I only stalk her on LJ
Why this must be read:

Hands up if you've read or watched Bridget Jones Diary? No one? Seriously?
Jeez. Ok, let's say you have. Now take that neurotic, weight obsessed, chain smoking, vodka swilling brit and turn her into Gerard Way, college student with issues. Serious issues.

This is one of the funniest stories with the adaptation from a witty, British satire, to something a little closer to our hearts.

11:31 pm Unfinished Business by Meresy (PG-13)
Sorry for the late start, but I was unwell while still having to drag my aching bod to work. I'll try to make up for the lack of recs earlier in the month while not spamming you too much on any single day.

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Ray Kowalski/Ray Vecchio, with a backdrop/mention of Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio
Length: ~2400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] meresy
Author Website: None that I know of
Why this must be read:
This delectable scene captures the intensity possible when two Rays ignite. I like the hint of heading toward F/K/V, but this works as it is, a moment between two partners who are more than friends, less than lovers (yet).

11:50 pm If It Doesn't Remind Me by beetle (R)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/FIREFLY
Pairing: Spike/Xander
Length: 3,438 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] _beetle_
Author Website: Inchoatus Inchoare
Why this must be read: This story follows Spike and Xander, many years after leaving Earth-That-Was behind. The particularly striking thing about this fic is the size of its margins. By this I mean that I love the way beetle implies a vast wealth of backstory and rich texture in this; it feels like there's the weight of a whole series of novels behind the parts of the story we get to see. So many questions hang tantalizingly in the air in the space past the end, so many falling shadows hint at the shapes of stories that must exist before this one. That is a delicate feat to accomplish, and truly impressive. Besides this, there is also some lovely dialogue, and the grace notes of some beautiful turns of phrase sprinkled throughout.
