Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW) Pairing: various (every canon pairing and some non-canon) Length: 5,000 words (50 drabbles) Author on LJ: lls_mutantAuthor Website: fic master list (Harry Potter, BSG) Why this must be read:It's a wonderfully creative fic with something for everyone! Each 100-word drabble is based on Lily's "50 reasons to have sex" list from How I Met Your Mother. Every reason is demonstrated by a different pairing, including het, slash, femslash, and a couple of threesomes and solos. The reasons on the list range from generic prompts ("Curiosity", "Practice", "Love") to weirdly specific ones ("You're Already At Their Place and Don't Want to Move Your Car", "Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye is Playing on the Radio") -- all interpreted in very clever ways. Some of the results are hilarious, some sad, some sweet. Terrific idea and executed really well. :D Lily's List

Fandom: HEROES Characters: Audrey/Nathan, some Matt/Mohinder, Peter, mentions of others Length: 18,856 for all three parts Author on LJ: kethniAuthor Website: kethniWhy this must be read: One of Kethni's talents is to make these wonderfully believeable AUs. This one is no exception, as FBI agent Audrey Hanson is in charge of the Special Crimes Taskforce, a small unit of both normals and specials that handle crimes committed by those with abilities. With Matt Parkman as the most normal special you'll ever meet, Peter as the delightfully clueless all-around helper, and Mohinder as the most talented, horny nerd on the planet, and you have a truly awesome team. Add in Nathan as the "special" prosecutor, and a tough case where diamonds are being stolen and bodies being left behind by the robbers, and you have yourself a top-notch "cop show" that you wish you could watch every week. Kethni weaves in the background of specials being suspected of any and all wrongdoing, giving this story some depth and heft even in the midst of the plentiful banter. And as a point, if swearing offends you, this is not your story. Told from Audrey's point of view, it's clear this woman has never met an f-bomb she didn't like and isn't afraid to employ any and all swear words in every single situation possible. Yes, those too. And those. And that one. But it completely fits in with how Audrey is written, and makes the story just that much funnier. Taskforce, Part 1

Fandom:STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing:Starsky and Hutch Length: 48k Author on LJ: UnknownAuthor Website:http://meandthee.shahrazad.net/author.php?authorid=54 Why this must be read: Well if you always wanted to know what was going on in Hutch's mind during this episode, then this story is a must read. This story can be read as Gen, but in the mind of the author it is slash.
Hutch drove his beat-up LTD up one of the canyon roads just outside the city. He was headed west, towards the beach, but he didn't much care about a destination. He just needed some time to think, some time by himself, without Starsky. Without the whirlwind, the overwhelming presence that was Starsky. His partner sometimes had a way of making everything make sense, using twisted pretzel logic and irrational reasoning, that seemed so right when he said it but so wrong later, after Hutch had had some time to reflect. All Starsky had to do was flash that grin, give you one of his bear hugs, and you'd believe that everything was all right. How could it be wrong? Everything was fine. Now let's get a beer, buddy. Yes, that was Starsky. But everything was not fine right now, no matter what his partner said. Hutch could not shake that feeling. He didn’t want to shrug things off. He needed to think. The Blue Detective

