02:08 am "Semantics" (PG) and "100001" (G) by grey_sw
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)
Characters: Centurions, Natalie; Scar, the Hybrid
Length: one-shots
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] grey_sw
Author Website: fic master list
Why these must be read:

Because they're funny, creepy, and thought-provoking all at once. These two separate fics offer a possible answer to what's going on inside the minds of the mechanical Cylons -- the Centurions and raiders -- who spent most of the series as faceless robot soldiers, under control of the prettier skinjobs. Grey's take on their artificial consciousness is great: equally childlike and knowing, rational and spiritual, sympathetic and scary.

"Semantics" takes place in season four, just as the Centurions regain their free will and take revenge on their humanoid masters, and tells that story from *their* point of view, as newly awakened machines who are re-learning how to act and think in their own words. In "10001" (binary code for "33"), the same treatment is given to a zippy Cylon raider, as he heads out again and again to fly and shoot at the command of a loving and mysterious Voice from the baseship. Both are really cool, and appropriate for a show that often gave us the POV of Cylon characters but never went this far. :)

Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Dean/OFC

Author Website: Author’s SPN fic tag on LJ.
Why this must be read: Dean’s way too cool for school, except now he has to take Home Ec. But little does he know that home economics geeks are way worse than band geeks, if you know what I mean. *wink wink*

04:07 pm The Fourth Seal by zigsternenstaub (PG-13)
'Allo, 'Allo! I'll be reccing for Highlander this month and hope I can come up with some new and interesting fics for y'all.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Gen
Length: 27,500
Author on LJ: [profile] zigsternenstaub
Author Website: FFN Profile
Why this must be read: I'm rather pleased I get to rec this one. Like many authors, [profile] zigsternenstaub has chosen to explore Comes a Horseman and Revelations 6:8. In this au, we see a Methos only hinted at within the series. [profile] zigsternenstaub has chosen to give us a Methos who sides with his brothers and convinces them to choose a less public place to try out Kronos' virus.

Throughout the entirety of this fic, Methos continues to march to his own drum, keeping the readers and the other characters guessing as to his true motivations. And that is what is so compelling about this fic. Even as Methos acts in a manner designed to make him irredeemable, there is still a part that keeps wanting to know what his end game is - why he is acting like this. Even in the epilogue where we find out what happened to Duncan the question of how Methos expects to see this through still echoes.

As a warning there are character deaths throughout this and scenes of blood, war and death. (No pun intended.)

06:02 pm Paradise Academy by tiptoe39 [NC-17]
Jaune Chat abuses power and refuses to hand over the wheel this month! Fear me! Or, you know, just peruse the recs, 'cause I got some good ones coming at ya for the lovely month of May.

Fandom: HEROES
Characters: Mohinder/Nathan/Peter (Mohinder/Elle, Mohinder/Sylar, Mohinder/Matt later chapters)
Length: 5456 words (1st chapter, 3 chapters in all)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tiptoe39
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] tiptoesmut
Why this must be read: This is a lush AU fic where Mohinder is a prince, and the other Heroes are students at King Chandra's Paradise Academy. Because, someday, they are all going to save the world. This world reads as medieval, with wonderful formal turns of phrase. Mohinder's realization as he goes from cloistered prince to a vibrant seeker of passion gives this story a powerful emotional core. You can see that getting everything you want could end up being very, very bad for you, but the journey there is going to be a scorching hot one. Interesting, emotional, fascinating, and steamy, the Paradise Academy is a great read!

06:09 pm Through the Ages by Chrysaliss (none given by author but about PG-PG-13 to be safe)

Sorry for the late start; those darn road blocks threw me into the curves. And there are more speed bumps ahead in the month before us. So, unfortunately I won't be able to do the amount of recs previous drivers have done; I'll be doing good to get the four required done. But we'll see what happens.

I read both slash and gen in this fandom so I'll and give you some variety this month. I'm also a big fan of anything historical so be prepared to see a couple of historical-based stuff here (like this rec). :D That all being said, please buckle your seat belts, grab our barf bags and "oh, sh*t!" handles, and get ready to have fun!

Why this must be read:

Out of all the takes on the fallout of the last episode of the show, this one is my favorite way of dealing it. Chrysaliss takes the idea of a destined path and makes it fresh with her accurate historical settings and very emotional narrative. I've gotta give kudoes to Chrysaliss for taking a fanfiction cliche and giving it a new spin. So give this fic a chance, you definitely won't be sorry.

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: None.
Length: Short (less than 1,000 words)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] misspamela
Author Website: Her website
Why this must be read:

Because it is an window into a seemingly everyday yet heavy with subtext (of the non-slashy kind) moment in Ray Vecchio's life. At first glance, this ficlet is about Vecchio-as-Armando-Langoustini enjoying his (borrowed) status as a mobster in Las Vegas. We get hints as to the kind of interesting life he's having while pretending to be someone else. However, this story is more about who Vecchio is without having to make a connection on his being a good cop because of Fraser's influence.

Even more interesting (especially for such a short fic) is the quick glance we get into the level of compartmentalization Vecchio has built in order to survive. That the edges between the real Vecchio and the pretend Langoustini blur if only for a moment, is absolutely fascinating and agonizing.

08:29 pm Missing Her by Calathea (G)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: None
Length: 1,490 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] calathea
Author Website: Her Website
Why this must be read:

This is a pitch-perfect backstory for Benton Fraser's childhood. Set roughly two years after his mother's murder, Fraser and his grandparents lives are upended by a visit from Fraser's father . . . because of a rather common-looking trunk.

Calathea has written a fic that lets us see the kind of man Benton Fraser will one day become by the kind of events that happen in his childhood. It's quite easy to be swept into the story through the practical nature of his grandparents, the stoicism in his father's personality and wee!Fraser's natural curiosity.

The reader's heart will constrict as the story reaches its bittersweet end.

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: None
Length: 292 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] luzula
Author Website: Her Fic Index, Her AO3 page and Her Podfic Index
Why this must be read:

This is a sequel to an AU in which Fraser is haunted by Caroline (his mother) instead of his father. Written as a 'missing scene' in the due South episode "Some Like It Red" (in which Fraser goes undercover as Ms. Fraser.), we see Fraser and Caroline talking about what it means to be feminine. [livejournal.com profile] luzula has written a sweet (without becoming sappy) exchange between mother and son.

A tender 'what if' of a snippet, Dress is a must-read.