Fandom: TORCHWOOD Pairing: Suzie, Suzie/Jack, Jack/Ianto Length: ~4300 words. Author on LJ: angstslashhopeAuthor Website: hope.oscillating.net / AO3Why this must be read:This is an awesome character study of Suzie, set around Ianto joining the team. The Suzie portrayed here is clever and messed up in a very believable way, and her observations on Jack and Ianto, thought coloured by her own odd fixations, are sharp and insightful. ♥! Excerpt: Jack tells her New Boy hunted him down. Suzie wonders how much truth there is in that; Jack has a tendency to bullshit the most mundane of facts, and speak truthfully about the most unbelievable. She wonders what tale he'd tell about her; of who followed who.
Well, in the first it had been less pursuit and more mere discovery. She hadn't called an ambulance. It had been pretty obviously too late by the time she came across his body, and with the ordered stasis of his internal organs, she'd felt swept away on a profound sense of calm. It was always exteriors that riled her, internal workings she knew; all predictable systems and structures. Seeing it all reconnect and close back together then had only heightened her fascination. Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: Richie/Methos Length: 3,419 Author on LJ: beren_writesAuthor Website: Highlander ficsWhy this must be read: Beren has come up with a unique fix-it for Richie. Before the whole Ahriman incident, Richie was bitten & infected by a werewolf. And the only thing that can kill a werewolf is silver. So what happens when Duncan kills Richie at Ahriman's behest? Well... for one thing, he wakes up three weeks later, alive and hale. Not being a stupid Immortal, he decides that maybe it would be best to avoid Duncan for the time being, seeing as his mentor has tried to kill him twice in the last few years. In this short piece, Richie finally returns to Paris, meets up with Methos and they proceed to discuss everyone's favorite Highlander. Beren writes a humorous if sexy piece here that is well worth the read. There is some great insight into Richie, Methos and even Duncan. ( snippet )The Fatted Calf can be found here

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair Length: novel length - 48 chapters (can't get an exact word count right now 'cause the comp's being a big pain) Author on LJ: lit_gal Author Website: Worshipping the Geeks Why this must be read: LitGal is one of my fav authors in the fandom, and Control Issues is one of my favs of hers. She's just got such a unique and creative way of writing Sentinel that inserts wonderfully original ideas and twists on existing ones. This fic is an example of that latter by exploring a different dimension of the "Sentinels are known" genre. Usually, the guides are kept in a subordinate position to the Sentinels, sometimes to the extreme of slavery. However, in Control Issues, we get to shake up that trope by having the Guides with the upper hand. Sentinels are considered on the level of children almost, and society feels like the need to be controlled and protected from others and themselves. That alone would make me rec this fic. Yet with LitGal's gorgeous writing style and spot on characterizations, this story just jumps right to the top of the rec list. Blair and Jim feel like the characters from the show yet in a totally different world. On top of all this, LitGal also explores the relationship between a Sentinel and Guide. We get to explore how two independent and strong men walk this relationship road together and also see what makes this bond tick. So go give LitGal a gander and don't forget to drop a note. (Since this reccer is pitifully bad at that!) Control Issues

Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS Pairing: Winters/Nixon Length: 2,016 Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]Author Website: 'fanfiction' tagWhy this must be read:I love the dream-like quality that the author has created for this piece, how Dick is ever slowly falling for Nix but he can't see it for what it really is as its happening. Meredith is subtle in her storytelling, she knows her characters and the way that she brings Winters and Nixon together in this piece is truly breathtaking. He wonders why he remembers this-- something so calm, so trivial. Wonders why, in the chilled, narled claws of a Bastogne foxhole, he looks down at Nixon sleeping slouched against him and thinks about a baby-faced boy kicking his feet, squirming and scribbling mocking rhymes in illicit pen. He brushes a finger against Lewis' cheek, too numb to feel texture; those dark eyes open, recognizing, sleepy and so briefly full of trust, as if the years haven't yet caught up with Nixon's dreaming. Someone says, "Go back to sleep." Someone else presses lips to a chilled forehead, breathing easing back into the peril of dreams. There Must Be a Word

Fandom: Firefly Pairing: Jayne/Inara Length: 3822 Author on LJ: rinalinWhy this must be read: Inara sets out to give her students a lesson and learns something herself as well. Set post-Serenity, Inara is now an instructress at a Companion House and the focus of a lot of rumours from the others at the house. When she has to give a 'live' demonstration, Inara's client turns out to be someone from her past. The author provides us with a a fascinating look at what life and lessons might be like in a 'Verse companion house. Her two characters, Inara and Jayne are wonderfully in character and I love that Inara learns as much as she teaches. The Chosen

Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: Claire Novak/Ben Braeden Author on LJ: rivkat Author Website: RivkaT’s Site Why this must be read: A terrific, heart-clenching future-fic that looks at one of Claire Novak’s possible futures after being Castiel’s vessel and losing her father to the same. But really, just like the show, it’s about children living with the reality their parents bequeathed to them. ( Excerpt )Lekythos
